00:01:04you
00:01:27hello everyone and welcome back to Lavelle and the 2025 Skate Canada
00:01:32national skating championships we're here in are the studios in Vancouver I'm
00:01:37along with Christian Moore Towers to carry us through the pairs free program
00:01:42and she's excited about and nervous about this event all day long tell us a
00:01:48little bit about your thoughts about yesterday in the short program what we
00:01:50can expect also coming into the free you know what Ted I think fans of pair
00:01:54skating were really treated to a great short program event yesterday highlighted
00:01:57by three clean short programs by our top three teams led by Deanna Stiletto
00:02:02Dudek and Maxime Deschamps a little bit of a funny December for them max
00:02:06falling ill unable to go to the Grand Prix final and so really wanted a nice
00:02:10restart to competition here and I think they got it they posted a score of 76.31
00:02:16and we know this is just a jump to them to the World Championships and what they
00:02:20hope will be a second World Championship title and the top score in the world in
00:02:24the short right now Ted is 77.79 so they've really put themselves right where
00:02:29they want to be right in that mix we also had second place of Leah Pereira
00:02:33and Trent Michaud maybe the skate of the night for me really fun short program to
00:02:37sing sing sing career-best 70.43 for them and in third place Kellyanne
00:02:43Lorraine and Luca Etie a little bit of a ways back but such a fun performance for
00:02:47them at home 63.10 for them yeah they made it a great improvement since last
00:02:53season of course those top three teams were at the World Championships in
00:02:56Montreal and they're vying for positions not only here but obviously to move on
00:03:01internationally now I have a very important question for you because I
00:03:03always wondered about this you know most skaters at that level in in this
00:03:08competition and many in singles and dance as well represent Canada many
00:03:12times out internationally and that's so exciting and so proud and wonderful
00:03:16feeling but talking about the National Championships after you go around the
00:03:21world many times to compete for Canada what does a national championship mean
00:03:26to these athletes you're right Ted and undoubtedly I think it fills all of
00:03:31these athletes with pride to wear the maple leaf on their back internationally
00:03:34but there is something so special about competing at home and I think you can
00:03:39ask countless athletes and they'll tell you that their favorite event is the
00:03:42Canadian National Figure Skating Championships and I think the reason
00:03:46being it helps us the athletes to remember their why it sounds silly but
00:03:51sometimes skaters can get wrapped up in the day-to-day work and what needs to be
00:03:55done and what needs to get better and what the weaknesses are and I think when
00:03:58you go and you compete at home in front of a Canadian audience especially this
00:04:02fantastic audience in Laval Quebec who have been so supportive of everybody I
00:04:07think it gives you that mental and emotional side of remembering exactly
00:04:11why you do this and that is so important in a world that can be sometimes quite
00:04:16challenging well this is the moment it's the free program and the pairs
00:04:20event here at the National Championships and it starts right now
00:04:46so
00:05:16you

00:09:48I go the hardest. I break the pain.
00:09:53We just gotta go hard. Go hard. Go hard. Go hard.
00:10:09Welcome back, everyone, to the national championship as we see a full audience here for the Pairs Free Program.
00:10:16I'm Ted Barton in our studios in Vancouver alongside Christian Moore Towers from a national champion Olympian.
00:10:22You name it. You are excited and nervous for this event, aren't you?
00:10:26I am nervous. You know, we had such a great event yesterday.
00:10:29And I know that emotions are high and tensions are high.
00:10:31And I just want the best. I want what everyone wants for themselves.
00:10:36That's the smallest sentence you've ever said, I think.
00:10:42For the folks in the audience wearing the skatepark radio, welcome to the broadcast.
00:10:46You're listening to Christian Moore Towers and myself here, Ted Barton in Vancouver.
00:10:49And of course, you do have a French broadcast as well.
00:10:52There's a wonderful French commentary team in Montreal covering this event live.
00:10:57So you can switch your skatepark radio to them as well as we wait for the athletes to come onto the ice.
00:11:02It's great to see young skaters, Christian, in the audience from the clubs.
00:11:06And it's wonderful to see a full packed audience electrifying the athletes and giving them energy.
00:11:12Super. And here we go.
00:11:13That's right.
00:11:14With the first group taking to the ice.
00:11:20And we'll get into a little bit of each team.
00:11:23Our first team skating in the free program, Christina Lyons and Marty Hobbert from Ontario.
00:11:30Jasmine Deroche, Kieran Thrasher, also from Ontario.
00:11:35And Fiona Bommadier and Benjamin Neymar.
00:11:41We can talk a little bit about each one of these teams.
00:11:44You've got the background on them and it's quite interesting.
00:11:47I do. Yeah.
00:11:48And you know what?
00:11:49We had each of these teams had pretty good short programs yesterday,
00:11:52but each with one pretty major error,
00:11:55especially a disappointment from team number three that you see on your screen here.
00:11:59Fiona Bommadier and Benjamin Neymar, they had been training so well
00:12:03and have really been making big waves in their short career together so far.
00:12:07Only started skating together in spring of 2024,
00:12:11but I know that they wanted more for themselves yesterday.
00:12:15And we'll really be looking for a clean skate today.
00:12:18Taking a look here at Jasmine Deroche and Kieran Thrasher.
00:12:23Jasmine and Kieran, a little bit of an interesting story.
00:12:26They are actually a junior team internationally,
00:12:28coming off of a third place finish at the Junior Grand Prix Final just last month.
00:12:33They've decided to skate senior domestically.
00:12:36Coach Bruno Marcotte thinks that it will be great for their development
00:12:39and a good entry into the competition without worrying too much.
00:12:43Looking here at Fiona Bommadier and Benjamin Neymar.
00:12:47I talked about them just a moment ago.
00:12:49I'm really impressed with this team, Ted.
00:12:52Warming up their twist here.
00:12:54Just a double.
00:12:55They'll do a triple in the competition today
00:12:58and had had great success at the Warsaw Cup in December, coming third.
00:13:05Here looking at Christina Lyons, brand new to pair skating.
00:13:11Christina and Marty only in their first season together.
00:13:15Just looking for personal growth here at the national championships.
00:13:19And just a special note for Fiona Bommadier.
00:13:21You'll see her in the yellow dress.
00:13:23Her mom was José Swinar, the former national champion of Canada
00:13:28in the senior women's category and fifth at the World Championships or the Olympics.
00:13:34I'm not sure, but she's represented Canada many times.
00:13:36And here she is seeing her daughter in competition.
00:13:40Of course, her father was...
00:13:45Oh my gosh.
00:13:47I forgot the first name.
00:13:48Jean-Michel.
00:13:48Jean-Michel Bommadier.
00:13:50Exactly.
00:13:51There they are right there.
00:13:52And Fiona actually had some success in senior women as well,
00:13:56coming third in the senior women's category at nationals a couple of years ago
00:14:00before deciding to make the switch to pairs.
00:14:02I have to say she was a fantastic single skater.
00:14:05I really think that pair skating is where she will thrive, though.
00:14:08Such a natural performer and really has taken to the pair elements very quickly.
00:14:15Here's Christina Lyons and Marty Hobrock.
00:14:17Talked a little bit about this being their first event.
00:14:20They don't have a ton of placement or scoring goals here.
00:14:23They really just want to improve on each of their elements.
00:14:26Gain experience.
00:14:28Christina brand new to the pair discipline.
00:14:31Looking there at a throw triple saucow.
00:14:33Coach Allison Perkis says that she took to the throws quite easily.
00:14:37Despirals were the most difficult to learn.
00:14:40That might be a surprise to some of our viewers,
00:14:43but I can relate.
00:14:44The despirals were difficult for me to learn as well.
00:14:48They will skate first today,
00:14:49having come sixth in the short program yesterday,
00:14:52and they'll be looking for a clean skate.
00:14:55We won't see the most difficult technical content from them.
00:14:58They will do one throw double,
00:15:00where we'll see some of the top teams will do two throw triples.
00:15:04But again, this is just where they're at in their stage of development
00:15:07and will be looking to increase the difficulty of their programs
00:15:10as they get more comfortable skating together.
00:15:12Here's their double twist.
00:15:14Generally speaking, how long does it take for a new team coming together
00:15:18to sort of be, you know, they're working hard together.
00:15:21No question, but to become one, to become know where your partner always is.
00:15:24Is it a year? Is it a two years? Is it six months? How long does it take?
00:15:27Oh, gosh, I think it takes at least a couple of seasons, Ted.
00:15:30Not only to learn where your partner is and to be very comfortable,
00:15:33but even more so to be comfortable in a competition setting.
00:15:36And we're really seeing that with the team on your screen.
00:15:38Jasmine and Kieran, we're told,
00:15:41nice single twist. That's just an exercise from them.
00:15:44They will do a triple.
00:15:45We're told that in training, they're very consistent with their throws
00:15:48and with their jumps.
00:15:49And we have seen a number of errors from them in competition.
00:15:53And I think what we're seeing is them learning
00:15:55and just getting used to each other
00:15:56and the adrenaline and nerves that a competition brings.
00:16:00And having such success on the juniors and being out internationally,
00:16:04a lot that puts, I don't want to say, you know, some expectations,
00:16:08you know, some expectations, maybe personal expectations,
00:16:11internal expectations, but it does.
00:16:13And it does impact and takes a while to settle into that.
00:16:16Feel comfortable with, hey, I am pretty good.
00:16:18I just got to keep going here.
00:16:20That's right.
00:16:21Looking here at a triple Saucow,
00:16:23this is the element that Benjamin missed in the short program yesterday.
00:16:25He's going to want to land that today for sure.
00:16:28We know that he was feeling really disappointed in the short program.
00:16:32And I think we see that a lot, Ted.
00:16:35One mistake feels like it can be kind of a make or break
00:16:38to the impact of the career.
00:16:40And something I've noticed with some perspective
00:16:42and some distance between my competitive career
00:16:45is kind of the acknowledgement that these experiences
00:16:49really just help these teams to grow.
00:16:51And I think that team has a very bright future.
00:16:54I know they have a bright future
00:16:56and they really both have all the tools to become fantastic pair skaters.
00:17:01It's just a matter of time.
00:17:03All of these teams.
00:17:04The challenge is you don't know it at the moment.
00:17:06You only know it later as you just articulated.
00:17:08You know it now, but you're not competing now.
00:17:10Of course, of course.
00:17:12Those moments are difficult,
00:17:14but they are the most valuable moments as you're building the career.
00:17:18And I just saw at the bottom right of my screen,
00:17:21Jasmine and Kieran landing a beautiful throw triple Saucow.
00:17:25They will want more of that in their free program today.
00:17:28We saw them miss that yesterday.
00:17:29All teams will do two throws in their free program.
00:17:33They'll do three lifts, one twist, a pair spin,
00:17:36which is different from the change combination spin we saw yesterday,
00:17:40a choreographed sequence and a death spiral.
00:17:43Most difficult element in the free program.
00:17:46What is it?
00:17:46Oh, it depends on the athlete.
00:17:48For me, it's certainly the twist.
00:17:50I think the twist is the most physically taxing for many teams,
00:17:54which is why we will often see it happening first.
00:17:57And that's the element, as you said, you'll see most often first.
00:18:01The twist might be double or triple.
00:18:04But it takes explosive power.
00:18:07It does.
00:18:07And it has the potential to earn these teams a lot of points.
00:18:10Please welcome the first competitor, representing Ontario.
00:18:14Our first team represents Ontario.
00:18:1621-year-old Christina Lyons, 23-year-old Marty Hubbard.
00:18:21They're out of the Richmond Training Centre.
00:18:22Coached by Alison Perkis and Michael Marinaro.
00:18:25You know him, your partner.
00:18:27Jose Echuinard.
00:18:31Choreography by Alison Perkis.
00:18:33And they'll skate the free program to Where Is My Love.
00:18:57Where did you go?
00:18:59Where did you go?
