00:00The National Water Services Commission has urged the government to establish regulations
00:05on water usage limits for industries, including data centers, that are known to use large
00:11amounts of water.
00:12Its chairman, Charles Santiago, said the federal and state governments played an important
00:17role in the sustainable development of data centers, which consume vast amounts of water
00:22and power for their cooling systems.
00:24According to a study by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a data center with a
00:29capacity of 100 megawatts uses about 1.1 million gallons of water per day for cooling, the
00:35equivalent of the daily water usage in a city of 10,000 people.
00:54Santiago said Malaysia had begun developing data centers in the most unsustainable way
01:06and should change its practice to align with the guidelines of the National Energy Transition
01:10Roadmap.
01:11He also recommended using rainwater and reclaimed water to power the cooling systems and urged
01:16local councils to not approve the development order for data centers if the companies failed
01:21to meet the criteria.
01:23Santiago said the environmental and noise impact assessments from the data centers over
01:27a five-year period should be completed for the benefit of residents and businesses in
01:32the area.
