00:00Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News update for Wednesday, December 28. Here are the top
00:06stories at this hour.
00:08Residents of Iraq's Daesh-held city of Mosul say an airstrike has disabled the city's
00:13last functioning bridge. Activists from Inside Mosul published pictures last night of the
00:18metal bridge, known as the Old Bridge, showing its twisted girders sinking into the water.
00:24The northern city of Mosul had five bridges spanning the Tigris River, which runs through
00:28the centre of the city.
00:30Carrie Fisher never tired of poking fun at Star Wars, starting with the instantly iconic
00:35buns her character, Princess Leia, wore on the sides of her head. It was just an example
00:41of the often self-directed wit that defined the star, who, at age 60, died on Tuesday
00:46in Los Angeles, four days after suffering a cardiac incident on a flight from London.
00:52Although she achieved global stardom as the trailblazing space heroine, Fisher eventually
00:57became just as famous and beloved for simply being herself, an author, actor and activist.
01:03Meanwhile, Rogue One, a Star Wars story, passed the $300 million mark at the US box office
01:10on Tuesday. It was the second straight weekend of domination in North America for the first
01:15of three one-off anthology stories in Star Wars universe. But celebrations were cancelled
01:21by the devastating news of Fisher's death.
01:24And finally, the weather. Today's high across the UAE will be 27 degrees Celsius, dropping
01:28to 17 degrees at night.
01:30That's all for now. Thanks for watching. As always you can get the latest news on gulfnews.com
