An investigation is underway after a man's body was found following a house fire in the Melbourne suburb of St Kilda.

00:00As you can see behind me, a crime scene has been set up here on Chapel Street.
00:07In this brick building at the back there are some units and police say last night a fire
00:12broke out just before 9 o'clock.
00:14Now fire crews are very quick, they arrived on scene and they managed to put the fire
00:18out in just a matter of minutes.
00:20But they found sadly a man inside with critical injuries.
00:23They tried to help him but unfortunately the man died.
00:27Now it's not known what kind of injuries he had and we also don't know what actually
00:32caused the fire but we do know that police are treating this as a suspicious fire and
00:38homicide detectives are now investigating.
00:40All morning we've seen forensics coming through here bringing out evidence and also inspecting
00:45closely the premises to figure out what actually led up to this unfortunate death.
00:50I had a chat with some of the residents in the area, many of them say that there had
00:54been complaints in the past about the people residing there.
00:58It's a bit of a jolt, it's quite scary, especially to think what has gone on there and why hasn't
01:06anything been done about it.
01:07As this investigation continues police are urging anyone in the public to come forward
