00:00We have with us now in the studio, golfer Rian Maliksy.
00:04Good morning, Rian, and welcome to PTV Sports. How are you this morning?
00:09Good morning. Thank you for inviting me. I'm okay.
00:14First off, can you tell us what was your journey in golf and what inspired you to take up this sport?
00:22So I started when I was 8. My dad used to swing at home and I was just curious.
00:28So they brought me to the range and then I started throwing.
00:32And then I kept going. After a month, I started playing in tournaments.
00:37And then a year after, I went abroad.
00:40So that's where I started.
00:43And I think golf brings out my individual spirit and I really have to be dependent on myself.
00:49So that's why I like golf.
00:52Parter, as you can see here, for some athletes, they are naturally born to be an athlete.
00:58Just like what Rian told us.
01:00The first time he entered the golf course, he already had a natural swing.
01:05Right.
01:06So this is natural to you? You felt right away that this is something that you're going to be good at?
01:13Yes. When I started throwing the ball, we clicked right away.
01:18So I told my dad that I really like this sport.
01:21So this is my career.
01:24It's a good thing that Rian is here because when I tried to swing, the ball was still there.
01:29It's not for everybody, right, partner?
01:31Not for me.
01:32But Rian, when you were a kid, when you started playing golf,
01:37aside from your dad, who were your other influences that really made you fall in love with golf?
01:45Aside from, as you said, your first swing, you already know that you're in love with this sport.
01:51Who were your other influences?
01:53So aside from my dad, because we always watch golf shows or PGA Tour tournaments.
02:02So I always watch Nelly Cordo and Tiger Woods.
02:05And before that, Jason Dayden and Jordan Spieth.
02:08So they were the ones who influenced me in golf.
02:11Who was your idol when it comes to golf?
02:14Tiger Woods.
02:15Tiger Woods. That's what I was thinking earlier. Tiger Woods.
02:20Okay, partner.
02:22You recently joined the competition.
02:26Can you tell us more about the Australian Masters of the Amateurs?
02:31Yes. So two weeks ago, I was in Australia in Melbourne.
02:35So far, I didn't have a caddy that week.
02:37So it was a bit of a struggle since everyone else had a caddy.
02:40But I was very familiar with the course since I played that last year.
02:44So that was my only mindset that I have to deal with myself
02:50and be really comfortable in handling the pressure all by myself.
02:55And then I did struggle with my swing.
02:58So that was really the struggle that week.
03:03But aside from that, despite that it wasn't an A game, I still finished third.
03:10Do you feel like after performing on such a big stage,
03:15is it something that you gained experience and confidence boosters
03:21heading into your next tournaments?
03:23Yes. Well, since I've been playing golf for about 10 years now,
03:26my experience has been accumulating.
03:28And I just used those lessons to my upcoming tournaments
03:32that will somehow help me become a better player.
03:36Earlier, you mentioned about pressure.
03:38You were pressured during the tournament.
03:40But as an athlete, as a golfer, how do you handle pressure during the game?
03:45For me, I like to keep things simple.
03:47So drink lots of water, do a lot of meditation,
03:51and somehow pray right before I start a round.
03:54So I think that really helped me a lot in performing on my tournaments.
03:58You know, partner, one common factor that I see
04:02among the many athletes that we've interviewed,
04:07meditation is one of the routines that they do before any competition,
04:12I guess because it relaxes their mind and keeps them focused on the game.
04:17So it just goes to show, partner, that professional sports,
04:21and even at the amateur level like Rian,
04:24the mental game is really important as much as the physical.
04:30Yeah, that's true.
04:31Now, can you talk us about, walk us through your journey
04:35to your very rare award that you won here at the US Sports Association.
04:44Two major events that you won here.
04:48So yeah, I came from a 2023 slump.
04:50I was always in the medallions.
04:53So I was very frustrated.
04:54And then, ever since the start of 2024,
04:57I've been focusing on training.
05:00I remember before, I always had a nosebleed.
05:03It's a good way to train.
05:05So that's how hard I train.
05:11Ever since playing tournaments,
05:13where I was top 10,
05:14and then when I came back to the Philippines at one point,
05:17before those two events,
05:20my dad told me,
05:21let's just practice,
05:22and then let's just do a wide set,
05:24that you just need to be aggressive in the game.
05:27And then I brought that with me,
05:29in those two tournaments,
05:30and then I won.
05:32Rian, you said you had a nosebleed during practice.
05:35Was it because of the heat?
05:37It was because of the heat and the training.
05:41We can see that our teammates there
05:46don't put golf above the list of physically demanding sports.
05:52But Rian is proving that it's really hard.
05:56There's no such thing as an easy sport.
05:58And of course, I'm sure every day,
06:00you're training under the sun, right?
06:03It's really hard.
06:05And Rian, you also mentioned that in 2023,
06:07it was a slump year for you.
06:09So in 2024, you flipped the switch.
06:12So how exactly did you do that?
06:13What changed for you to turn that situation around?
06:17So we just talked to my dad,
06:19we just switched our mindsets,
06:22I just switched my perception of things.
06:26Because in 2023,
06:28I leaned towards the negative side of my performance.
06:32And then in 2024,
06:34I tried to use those failures as an advantage for me.
06:38Because there are really blessings in disguise.
06:40And those are really the key moments
06:42that I should use to really grow as a player.
06:46You talked about your conversation with your dad
06:51as something that really helped you overcome this slump.
06:57And it seems like your father has a huge influence on you.
07:01He seems to be your mentor and your guide.
07:04Can you just talk about your relationship,
07:07how special it is to you with your father?
07:10For me, both of my parents are really good support system for me in my career.
07:15So not only my dad, but also my mom.
07:17They are really good partners.
07:20And they have really helped me in my career.
07:22So for my mom, she just executes the plan.
07:26The plan my dad makes for me.
07:28And then my dad is just there guiding me in the golf course.
07:32And then I'm just very lucky to have parents like this.
07:35Because not everyone gets to have the support system I have.
07:38Very supportive.
07:40Even if it's an individual sport,
07:42golf is a team effort.
07:45And it's a family team effort.
07:47In Rian's case.
07:49Do they also play golf?
07:51Just my dad.
07:53Mom is in charge of the strategy.
07:55She's with us in the studio.
07:58Mom is the strategic brains behind the team.
08:02Mom reads a lot of golf strategies.
08:08My dad does the planning.
08:10And my mom does the execution of those plans.
08:15Partner, in January 2024,
08:18Rian ranks 60th in Amateur Golf Now.
08:22It's only been a month,
08:24and he's already ranked 3rd.
08:26So can you tell us,
08:28why did he leap from rank 60 to rank 3rd so fast?
08:34In just, what, a year?
08:37So I'll credit that to my dad.
08:39Because as I said, he plans my itinerary.
08:43And I was able to play on a lot of very good events.
08:46That will help me boost up my ranking.
08:49And since I really played well on those events,
08:51that helped me really boost up that quick.
08:57Rian, now let's talk about your future moving forward.
09:01And we know that you received a scholarship
09:03from Duke University,
09:05a very prestigious university in the United States.
09:08And you talked about having visited the school earlier.
09:12So can you just talk to us about your experience
09:15when you visited the campus?
09:17So yes, since 2021, actually,
09:19the head coaches of Duke University
09:21have been watching me since then.
09:23And then I was able to communicate with them
09:26around summer of 2023,
09:28since those are the NCAA rules.
09:31And then I was able to visit that time.
09:33And then I really love the campus.
09:35The coaches are really nice.
09:37And then, thankfully, I know the girls on the team.
09:41So I was really comfortable.
09:43And then I felt right away that
09:45this is the place I want to be.
09:47This is the place where I want to grow,
09:49not only as a person, but as a golfer as well.
09:51Aren't you somehow afraid
09:53that this coming September,
09:55I think, right?
09:57You're going to Duke University
09:59as a scholar in golf.
10:02Do you have some sort of fear
10:05that you'll be independent
10:07going there to study at the same time,
10:10to train in golf?
10:11I think at first, I was really afraid
10:13because I'm alone.
10:15But I think that's really the point
10:17of going to college golf.
10:19Learning to be independent
10:21and really handle things with difficulty
10:24and the pressures handling those,
10:26it takes a lot of responsibility.
10:28But that's the point of college golf,
10:30really to grow not only as a player,
10:32but as a person.
10:34To add to that,
10:36as a student, an athlete student,
10:38how do you balance?
10:40I'm sure many are curious
10:42how do you balance academics and sports?
10:45For me, I'm very lucky
10:47since I've been homeschooled since 7th grade.
10:50I think it would be much harder
10:52for me to balance it out
10:53if I were to go to a conventional school.
10:56So I'm lucky that my parents
11:00allowed me to homeschool,
11:01so I have more time to practice.
11:03And then I could just study
11:05my modules every night.
11:07It's easy to balance it out.
11:10Is this the first time
11:12you've attended a conventional school?
11:17Probably in a while.
11:18It's been 6 years
11:20since I've been in a conventional school.
11:23So it'll be pretty new to me,
11:25but I'll somehow manage.
11:28Yes, of course.
11:30But since you play here
11:33for Duke University
11:35and NCAA tournaments,
11:38do you feel some kind of responsibility
11:41to represent well?
11:43Because you're not the only one
11:45who carries the name of the Philippines.
11:49Is that a factor in your thoughts?
11:54At first, yes.
11:55But since I've been doing this
11:57since I was 11 years old
11:59representing my country,
12:00this is no different.
12:02I'll just be representing the school.
12:05And if it's not an NCAA-sanctioned event,
12:08I'll just be representing my flag.
12:10It is a big deal,
12:12but this is something I really love to do.
12:16I'm very excited about the progress
12:18that will be made here,
12:19especially training abroad.
12:21Because most of our athletes
12:23who trained abroad
12:24have really improved.
12:26From fencing to mathematics
12:28to university.
12:30Right now, she became an Olympian.
12:33And especially her partner,
12:35like what you said earlier,
12:36the one who beat Rian's ranking.
12:38And if she's still going to compete
12:40in the United States,
12:42who knows where her ranking will end up.
12:46Maybe it'll only improve next year.
12:48So Rian, the Philippine Open is coming up
12:51and you'll be competing here,
12:52best of the best,
12:53male and female golfers.
12:55How are you preparing for this?
12:57The Philippine Open starts on Thursday
12:59and it's an Asian tour sanctioned event.
13:01And only the men will be playing that.
13:04I am very grateful
13:05that I'm the only women amateur to be invited.
13:09So, of course, there are a lot of supporters
13:12and there are a lot of people
13:14who will support this as well
13:16because I'm just a girl
13:18playing in a men's field.
13:19So, mixed feelings about that.
13:22But for this week,
13:23I'll be just taking in this experience
13:26and see how I perform
13:28with the male athletes here.
13:30But this is a good training ground.
13:32Yes, partner.
13:33It's like a training ground
13:36where all of her opponents are men.
13:38But how are you preparing for this one?
13:40I mean, especially that
13:41all of your opponents are male golfers.
13:45Except for her.
13:46Except for her.
13:48Entering the lion's den.
13:50Right?
13:51So, yes, well,
13:52I'm just doing the same training
13:53as I did last summer.
13:54I've been working out a lot
13:56and then seeing my coaches time to time.
13:59And then, same routine.
14:02And then, see how I play in those four days.
14:06But let's talk about the upcoming events,
14:09especially international events.
14:13We know that there are Southeast Asian Games
14:15this December 2025 in Thailand.
14:19What are the chances that you'll play
14:21for the Philippine national team?
14:23Probably very high.
14:24But I haven't been contacted yet
14:26by the governing body of the Philippines.
14:29So, a bit of a gray area there as well.
14:33So, I'm not sure yet.
14:34Hopefully, they contact me soon.
14:36Since I'll be going to Dukna this September.
14:39But I think during that time,
14:41since November, December,
14:42we're off-season.
14:43So, I'll be pretty much available.
14:46The gray area that you're talking about, Rian,
14:48is this schedule-wise?
14:51Not really schedule-wise.
14:52But because I haven't been contacted yet
14:54by the governing body.
14:57But, of course, all athletes dream
15:01to make it to the Olympic stage.
15:05What are your chances, in your opinion,
15:07for the LA 2028 Olympics?
15:10So, I'll be gauging my performance first
15:13in the 2025 season.
15:15And see if I have really the capability
15:19to turn pro.
15:21Because I really need a ranking
15:23to make it to the Olympics.
15:26Last time I checked,
15:27I think I was third or fourth in the pro ranks.
15:30Just a slot shy of qualifying for the Olympics.
15:35But we'll see in two years' time.
15:37If I'm really good enough to qualify,
15:41then I'll play.
15:42Oh, that's nice.
15:43Something to look forward to.
15:45But how many international competitions
15:47do you need in order to qualify?
15:49Well, it's not just amateur events.
15:52I really need pro events
15:54that are sanctioned by Rolex.
15:56So, being able to play and perform
16:00in those Rolex-sanctioned events
16:02will help me somehow jump in the rankings
16:04in the pro level.
16:07Maybe at this point,
16:08can we just ask you,
16:09because it's just the beginning of the year,
16:11what is your main goal for this year
16:14in terms of your career?
16:17So, yes, I really want to perform
16:19in my major events.
16:20I did win two major events last summer.
16:22I've been accepted to a couple of
16:25professional events in the States
16:27and I think in a couple of
16:29different countries as well.
16:31So, really big events.
16:33So, hopefully I'll make the cut
16:35and really perform in those major events.
16:40Now, let's talk about your 18th birthday.
16:43I believe you've celebrated it
16:45in a very compassionate way.
16:48Can you tell us more about it?
16:49So, I'm turning 18 on March 10th.
16:52I'll just be flying back from Vietnam
16:55because I'll be playing the Asia Pacific
16:57a week before that.
16:58And then we were planning to celebrate it
17:00not only for myself,
17:01but for the golfing community
17:04in the Philippines.
17:05So, on the 23rd of March,
17:07I'll be hosting a golf tournament
17:10that will help raise funds
17:13for the junior golf
17:14and somehow train them
17:17to really help them become
17:20better golfers.
17:21That's very nice, Rian.
17:23Even Rian herself,
17:24she's a young golfer,
17:25but she's already helping her golfers.
17:28She already has a vision to help others,
17:30especially junior golfers
17:33or aspiring athletes like her.
17:36So, finally, do you have a message
17:38to your supporters
17:40and to our viewers as well?
17:43So, to all my supporters
17:44and to my viewers,
17:45thank you so much for your support.
17:47And for the prayers,
17:49I hope you'll continue to support us.
17:51So, God bless you all.
17:55And maybe, partner,
17:56this is a good opportunity
17:57since Rian hasn't contacted
17:59our golf stakeholders yet.
18:01If you're watching this,
18:03reach out to them
18:04because you don't want to fumble this one.
18:07She's really a promising golfer
18:10here in our country.
18:12Without further ado,
18:13thank you again for your time.
18:15It's such an honor
18:16that you're with us this morning.
