00:00Good day and welcome to the Gulf News Update for Sunday, January the 29th.
00:06Here are the top stories at this hour.
00:09A federal judge in Brooklyn came to the aid of scores of refugees and others who were
00:13trapped at airports across the United States on Saturday after an executive order signed
00:18by President Donald Trump which sought to keep many foreigners from entering the country
00:23led to chaotic scenes across the globe.
00:27The judge's ruling blocked part of the president's actions, preventing the government from deporting
00:32some arrivals who found themselves ensnared by the presidential order.
00:37But it stopped short of letting them into the country or issuing a broader ruling on
00:41the constitutionality of Trump's actions.
00:45Syrian government troops gained control of the main water source for Damascus as the
00:49military worked to secure it and remove landmines in a major development that caps weeks of
00:55fighting with rebels in the area.
00:58The evacuation of fighters to northern Syria was delayed for one day because of rainstorms
01:03and freezing temperatures.
01:06Serena Williams, who now has 23 Grand Slam singles titles with the Australian Open title,
01:12says her rise to become perhaps the greatest player of all time is all down to mental strength
01:18and never giving up, a trait learned from Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova.
01:24The American now holds more Grand Slam titles in the Open era than anyone else after surpassing
01:30Graf's 22 on Saturday.
01:33British music icon Rod Stewart is all set to make his Abu Dhabi debut on March 2 at
01:39the Do Arena on Yass Island.
01:41The Hits Tour 2017 will see the 72-year-old bring all of his biggest hits from the 1970s
01:49to now.
