00:46These are our headlines.
00:48Welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos.
00:50From the Televisu Studios in Havana, Cuba, we begin right away with the news.
00:54The situation in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is deteriorating.
00:58Recent fighting between the National Army and the Rwandan government-backed M23 rebel
01:02group has left more than a hundred people dead.
01:05With memories of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis still fresh, the authorities in
01:11North Kibu have confirmed that more than a thousand people have been wounded and have
01:17emigrated from this place.
01:18The toll is the result of clashes between the M23 rebels backed by 4,000 Rwandan soldiers
01:24and the Congolese army.
01:25Doctors from the International Committee of the Red Cross have reported grueling days
01:30treating serious injuries and seeing many bodies on the streets of Goma, the capital
01:35of North Kibu.
01:54The Israeli genocidal forces continue their siege of the West Bank, where they killed
02:13a young man in the town of Jenin on Wednesday.
02:16In Gaza, the killing continues with different methods.
02:19The Zionists did not respect the ceasefire in Gaza for a single day.
02:23On Wednesday morning, their boats wounded several fishermen in Hanjouni, south of the
02:27Strip, where they also arrested two of them.
02:30The mayor of Deir el-Stiyah, northwest of Southfleet, Abdul Rashid Zidan, confirmed
02:35that the genocidal troops fired toxic gases at several houses in the area, killing a whole
02:39family, including a baby.
02:41All of them died of suffocation.
02:44On the other hand, the Red Crescent has confirmed the killing of 25-year-old Omar al-Haya.
02:49The young man was attacked by a drone in the city of Jenin.
03:00And the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees accused Israel of trying to sabotage
03:04the recovery and political transition of Gaza.
03:06UNRWA chief Philip Lazarini made the accusation after the Zionist regime ordered to forcibly
03:11close the agency.
03:13Experts say that the government of Benjamin Netanyahu wants to strip the Palestinians
03:17of their refugee status and indict them of their right to self-determination in addition
03:21to erasing their history and identity.
03:24Lazarini argues that curtailing its operations, in addition to undermining the ceasefire and
03:29compromising the international humanitarian response, will sabotage the recovery and political
03:34transition of Gaza.
03:41And the Israeli regime has carried out a new airstrike on Lebanon, violating the ceasefire
03:46agreement and leaving at least 14 people injured.
03:49At least two attacks were recorded in the Nabataea area, with an Israeli drone attacking
03:54a civilian vehicle.
03:55This is the first assault on Nabataea since the ceasefire was implemented on November
04:0027, 2024.
04:02The situation on the southern border has become increasingly tense, with reports that the
04:06Israeli army has targeted civilian convoys and intensified its operations in areas close
04:11to the border.
04:12The international community is watching these developments with concern, as ceasefire violations
04:17threaten to further destabilize the region.
04:19Lebanese authorities have condemned the attacks and demanded an international response to
04:23protect civilians affected by this escalation of violence.
04:32And on Tuesday, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees and the Near East
04:36Commissioner General Philippe Lazarini warned of the consequences of the Israeli ban.
04:42The Zionist regime has said that it will end all ties with UNRWA and any other agency
04:46acting on its behalf in the occupied territories.
04:49In an address to a meeting of the UN Security Council, UNRWA chief warned that this decision
04:55would be a complete disaster.
04:56In his words, the measure, which comes into force on Thursday, will jeopardize the international
05:01humanitarian response.
05:02In addition, it will aggravate the already catastrophic situation of the Palestinians
05:06in Gaza and the West Bank.
05:08The UNRWA chief also stressed that the move would only undermine the ceasefire and blatant
05:12disregard international law.
05:15This legislation defies the resolution of this Council and the General Assembly.
05:25It flouts the ruling of the International Court of Justice.
05:30It disregards that UNRWA is a mechanism established by the General Assembly to provide assistance
05:36to Palestinian refugees, pending a political answer to the question of Palestine.
05:42Implementing the legislation makes a mockery of international law and imposes massive constraints
05:49on UNRWA's operation.
05:52And New Zealand would not allow entry into its territory of Israeli soldiers involved
05:56in the genocide in Gaza.
05:58Since the onset of the Zionist onslaught, New Zealand authorities put in place a screening
06:02process.
06:03The measure specifies the necessary requirements, many of which are related to the traveler's
06:06military service and the length of time they perform it.
06:10The measure has recently gained prominence as the country barred entry to an unspecified
06:14group of Israelis who refused to provide the information.
06:19Palestinian Solidarity Networks conduct major international campaigns to identify Israeli
06:23soldiers, many of whom have publicized their war crimes on social media.

06:59Welcome back.
07:16Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger will no longer be part of the Economic Community of West
07:20African States from Wednesday.
07:22The split leaves the grouping with without 50% of the region.
07:26The three countries have formed the Confederation of Sahel States, a very important milestone
07:31in the region.
07:32Consequences for the Sahel are enormous, particularly in terms of economic impact, but it is also
07:37a reflection of the inability of the states that make up the Economic Community to deal
07:41with the crisis.
07:42The Sahel formally accepted the three countries' request to leave in December of this year.
07:48New alliance that makes up the confederation will maintain relations with ECOWAS states,
07:52but will distance itself from what it sees as behavior that is far removed from Pan-Africanism.
07:57Meanwhile, in India, a deadly stampede at the Mahakumbh Mela festival in Prayagraj has
08:08resulted in at least 15 fatalities and numerous injuries, as millions of Hindu devotees gathered
08:12for a sacred ritual bath.
08:15The chaos erupted early Wednesday morning when crowd control barriers collapsed, causing
08:19a surge of people at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers.
08:23Eyewitnesses described harrowing scenes as individuals were trampled with emergency responders
08:28working tirelessly to carry victims away from the site, which was littered with personal
08:32belongings.
08:33Despite the tragedy, many devotees continued to arrive at the festival, with officials
08:37anticipating record attendance on this auspicious day.
08:40In response to the stampede, police urged pilgrims to avoid the main bathing areas and
08:44implemented enhanced surveillance measures to monitor crowd decency.
08:54According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, over 5,000 migrants have been
08:58arrested.
08:59The agency updated that 969 arrests were added to the 4,981 detentions reported at midday
09:06on Tuesday.
09:07In this way, the control operations ordered by President Donald Trump amounted to 5,950
09:13arrests who have allegedly committed serious crimes.
09:17The federal government has a wide range to define crimes and offenses.
09:20In less than 48 hours, they have gone from murderers and thieves to people who are criminals
09:25just for entering the country illegally, as White House Spokesperson Caroline Levitt ensured.
09:35In the United States, a federal judge holds the President's decision to suspend public
09:39aid and essential assistance programs.
09:41Under executive order by the President of the United States, Donald Trump has been halted
09:45by the courts.
09:46In this case, the White House will not be able to freeze federal aid, as ordered by
09:50the President.
09:51The order, which had unleashed a political storm by posing a risk to the health of millions
09:55of citizens, as well as affecting the energy transition and international aid, was blocked
09:59by a federal judge in Washington.
10:01The decision runs until February 3rd and has received strong support from the Attorneys
10:05General of 23 states, who announced they will challenge the President's action.
10:17In this context, dozens of protesters rallied outside the White House, voicing their opposition
10:21to President Donald Trump's policies.
10:23The demonstration highlighted concerns of the impact of the funding freeze on low-income
10:28citizens, with critics labeling the move as unconstitutional.
10:32As the rally unfolded, demonstrators shouted slogans and expressed their fears about losing
10:36access to vital health care services.
10:39Critics, including Democratic lawmakers, warned that such measures could create chaos in health
10:44care and education systems.
10:51The first nationals deported under the Donald Trump administration arrived in Colombia on
10:55two flights of the Colombian Airspace Force.
10:58Upon their arrival in the country, they reported the mistreatment they were subjected to by
11:02the United States Immigration Authorities.
11:05Edan Tobar with the details.
11:09Luis and his family are part of the 201 Colombians deported by the United States government,
11:15who arrived in the country from El Paso, Texas, and San Diego, California, in the United States.
11:22He tells how after his detention, he was mistreated by the authorities of that country in his
11:26deportation process.
11:31When I arrived in San Diego, they handcuffed my hands and feet.
11:35Even the women who were alone, they handcuffed their hands and feet.
11:38The only ones they didn't handcuff were the ones with their children.
11:42In front of our children, they handcuffed us, and the children were obviously watching.
11:46My daughter asked me, Daddy, why are they handcuffing you?
11:50Are you going to jail?
11:52Obviously confused.
11:53What was I supposed to tell her?
11:58So she was slowly understanding the process, but she couldn't say anything.
12:03In San Diego, they mistreated us a lot.
12:05They treated us practically like animals.
12:08They threw food at us, and we had no access to anything.
12:10They separated us.
12:12They separated my wife and my daughter, and I lasted two days without hearing from them,
12:16until today, when we had the meeting to leave here in the early morning.
12:26Mexican immigration authorities reviewed the disciplinary records of each of the deportees,
12:31and it was found that none of them is associated with or has any pending judicial investigation
12:35in Colombia or the United States, as stated by U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed
12:40that criminals were being deported.
12:46None of them has a pending record with the justice system.
12:49None of them arrived handcuffed, which is important to point out to the country.
13:02We are very happy that they have arrived in our country and, obviously, the president
13:07is giving instructions for the comprehensive care of deportees from all countries.
13:16The Colombian government ratified that deportees must be treated with dignity and that they
13:20are not criminals.
13:22The minister of foreign affairs made an assessment of the deported persons and assured that the
13:26protocols for deportation flights will continue to be enforced, guaranteeing their rights
13:31and respect for their dignity.
13:33The first flight from San Diego, California, brought 62 men, 32 women and 16 children.
13:43In this group were two pregnant women who, according to medical reports, are in good
13:47health.
13:48The second flight from El Paso, Texas, brought 46 men, 45 women and 5 minors.
13:56Consulate officials were attentive to ensure that the situation of our nationals on both
14:00flights was satisfactory, providing them with technical, medical and food assistance.
14:09For these Colombian migrants deported from the U.S., the American dream has come to an
14:15end and they maintain that nothing in life justifies the treatment they were subjected
14:20to.
14:26And Honduras has responded to the White House's orders against migrants.
14:30President Xiomara Castro announced the measures she will take to help her compatriots.
14:35The National Emergency Strategy was announced on national television on Tuesday evening.
14:38The Central American nation will implement action programs for the more than 200,000
14:42Hondurans with deportation orders, as well as people of other nationalities, affirming
14:47that human mobility is a phenomenon exacerbated by the implementation of a liberal economic
14:52system and reaffirming that migration is a human right.
14:56She explained that the plan includes support in areas such as health, social and legal
15:00assistance, the creation of shelters and refuges, as well as family reunification.

18:03Some of which we can disseminate.
18:05Others, for obvious reasons, cannot be disseminated.
18:08And among them, what we are recommending are those good practices that have helped citizens

18:14For example, that they go alone, do not bring children, carry only their identity card,
18:20exercise their right to vote and leave the precincts immediately to avoid crowds.
18:25The electoral authorities also informed that polling companies will be able to disseminate
