00:00Bill, we we pride ourselves on being a finely tuned outfit over here and so my
00:09sincere apologies on being late this morning. Unacceptable. Unacceptable.
00:15No problem. No problem at all. I'm just sitting here watching some film and drinking my
00:20Dunkin Donuts coffee so absolutely no problem.
00:23What time do you, like normally during the season, what time are you up?
00:30I usually get up between 5 and 5.30 and try to get in. You know we practice in
00:35the morning so we meet and practice in the morning so I try to get in there
00:38pretty early to get ready to go. When working for Bill did you ever beat him
00:44in or is it accurate that he would sleep at the facility? Yeah I would say I never
00:51beat him in and I would say even a better question is Dante Scarnecchio was
00:56the earliest we would you know so at the Patriots you know you had to get in
01:01there early because we had a lot going on in the morning so you know if you got
01:05in there at 4.30 you'd put your hand on Dante's hood of his car and it'd be
01:09freezing cold so he had been there for probably all night. Yeah. So Dante's a legend.
01:16I think the policy over there now is you can sleep in. It doesn't really...
01:20Remote meeting.
01:22You can work remote if you want.
01:24Do we underrate how much of an impact guys like we obviously know Bill's gone and that is a major story and should be but how much does the loss of Dante Scarnecchio mean?
01:36Like I mean all the issues we see with this offensive line I mean how much of
01:40that was Dante's ability for so long to coach guys up?
01:45Well I would say that Curtis like when I you know when I was there my first stint
01:51there you know that was one of the best coaching staffs I've ever worked on you
01:56know we had Dante, we had Josh, Ivan Fierce was an amazing coach, we had
02:02Chad O'Shea, Nick Casario did a lot of coaching back then but Dante, Dante when
02:08I first got there you know he he taught me a lot like I had to draw his blocking
02:13sheets, I had to my first spring there I had to you know I sat in the back of
02:18the O-line meeting rooms and you know listen to him teach the run game and the
02:22protections and I owe Dante Scarnecchio a lot. He was instrumental in my career and
02:29teaching me a lot about O-line play.
02:32Bill as long as we're talking about the NFL before we talk about BC in college how does the NFL fix the...
02:39Tom Brady weighed in on it this week we talked about it a lot how do they fix
02:43the quarterback slide situation based on what happened with Trevor Lawrence?
02:47Yeah I think that so I don't want to be too long-winded here but when I was in
02:52the NFL I was very fortunate to work on what they called the Madden subcommittee
02:57which was like a committee of head coaches that you know recommended rule
03:02changes you know up the up the scale to the to the the guys who are really in
03:09charge of the league and so I think like one thing that we found was I just think
03:14Greg that more coaches need to be involved in the rule changes and the
03:18rules because like John Madden used to tell us like back in the day the guys
03:24that were in charge of the rules were like Vince Lombardi and and Don Shula and
03:28Chuck Knoll like those guys made the rules of the game because they were in
03:32the game they they they spoke to the players there so now you look at it now
03:36and look the the quarterbacks have to be protected they're the highest paid guys
03:41they're they're the people they're the reason why people watch the game I get
03:44it but like there is a point that Tom's making that you know the slide is a very
03:50very judgmental deal and this guy's coming in to make a you know make a
03:54tackle he's going full speed he's not really sure if the guy's gonna slide or
03:59not because you know like you watch Drake May he doesn't slide he's a tough
04:02guy he doesn't slide all the time so like you know it's very hard to make
04:06those split-second decisions when you're you know you're running a 4-3-40 to try
04:10to to try to you know tackle a guy so you know I think Tom's got a point there
04:15yeah Bill when you start to look at just kind of where you ended as a team and you
04:21you get ready for as you know to watch the SEC championship game this weekend
04:27SMU you played them pretty tough does that is that like something you look at
04:31you go okay we can play with these teams and obviously have an opportunity to
04:37compete for an ACC championship because of you know what we were able to do
04:43against the team that is going to be playing in the and is going to be a
04:46favorite in the ACC champ championship game I believe so wig I think like you
04:52know every year is different right so once the bowl games over we have to you
04:56know doing like what we call an after-action review on everything that
05:00we're doing here soup to nuts but like we've got a you know understand that
05:03like in a lot of these games you know close doesn't count like I get it but we
05:08we are we are very close like we went to SMU you know we played a good football
05:13game we turn the ball over too much give up some big plays and you know
05:17obviously they won the game but you know they're 11 and 1 and they're probably
05:20they should be in the playoff you know you look at Syracuse beating Miami you
05:25know last week you know we beat Syracuse here at Boston College I mean you know
05:28so we feel like we're on the right track but every year is different you know I
05:32mean so we've got a regroup and get ready for next year once the bowl games
05:36over but I do feel like we're on the right track I have a feeling about that
05:39I want to see if you side with Wiggy or Curtis on this debate which has been
05:43ongoing all week on the show where do you stand on planting the flag I mean
05:51you know I don't Greg I just think that these rivalry I just want to be like
05:57honest as I can about this you know these rivalry games look rivalries are
06:02awesome right awesome I was in the Georgia Georgia Tech rivalry I coached
06:06in the Alabama Auburn rivalry they're they're incredible but they're like now
06:10they're like way over exaggerated I mean it's incredible I mean you played 12
06:16games when I was at Ohio State for that month I was like Ryan we have 11 games
06:21other than this game like we've got other important games we've got to go to
06:25Oregon we've got to go to Penn State and play these games and I I think it's look
06:30I like I said it's a hard thing so the flip the flag planning I mean okay it's
06:35whatever it is but like what does that mean you won the game shake the guy's
06:40hand walk off the field get on your bus and head back to your school I mean
06:43great for you and here we go I just don't I'm not into all that flag plan
06:47and I think that's like a bunch of BS I think it's stupid stupid you like you
06:55said you won the game shake the guy's hand if you don't want to shake hands
06:59because they were talking trash so be it I think it's just if it's stupid then
07:04why would you fight over it leads to because it leads to fight stupid part is
07:08the punching right the stupid part is the reality to a flag let me just say
07:12this real quick I think like for Wiggy and I like professional football you
07:17know when the game's over you know you guys see it right the coaches shake
07:20hands everybody goes over and shit you know there's a respect right it's a it's
07:24a very violent sport you know you're putting a lot on the line and you're
07:27playing that game and so like that's really what it is there's a I noticed
07:32that right away when I went to professional football that like there
07:34was no there's emotion like don't get me wrong but like you know at the end hey
07:39shake hands boom great job see you next time we play it that's really to me what
07:43it should be about but that's just me well Bill congratulations are in order
07:47too because you get the ACC Defensive Player of the Year on your team with
07:52Donovan I feel like BC gets disrespected a lot in college football especially
07:57within the ACC I watched the video of his mom telling him that he won ACC
08:02play a Defensive Player of the Year and he said that it was on his goal board
08:07after this his sophomore year season so how much have you seen him grow as a
08:11player but also how proud are you to have a player on your team get that type
08:17of accolade within the conference yeah it's awesome I mean he struggled last
08:23year right he's a he's a great player and he was one of the first guys I met
08:28with when I got the job and I'm very proud of Donovan he's a captain he came
08:34in and worked very hard he never he never wavered you know he's played for a
08:38couple head coaches here he came in he bought into what we were talking about
08:42he loved the the defense that Tim Lewis brought and he went and played I mean
08:46this guy you know Courtney like I've only coached two defensive players of
08:50the year in my time JJ Watt in the NFL and now Donovan here in the ACC and you
08:56know those guys dominate games they take over games you know and that's what
09:00he did in many of these games I mean he literally won us two or three of the
09:05games that we want you know with the way that he rushed the passer in critical
09:08moments or even chase the rundown cause turnovers the guy took over games and so
09:13you know I think he's a great testament to what BC is all about he's a great
09:18student he's an awesome guy on campus a lot of people have everybody has great
09:23respect for him so I'm happy for him self-proclaimed draft nerd Shime has
09:27some sort of a follow-up on this go ahead yeah Bill cuz like as you know the
09:31crappy teams in the NFL get closer to the end of the season we start looking
09:35ahead to the draft and one of the guys who I'm hearing a ton about is in fact
09:38Donovan Esaraku and I'm curious what your response would be to the nerds like
09:43myself who who will look at him especially come combine time and be like
09:47well he doesn't really meet those normal height weight parameters like kind of
09:50how is he going to overcome that in the NFL? Shime's a big height weight guy yeah big time
09:54height weight speed that's my thing yeah I mean Shime you know there's there's
10:00some you know you have a point in some ways but I think it depends on you know
10:04the defense that that the team is playing that you know that's drafting
10:08Donovan I think he's a four down defensive end that can rush off the edge
10:12of the the defense he's got he might not be the tallest guy but he's he's got
10:18great length you know like he his arm length is excellent and he's got
10:22excellent explosion and acceleration to the quarterback he also is very strong
10:27you know he squats a ton he can set the edge of the defense you know he's not a
10:323-4 outside linebacker like what we're used to here in New England right like
10:37Mike Vrabel Willie McGinnis like that's not what Donovan is he's a four down
10:41defensive end that can also play at the second level he's a versatile player he
10:46ran our punt protection with Joe Marinaro so be a special teams guy you
10:50know I think the guy drafted by the right team you know we'll have a very
10:55very successful career he's also very smart a very good teammate and cares
11:00about the team so I if you're a four down team you'd be crazy not to draft
11:05Donovan Ezra I don't think have I asked you for anything I mean short of maybe
11:10some merch or something I don't think I've asked you for any favors no no sir
11:15you have not asked me for any favors no could we have one chime chime chime just
11:21reminded me can chime design one play for next oh god we gotta win what just
11:26one play bill yeah absolutely I mean as long as it's like a legit play with 11
11:32guys on the field and not like some triple flea flicker like you know no
11:37okay would it be an offensive or defensive chime chime an offensive yeah
11:45well okay we'll introduce it in the spring game and then we'll pick some
11:49other you know sort of you know less meaningless game and right it makes it
11:54and we'll throw it in all right and we'll call it like the chime or whatever
12:01like you know we'll have some sort of a gadget name does he have the play in
12:07mind do you know what the play is or are you just gonna design it in the off
12:10season like you already know what the play is no I got I mean I have an idea I
12:15want to cook something up for you I'll make it good don't worry I promise I'll
12:20know I have an idea whatever it is we got we could call it the mash mashed
12:29potato you guys should have you should have Ernie Adams on this show Greg at
12:35some point because he used to have the greatest like trick play suggestions you
12:40know he would call it you know he'd say oh but you should put in the cross
12:43country play this week and so it'd be like some crazy play with all kinds of
12:47motion and unbalanced invariably we would run it but like right yeah that's
12:53you guys should have him on there he's a he could give shine some good advice on
12:56some good gadget place I would love to hear what your what was your answer like
13:00oh yeah that sounds great definitely we'll throw that in there shines the
13:03derivative yeah I mean he's Bill's best friend so we were like sure honey
13:07whatever you need Billy Shimes plays the derivative of the annexation of Puerto
13:12Rico from Little Giants he'll have that ready for you by the way Ty Law told us
13:18he knows what Bill's doing but he won't tell us do you have any it does Bears
13:21whispered to you at all about is it the Jaguars you had any scuttlebutt on Bill's
13:25future you know I asked Bears if he had heard from Bill the other day and you
13:31know just hasn't hasn't heard from him that much so Bill's busy yeah I mean
13:35Bill is a very busy guy so I don't know I really don't I have no idea I would
13:40look the guys you know look guys you know he's 14 wins away I think it is
13:45from Don Schultz record I mean you know I think that's a that's a massive record
13:49in sports and so I would imagine he'd probably want to coach again and you
13:55know whoever gets him you know a refreshed Bill Belichick that that
14:00probably pretty dangerous in the NFL all right Bill
14:03wiggy I wanted to say congrats on big Seymour's kid right I didn't I see he
14:09committed with you guys yeah London Seymour yeah from down in Atlanta
14:15Richard's awesome he was great and London's about six five three oh five
14:20plays defensive line just like his dad did and you know we're excited about him
14:24he'll probably you know be here you know I think he'll officially visit in
14:29December and sign in February didn't Larry Ellison's wife write a check for a
14:34million bucks to make that happen or that just Michigan no you need a Larry
14:40Ellison is what you need bill yeah I don't know who that is but yeah
14:44absolutely maybe Rob Hale plenty of BC guys that have stuff no not to be not no
14:51I mean look at Curtis Curtis bill you might agree with me Curtis is when it
15:00comes to being tough or smart he's a bit of an outlier at Boston College I
15:05don't know if you know that yeah I didn't look look I just got to be I got
15:15to tell you guys I did not say that that's not what I said
15:20you didn't say that about your former quarterback no I said no I did not say
15:25that I support Tommy Castellanos and I did not I said that I said that 99% of
15:33our team is staying with us that's what I said okay and so like that was like
15:38brutal that was brutal that was not what I said but you know it is what it is so
15:42okay but you know I've been doing this a long time I've been misquoted very very
15:46very many times been misquoted a lot so it's my fault all right but you would
15:50agree that Curtis is neither tough nor smart right no I would not agree the BC
15:56guy it's okay I mean the show of a regional doesn't even recognize Greg's
16:00existence all right Bill O'Brien I and I think we're gonna have you on the rest
16:06of the season right rest of NFL season cuz you're absolutely a lot of fun
16:10appreciate it guys there you go that's Bill O'Brien
