Video from social media shows armed men running and M23 rebels riding trucks in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Goma as the sound of heavy gunfire echoes through the streets.

The Rwanda-backed rebels entered Goma on Monday (Jan 27) in a major escalation of a three-decade conflict.

00:34Humanitarian situation in and around Goma remains extremely worrying.

00:43heavy small arms fire and mortar fire across the city and the presence of many dead bodies
00:50in the streets.
00:52We have reports of rapes committed by fighters, looting of property, including of a humanitarian
00:58warehouse and humanitarian and health facilities being hit.
01:02The M23 rebels entered Goma on Monday in a major escalation of a three-decade conflict
01:08rooted in the long fallout from the Rwandan genocide and control of Congo's abundant mineral
01:14resources.
01:15They were continuing to face pockets of resistance from the army and their backers.
01:20Elsewhere, demonstrators attacked embassies in Congo, alleging foreign complicity in Rwandan-backed
01:27rebel advances.
01:28A European diplomat told Reuters that the embassies of France, the United States, Rwanda,
01:34Uganda and Kenya were targeted by the protesters.
