00:00Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News Update for Monday, August the 29th. Here are the
00:07top stories at this hour.
00:09A suicide car bomb attack on an army training camp in Yemen's second city of Aden killed
00:14at least 60 people on Monday. The attacker drove his vehicle into a gathering of new
00:19army recruits at the camp in northern Aden. The port city, the temporary base of Yemen's
00:24internationally recognized government, has seen a wave of bombings and shootings, targeting
00:29officials and security forces. Attacks in Aden are often claimed by al-Qaeda or Daesh
00:34militants, which have both taken advantage of the chaos in Yemen to make gains in southern
00:39and southeastern regions.
00:42A historic midnight ceasefire has ended a 52-year-old war between the Colombian state
00:47and revolutionary armed forces of Colombia rebels. Hundreds of thousands of Colombians
00:53have died since 1964 as rebel armies and gangs battled in the jungles in what is considered
00:58Latin America's last major civil armed conflict. FARC rebels on Sunday issued the order for
01:04its fighters to observe the ceasefire for midnight.
01:08Unconfirmed reports of gunfire at Los Angeles International Airport this morning caused
01:12panic across the airport. Images on social media showed dozens of passengers fleeing
01:17in panic and the police racing to respond. The Los Angeles Police Department later tweeted
01:22that the reports had been caused by loud noises only.
01:26Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal get their U.S. Open campaigns underway today alongside
01:31rock music legend Phil Collins. Defending champion Djokovic and fellow two-time winner
01:37Nadal come into the season's final Grand Slam with injury concerns. The injury concerns,
01:43combined with an absence of five-time winner Roger Federer, have put 2012 champion Andy
01:48Murray in the position of a favorite. Sam Alderice marked his first squad announcement
01:53as England manager on Sunday by including uncapped West Ham United midfielder Michael
01:59Antonio in a 23-man party for next week's World Cup qualifier in Slovakia. Jamie Vardy,
02:06a key figure in Leicester City's stunning Premier League title success last season,
02:11has also been included. Beyoncé owned the MTV Video Music Awards by winning Video of
02:16the Year and giving a 16-minute performance featuring her recent hits from Lemonade. She
02:21won the top prize for Formation, Besting Adele, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, and Drake.
