A shopkeeper thwarted a knife-wielding robber by offering him food instead of cash at a store in Malvern, Worcestershire.
Rakesh Kumar, 47, refused to hand over £100 after the masked man demanded money to feed his children.
Instead, he gave him a loaf of bread, butter, and milk worth £8.89, which the thief took before fleeing.
Mr Kumar later reported the incident to police, who arrested a 22-year-old suspect.
The shopkeeper said he acted out of compassion but realised the need to alert authorities due to the weapon involved.
The suspect has been released on bail.
