00:00The Department of Agriculture, or DA, announced on Thursday the authorization of the importation
00:06of 3,000 metric tons of red onions and 1,000 metric tons of white onions.
00:13According to DA Secretary Francisco Cholorell Jr., the said importation of red and white onions
00:20came from the recommendation of the Bureau of Plant Industry, or BPI, and will ensure
00:26that the country has sufficient buffer stocks while waiting for the fresh harvest.
00:32The Agriculture Chief also underscored that the agency will not risk a potential shortage
00:38that the scrupulous traders could exploit to increase prices like in the past.
00:45According to the BPI, these importations are meant to be preemptive measures
00:51for possible supply gaps due to the typhoons and diseases from the previous year.
