00:00Proposals to delay a rise in ticket prices on the Tanganyimae Metro have been agreed by North East leaders.
00:05The plan, put forward by North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, will see the annual increase pushed back from April until July.
00:12The Mayor stepped in after passengers faced significant disruption due to the impact of the Gateshead flyover closure.
00:18Speaking at the meeting, Mayor McGuinness explained why the increase could not be delayed any longer.
00:23She said,
00:30We've seen the impact of austerity on a key piece of North East infrastructure.
00:37We know performance will start to turn around.
00:39We're on the way to introducing the new fleet, getting rid of the ancient trains which are older than me and running far beyond their intended lifetime.
00:46From July, the cost of a single journey paper Metro ticket will go up from £2.80 to £3 for one zone, £3.80 to £4 for two zones,
00:56and from £4.50 to £4.70 for three zones.
