00:00Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News Update for Tuesday, October 27. Here are the top
00:11stories at this hour.
00:14Rescuers were today picking their way through rugged terrain in the search for survivors
00:18after a massive earthquake hit Pakistan and Afghanistan, killing more than 300 people.
00:24The toll was expected to rise as search teams reached remote areas that were cut off by
00:29the 7.5 magnitude quake, which triggered landslides and stampedes as it toppled buildings
00:35and severe communication lines.
00:38Gulf News got to take the first look into Apple's first store in the region at the
00:42Mall of the Emirates in Dubai today. The two UAE stores, including the one in Abu Dhabi's
00:48Yas Mall, will officially open for business on Thursday, October 29.
00:53But Gulf News got a chance to check out the line of iMacs and Apple Watches at the Dubai
00:57store, which also includes a giant video wall next to a relaxing area with tables
01:02and trees.
01:03Daesh has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that killed three people last night
01:09in the southern Saudi city of Najran. The attack occurred just after early evening prayers
01:15at Al-Mashad Mosque in the Daza neighbourhood, the Saudi Interior Ministry said.
01:20Global warming could create peaks of humid heat in the Gulf beyond human tolerance by
01:25the century's end, according to a study in the journal Nature Climate Change. If greenhouse
01:30gas emissions continue unabated, heat waves occurring on an average once every 10 to 20
01:35years would by 2100 exceed the capacity of a young healthy person to maintain a normal
01:41body temperature, the study found.
01:44In sport, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, president of the Asian Football Confederation
01:50and Prince Ali bin Al Hussein of Jordan are the two candidates from the region among the
01:55eight who have filed their nomination for the FIFA presidency. The elections for the
01:59top football post will be held on February 26. The other candidates include Michel Platini,
02:05Jerome Champagne and Gianni Infantino.
02:10Filming has begun for Brad Pitt's upcoming satirical comedy War Machine in Abu Dhabi,
02:15tabloid can confirm. The actor is in town and has already begun work on the film, directed
02:21by David Michaud, according to a source. A Twitter user told tabloid she saw Pitt leaving
02:27the set on Sunday evening in a white SUV.
02:31And finally, the weather. Today's high across the UAE will be 36 degrees Celsius, dropping
02:36to 29 degrees at night.
