00:00Jack, you are coming from a wine cellar, it looks like.
00:03Yes.
00:05Trying to find some very different, eccentric little
00:09interview space, OK?
00:10Hey, we're keeping it fun.
00:11We're keeping it interesting, just as When Calls the Heart
00:15is doing it with season 12.
00:17I cannot believe it.
00:18I've been watching this since season one.
00:20It's funny, because my parents were so obsessed with it,
00:22and then I got into it.
00:24And so I mean, I can't believe it's been 12 seasons.
00:28What are you feeling 12 seasons in?
00:31I think all of the actors, the whole cast, feels that way.
00:34It's sort of like we look at it like high school right now.
00:38You've gone through grade school and now into high school,
00:41and we just kind of meet up in the summer
00:43and work into the fall.
00:46I think the coolest part of the show, one,
00:48is the fan base, the hashtag hearties, which
00:51are amazing people and an incredibly loyal audience.
00:56And secondly, I've been a part of some pretty amazing shows,
01:00and the cast gets along so well.
01:04I mean, we actually laugh a lot.
01:06We work hard together.
01:07We see each other outside the show,
01:10and that's pretty rare for 12 seasons.
01:12No, is it kind of like summer camp?
01:14You go, and you're just having fun in Canada.
01:19Yeah, well, OK, yeah, that's exactly what it's like.
01:23I love that.
01:23I love it.
01:25We'll go with that.
01:25OK, well, we're a couple episodes
01:27in already to season 12.
01:28But for the people that have not watched, what can they expect?
01:32Why do they need to tune in to season 12?
01:36Well, first of all, season 12 consolidates and cements
01:40the relationship with Elizabeth and Nathan.
01:43Last year, it was a cliffhanger.
01:45This year, they wind up in the first scene kissing.
01:50And it happens to be in front of me
01:51when Mountie Jack is awarded his Medal of Honor, which
01:55he passed in season five.
01:58It was heartbreaking for our audience.
02:00But all of a sudden, Nathan and Elizabeth
02:03kiss in front of Bill.
02:04And it's like, what's happening?
02:07And my line was, are you guys a thing now?
02:10And so that was how we ended the cliffhanger last year,
02:15this romantic cliffhanger.
02:17And they are definitely a couple.
02:19And that romantic storyline is really
02:20blossoming this year, putting together blended families,
02:24how they negotiate and navigate all of that,
02:27as well as we have a new guest coming on the show
02:31this weekend.
02:32We're moving the air date to Saturday
02:35because of the Super Bowl.
02:36So it's going to air on the Hallmark Channel Saturday
02:38evening, 10 PM Eastern.
02:40But shall I say it?
02:43You shall.
02:44Well, we have someone leaving a prairie
02:46coming over to our prairie.
02:47Melissa Gilbert is joining When Calls the Heart this week.
02:52And I couldn't be happier about it.
02:53She's fantastic.
02:56So let's talk about it.
02:57I know, let's talk about it.
02:58Because what can you expect?
02:59I feel like we have two TV industry legends, you
03:04and Melissa, teaming up now.
03:06Oh, that's so kind of you.
03:09Yeah, she started on the show.
03:11She's a forensic inspector.
03:12And there's a back story here from the first moment
03:15we see each other.
03:16Nathan and Bill walk into the jailhouse.
03:20We're investigating, Lauren, this gold coin
03:23that we think is from the bank robbery of 1907,
03:26a train robbery.
03:27And there's a forensic inspector who's
03:29going to join us as we walk in.
03:31She turns around to say something to Nathan.
03:33And she sees Bill.
03:35Her name is Georgie.
03:36And it's, I call it, a drop the platter moment.
03:40And so from that moment on, you see that there's a history
03:43here, a back story.
03:44And that's really what we're going to uncover,
03:47along with being investigative partners in this gold coin.
03:51And how was working with Melissa?
03:55I wouldn't say it if it wasn't true.
03:57But it was a delight on several levels.
04:01One, she's wired like I am.
04:03She loves to rehearse.
04:04She loves to go over the dialogue
04:06and look for new things.
04:07So we hit it off like that immediately.
04:09The director, we collaborated on the scenes,
04:12trying to figure out the back story
04:13and what the moments should be and where they should be.
04:17And two, she's really normal.
04:19I love that part of her.
04:22It was very normal being around her.
04:23And I think also rehearsing, when a new cast member comes in
04:27and just rehearsing and collaborating,
04:29I think it helps as actors, when you're new,
04:32to be a part of really quickly.
04:35And on a side note, our saloon, we built a train coach in there.
04:42So that's where some of these scenes take place.
04:44And so we were coming on stage.
04:47And I've never seen this.
04:50The cast, crew, all crew members,
04:55came and gave Melissa an ovation.
04:58And we were just kind of in our corner
05:02together before going on set.
05:04And it was really a special moment.
05:06Yeah.
05:08Our production coordinator was like,
05:10he's been around a long time.
05:11He goes, I can't believe I'm on the set with Melissa
05:14Gilbert and Jack Wagner.
05:16I was like, I really wasn't even thinking about myself at all.
05:19But it was such a flattering thing.
05:21So it was really great to meet her and work with her.
05:24And hopefully, we look forward to good storytelling.
05:27No, like I was saying, it's two legends coming together.
05:31Of course, that standing ovation was probably for you as well.
05:35Would you like to see her become a series regular?
05:40Well, let me just tease you with this.
05:42OK, we've got this really cool episode.
05:44She comes back in episode 10.
05:47And what happens there, I really got to give it to the writers,
05:49is they just put this little sort of how
05:54we wrap the storyline up.
05:56But they give us this really opportunity
06:01for a potential romantic moment.
06:03Now, I'm not going to tell you if it happens.
06:05But the fact that Bill Avery could have a romance, right?
06:10I think the audience might like that.
06:13And I think Melissa would be fantastic for it.
06:15I think it might happen.
06:17I think the audience would love that.
06:19I think the Hardys would love that,
06:20as we were talking about them earlier.
06:22Which, speaking of the Hardys, it is so fun
06:25that you have this fan base that a lot of TV shows, movies
06:31would love to have.
06:33So what does it mean to you as an actor
06:35to have this support system?
06:38It's phenomenal.
06:39It really is.
06:39I think it's a timing thing as well, Lauren.
06:41Because when I was on General Hospital in the 80s,
06:44this audience reminds me of that sort of committed audience.
06:50But then there were only a few stations.
06:52So you watch with your mother or grandmother, the soap operas.
06:57And I think the timing of the show
07:00is really crucial, because anybody now at our fingertips
07:04can watch Blood and Gore, Sex and Violence,
07:08and anywhere you want, right?
07:10It's there.
07:11But where are you going to find really
07:12heartwarming, poignant, comedic, romantic,
07:17family-friendly television?
07:20And that's what we offer.
07:21And I think also that it's a period piece.
07:24This is 100 years ago.
07:25We're in 1921 now.
07:27And I really believe that people fell in love
07:30with Erin Krakow, season one, and have joined her journey
07:35in the taming the West as a school teacher from the city.
07:40And I think that storytelling has held up.
07:42She's a fantastic actress.
07:44And I think the Hardys have just found
07:46a place, a home with this show.
07:49And we couldn't be more grateful.
07:51If you could give me a tease, like I know
07:53you've already teased a lot.
07:54But if you could give me just one word
07:56to tease the upcoming episode, what would it be?
08:05Sexy.
