00:00International dance show Blaze heats up Dubai from August 20 to 22 as part of the Dubai
00:22Summer Surprises.
00:24Blaze is a high-energy street and breakdance stage show at Centrepointe Theatre at Duktuk
00:29Mall of the Emirates.
00:30The 80-minute show is interactive and combines nightclub vibes with West End production values.
00:36Directed by Anthony Van Last, known for big titles such as Mamma Mia!, Sister Act, and
00:40Batman Live, the breaking, topping, popping, locking, and hip-hop show is choreographed
00:46by the likes of Mike Song, Kenny Roldemald, Lyle Beniga, Ryan Chappell, Chris Baldock,
00:52and Kendra Horsbrough.
00:53Dancers in the show have performed with a variety of artists including Michael Jackson,
00:57Madonna, and Sean Paul.
01:10The show was conceptualized by Anthony Van Last, our show director.
01:14He saw the potential of street dance, this new type of dance that happens and develops
01:20on the streets.
01:21He saw the possibilities to make a big theatrical show out of it.
01:24The show goes far beyond the mainstream idea of hip-hop, as it combines several sub-genres
01:29into one cohesive, stylistically diverse piece.
01:32To bring the dance from the street to the stage has been a big, big challenge, because
01:37usually this type of street dance, it's competition style, they're improvising, they're different
01:44moves to each other and they're competing with each other.
01:47It's also choreography, but to make one big show of 90 minutes out of it has been quite
01:53difficult.
01:54What we succeeded in, I think, is that we took all the West End production values, big
02:00set, enormous projections, but we put in the energy of a pop concert and the feel of a
02:06club night.
02:07The theatre turns into one big party.
02:13Blaze originated with 15 members, comprising one emcee, three breakers, and 11 dancers.
02:19Now it has a pool of about 30 dancers from around the world.
02:22Although the show doesn't follow a specific narrative, each member has a strong identity
02:27to embody.
02:28Irish Eden Beleza for tabloid.
