00:00Syntax Sabotage Bill. This was proposed by some advocate groups that does not support the passing of a bill to reduce the cost of some cigarette products.
00:12This is what BN Manalo reported.
00:14Some advocacy groups are trying to push House Bill 11279 or the Singson-Meehan Bill.
00:23They are trying to reduce the cost of tobacco and vape because this will increase the revenue of the tobacco industries while lowering the cost of cigarettes in the country.
00:36The group also proposed the Syntax Sabotage Bill as an example because it is possible for the number of Filipino smokers to increase if this law is passed while lowering the revenue of the government.
00:50Its approval will drastically harm public health, it will burden the economy, it will undermine our progress towards a healthier, more resilient nation.
00:58This health sabotage bill threatens about 27 billion pesos in government revenue over the next five years. These funds are essential for universal health care.
01:09According to the study of a group, if the Singson-Meehan Bill is passed in the next five years, more than 600,000 individuals will be exposed to tobacco in the country, most of them are young people.
01:23Half of them are likely to die from tobacco.
01:27According to the group, one Filipino dies every six minutes because of the diseases caused by tobacco.
01:35The government spent more than 400 billion pesos because of these diseases.
01:42In 2023, the number of tobacco-related deaths in the Philippines reached 89,000.
01:49We should not blame the smokers because they are victims. They are victims of nicotine.
01:58It is not a solution to stop the increase of taxes so that illicit trade will disappear.
02:03Because even if you do not increase for many years, like Malaysia did, the percentage of illicit cigarettes will still be high if the enforcement is not good.
02:15Meanwhile, it should be noted that the Department of Finance heard the position of all the groups about the so-called plan.
02:25BN Manalo for Pambansang TV in the new Philippines.
