00:00Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News update for Thursday, February 8. Here are the top
00:06stories at this hour.
00:08Australia will apologise to survivors of institutional child sex abuse by the end of the year, Prime
00:13Minister Malcolm Turnbull said after a five-year inquiry detailed harrowing stories from victims.
00:19A Royal Commission established in 2012 to investigate abuse was contacted by more than
00:2415,000 survivors with claims some decades old involving churches, orphanages, sporting
00:30clubs, youth groups and schools.
00:33More than 100 fighters aligned with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad were killed after
00:38US-led coalition and coalition-backed local forces thwarted a large apparently coordinated
00:43attack late on Wednesday and early on Thursday, a US official said.
00:48The heavy death toll underscored the large size of the attack, which the US official
00:52said included about 500 opposing forces backed by artillery, tanks, multiple launch rocket
00:59systems and mortars.
01:01One of President Donald Trump's White House aides has resigned following allegations of
01:06domestic abuse levelled against him by his two ex-wives. Staff Secretary Rob Porter said
01:12in a written statement that allegations that became public this week are outrageous and
01:17simply false.
01:18Quincy Jones, the legendary music producer behind Michael Jackson, says that the late
01:23king of pop plagiarised some of his hits.
01:26I hate to get into this publicly, but Michael stole a lot of stuff. He stole a lot of songs,"
01:32Jones said in an interview, full of eyebrow-raising comments, published by Vulture, the culture
01:37site of New York magazine.
01:39He specifically cited Billie Jean, a signature song off the Jones-produced thriller, the
01:44top-selling album of all times.
01:47And finally, the weather. Today's high across the UAE will be 24 degrees Celsius, dropping
01:52to 13 degrees at night.
01:53That's all for now. Thanks for watching. A reminder that the next bulletin will be
01:57on Sunday. But as always, you can get the latest news on gulfnews.com
