Eight thousand candles will blaze through Ripon Cathedral on Saturday for a special service at 5.30pm, on the eve on Candlemas, when the infant Jesus was presented at the temple and recognised by the ancient Simeon as a light to enlighten all people. The theme of many of the arrangements this year is the victory of peace over war and conflict, including the 80th Anniversary of VE Day.
