What does Josh McDaniels bring to the Patriots? BC HC Bill O'Brien joins! How will Josh adapt to a mobile QB?
Transcript
00:00Good morning, Bill.
00:02Morning, guys.
00:02How are we doing?
00:03Doing great.
00:04How are you?
00:05Great.
00:06I'm in Jersey, New Jersey, recruiting on the road.
00:11Have you encountered Bill Belichick on the recruiting
00:15trail yet?
00:18I think I'm following him a little bit.
00:20I think he's been in Jersey already.
00:23So no, I haven't actually run into him.
00:25But he's out there, no question.
00:28A lot of competition on the road, a lot of competition
00:31on the road.
00:31If you saw Bill, would it be like that scene in Anchorman
00:34when competing TV stations run into each other?
00:41It would be very cordial, Curtis, very cordial.
00:45Well, I don't know if you were while you were on the road,
00:48so probably not.
00:49But yesterday, Shyam, during his lead,
00:51was very upset about Patriots fans calling them sheep
00:56because they are happy with the hiring of Josh McDaniels.
01:01You had been talking on this show
01:03the week previous about Josh and your respect for him.
01:07And so I'm assuming that you would be polar opposite when
01:13it comes to your opinion, to the opinion of Shyam,
01:16on this hire by Mike Vrabel and by the Patriots.
01:20Yeah, Shyam and I are usually on the same page.
01:23But I would say on this one, we're probably not.
01:26I think that Josh is a proven coordinator in that league.
01:33He's extremely bright.
01:35He's stayed up with the trends in that league.
01:39He knows how to coach young quarterbacks.
01:41He's done it several times.
01:43He's a good developer of quarterbacks.
01:45And he's a good fit for the Patriots.
01:46He has institutional knowledge of the culture of the Patriots.
01:50And those guys are going to be who they are.
01:52Mike's going to be Mike, and Josh is going to be Josh.
01:55But I mean, there's a winning tradition at the Patriots
01:58that I think they'll all work hard to get back to.
02:01And Josh knows how to coach offense.
02:03Bill, you've kind of been down this road before.
02:06How does Josh adapt the offensive scheme?
02:09Because it's kind of the scheme, or at least from where I see it,
02:12what Charlie Weiss started it out.
02:16But it wasn't really about having a mobile quarterback.
02:20Now Josh has a mobile quarterback.
02:22You've kind of used that scheme, and you've
02:25had some mobile quarterbacks.
02:26How do you change and adapt that scheme
02:29to having a guy that you can now add in some design runs with?
02:35Yeah, I think that's the key to being a good coordinator.
02:37I think over the course of time, you always
02:40have to, when you have a great quarterback,
02:43you've got to design everything around what his skill set is.
02:46And Drake can do a lot, right?
02:48He's got a really good arm.
02:51He's very accurate.
02:52He can anticipate, and like you said, he can run.
02:55So I think Josh has done that in the past.
02:59Garoppolo could run.
03:01I mean, even back in 2008, I was the wide receiver coach
03:04when Tom injured his knee.
03:07And Josh was a coordinator, and we had Matt Castle.
03:10And Matt Castle, he could run.
03:12And so we did some things with Matt
03:14to get him outside the pocket and to do
03:16some different things to put pressure on the defense.
03:19So I don't think Josh will have any issue with that.
03:22That's kind of the way the league is right now.
03:24If you look at this final four of teams in the league,
03:27and Jaden Daniels, and Josh Allen,
03:29and obviously Pat Mahomes, and these guys are Jalen Hurts.
03:35These guys are mobile.
03:35And so I think he'll be ready to adapt to what
03:38the offense needs to be.
03:40Bill, what do you say to people, Shyam included,
03:42but he's not the only one, that say that Josh McDaniels is only
03:46known for Tom Brady.
03:47And Tom Brady is the reason that Josh McDaniels gets a nod.
03:50And what else has he done?
03:51Who else has he been able to bring to be a great?
03:56And that the Patriots are just relying on our nostalgia
03:59to get us back on board with Josh McDaniels.
04:03No, I don't agree with that.
04:04I mean, I think if you look at who he's developed over time,
04:08even at the Patriots, when Garoppolo had to play,
04:12Jacoby Brissett had to play, Matt Castle had to play,
04:19over the course of his career, he's
04:22been able to develop all types of quarterbacks.
04:25And I think that he'll do a great job with Drake.
04:28I mean, I know you guys are, it seems
04:30like you're setting up me and Shyam to be arguing.
04:32I mean, Shyam and I are usually on the same page.
04:35I don't really want to, you know, gee, Shyam,
04:37I'm sorry, Shyam, I don't know if you're there today, but.
04:39Yeah, I'm, well, Billy, my issue.
04:41I'm definitely not in agreement on Josh McDaniels.
04:43Well, I guess, Billy, my issue is,
04:45is I've seen you go out and have success and win games
04:49with guys like Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brock Osweiler, TJ Yates,
04:53Tom Savage, like, you name it.
04:54Like, there's a long list of them
04:56that you have won games with that haven't necessarily been,
04:59you know, a top five quarterback in the league.
05:02And then I just look at Josh's resume,
05:04and his doesn't match up nearly as good.
05:07And so for me, it's a massive concern.
05:09He invited you to be a guest at one camp.
05:13He's not hiring you.
05:14I didn't say he was.
05:16Look, I'm not trying to just glaze it, like glaze the guy.
05:18Like, it's just, it's true.
05:19You can stop bee-washing,
05:21you can stop bee-washing Billy from Ann Arbor.
05:24One of my favorite things about Billy O
05:25is that he has won multiple games with TJ Yates,
05:28who I don't know if he started for another team.
05:30Like, that is awesome.
05:32Well, I do appreciate you saying that, Shyam, I really do.
05:35But I will tell you that, you know,
05:38if you look back and you really look at,
05:41let's just look at when Josh was at the Patriots,
05:43you know, when he had Tom,
05:45obviously Tom was the best to ever do it.
05:47But there were several other guys that came in
05:51underneath Tom that you had to get ready to play
05:54that were obviously completely different than Tom.
05:57And when those guys had to play
05:59over the course of the history of the Patriots offense,
06:02those guys were very successful.
06:03I mean, go back to Matt.
06:05Matt was, we were 11-5 with Matt.
06:07I think we were one of the few 11-5 teams
06:09to not make the playoffs.
06:10You go back to Jimmy Garoppolo.
06:12Jimmy Garoppolo, before he got hurt,
06:13I think they were 3-0, 4-0 with Jimmy
06:16when Tom was suspended.
06:18You know, Jacoby Percet, he did a good job.
06:21He beat up, Jacoby was the quarterback.
06:23We came up here on a Thursday night
06:24when I was with the Texans and, you know,
06:26they ran speed option and they did some different things
06:28with Jacoby.
06:29So, you know, I think give it time
06:32and you'll be impressed with what Josh can do
06:34with Drake May.
06:35On to the NFL real quick.
06:39You brought up Patrick Mahomes.
06:41I, you know, I'm sure you hear this.
06:43I'm interested if you see it.
06:45Do you feel like the Chiefs are getting calls
06:49that they should not be getting?
06:51You probably live that with the Patriots,
06:53the argument on the other side of things.
06:56I mean, I just think that the rules
07:01surrounding the quarterback nowadays,
07:04you know, they, it really coincides
07:08with the quarterbacks being able to get away
07:11with doing certain things,
07:12especially the best one in the league.
07:14And the best quarterback in the league right now
07:17until he's knocked off that throne
07:19of Super Bowl champion is Pat Mahomes.
07:22And so like when, you know,
07:23when you become anywhere near his head on a late rush
07:26or you try to, you know, hit him
07:28when he's going out of bounds,
07:30you know, Pat's a smart player.
07:31He's going to take advantage of that
07:32because those are the rules.
07:33And I think that's where they have to go back.
07:35Like the slide rule, Greg, is ridiculous.
07:38It's even trickled down to college.
07:40It happened in our Nebraska game.
07:41Like, you know, if these guys are runners,
07:43once they break the pocket, they're runners.
07:45And so if they don't slide early enough
07:47and declare themselves down,
07:49then you should be able to hit them.
07:51But until that rule's changed, you know,
07:53they're going to, the great ones
07:55are going to take advantage of that stuff.
07:56Yeah, it's wild.
07:57I mean, they did some math yesterday.
07:59I saw circulating.
08:00I'm a big Reddit guy.
08:02Not really, but Mahomes has 36 roughing the passer calls
08:07in the last seven seasons of his career.
08:09Brady had 31 and 23 in the playoffs in 19 playoff games.
08:14Mahomes has eight roughing the passer calls.
08:17Tom Brady has four in his career.
08:21That's incredible.
08:22I mean, I don't, you know, again,
08:24I think like, look, the prize commodity
08:27in the National Football League is the quarterback, right?
08:30I mean, it's a quarterback driven league.
08:31If you don't have a quarterback,
08:32you really have no shot to win games.
08:35So in the end, people are clicking on their TVs
08:39and they're wanting to watch these quarterbacks.
08:41They don't want them hurt.
08:41They don't want them on the sidelines.
08:42So I get it.
08:43They're trying to take care of the quarterback
08:45relative to the rules.
08:46But I mean, there is some common sense with these rules too.
08:49These guys are football players.
08:51And, you know, if you look at, for example,
08:54Josh Allen, who I think is great.
08:56I mean, I think the guy's unbelievable,
08:57but look at what they do with him.
08:58They run him on power plays.
09:00They run him on, you know, outside zone plays.
09:03I mean, he's like 250 pounds come rolling down the tracks.
09:06It's hard to stop him.
09:07But when he's a scrambler,
09:09he can slide late and he can't hit him.
09:10It's kind of a weird thing for the defense to get used to.
09:13If the Chiefs are able to get the three-peat,
09:17does Mahomes have a case for Goatness?
09:23No, not yet.
09:24No.
09:25I mean, Goatness, I mean, if you think about what Tom did,
09:28I mean, it was incredible.
09:30I mean, how many AFC championship games he went to,
09:34how many Super Bowls he was in,
09:36then how many Super Bowls he won.
09:39Mahomes is great.
09:39I spent a lot of time with Mahomes before he was drafted.
09:42I have great respect for Pat.
09:44He's awesome.
09:46But now to get to the top of the mountain,
09:48he's got a little ways to go.
09:50Last one from me, Bill.
09:53The ratings for the national title game
09:55were the lowest ever.
09:58What do you think that is?
10:02I didn't know that.
10:03I don't know.
10:04I can't answer that one.
10:05I thought, look, you know, in the beginning
10:08when Notre Dame opened the game,
10:10I was like, man, 18 play drive.
10:12I said Notre Dame, but then, you know,
10:13obviously Ohio State went on that run
10:15and Notre Dame came back.
10:16It was a hell of a game.
10:17I mean, I don't know.
10:20It seems to me that, you know,
10:22maybe the playoff format has to be looked at a little bit,
10:25whatever it is.
10:26I do think college football,
10:27the enthusiasm for college football is high right now.
10:30I believe that, but I didn't know that.
10:33So that question, that's a hard one for me to answer.
10:36I watched it, thought it was a hell of a game.
10:39Bill, a selfish question for me,
10:40but with you on the road talking to all these recruits,
10:43what is the feedback about BC and kids wanting to go there?
10:47Wiggy and I were talking about having Notre Dame
10:49in the national championship.
10:50Obviously, academic-wise,
10:53BC and Notre Dame are on the same playing field.
10:55So are guys looking at BC in a different light
10:58with you as the guy in charge?
11:00Absolutely.
11:01I think that when you look at where we're at right now
11:06and we go out, like we just hit every Catholic school
11:08in the last three days in New Jersey
11:11and everywhere we go, the top recruits,
11:13I can't really mention names
11:14because I get in trouble with that, even though,
11:16I mean, I don't even understand where the NCAA is
11:19and anything, but if I mention a kid's name,
11:21I get fined or something like that.
11:23I don't know.
11:25So wherever school we go to,
11:27the top prospect in each school
11:28that we've been to the last two or three days,
11:30including today, they're coming up to visit us.
11:34Courtney, they've already been to visit us.
11:38They've been to games.
11:40We signed 27 kids in the class of 25.
11:42We've got, I think, 10 portal guys,
11:45including two transfers from Alabama incoming.
11:49We flipped the roster
11:50and we feel really good about where we're headed.
11:52I think that Boston College is a place that,
11:56as you know, you can come there
11:58and you can have the opportunity
12:01to get a great football development program,
12:05get you ready to play in the NFL,
12:06get one of the best degrees in the country
12:08and Boston College teaches you how important it is
12:11to give back to the community.
12:12So I think we're in a good spot.
12:14We gotta go do it though.
12:16I lied about the last one.
12:17Your old boss, Nick Saban, said this week
12:21that he believes that when it comes to NIL,
12:24there essentially needs to be a salary cap
12:29to keep everything equal.
12:31Which, would you agree with that?
12:33Yeah, I mean, I think that,
12:35I think there has to be, in some way, shape or form,
12:41in conjunction with federal government, with the Congress,
12:45there has to be some type
12:47of college football commission created,
12:49with a commissioner, with a cabinet
12:52underneath that commissioner that regulates college,
12:57that regulates college football.
13:00I mean, there's certain, like the other day,
13:02I'll give you an example.
13:03I was at a kid's basketball game.
13:05And after the game, they were like,
13:06hey, we wanna take a picture with the team.
13:08So I jumped in to take a picture of the team.
13:10Oh, wait a minute, there's a couple of kids
13:12that are freshmen and sophomores.
13:14They can't be in this picture.
13:15It's an NCAA violation.
13:17I mean, wait a second, we're paying kids.
13:19Like, what do you mean it's an NCAA violation
13:22for this nice kid to be in this picture?
13:23Like, what are we, out of our minds?
13:26It doesn't even make sense.
13:27So this has to be regulated,
13:29and there has to be a commission,
13:31and hopefully that'll happen at some point.
13:33It's not really in the near future,
13:35but I keep pushing that.
13:36I think other coaches are pushing that.
13:38I think that's the way it should go.
13:40Bill O'Brien, as always, a pleasure.
13:42Thank you, and we'll talk to you again next week.
13:45Thank you guys, appreciate it.
13:46All right, there he is, Bill O'Brien.
