00:00:00Yes, that's why I'm doing it.
00:00:24I'm gonna have to stop it.
00:01:25Hello, I'm Laurence Darveau and we are already on the penultimate day of the National Skating Championships 2025 Canada.
00:01:35We are in the beautiful province of Quebec and the competition is taking place in Placebelle-de-la-Valle.
00:01:42We are about to start the rhythmic dance with the seniors and I am in the company of Elisabeth Paradis,
00:01:49a member of the 2016 World Team, with her partner François-Xavier Ouellette.
00:01:54Good morning, Elisabeth.
00:01:55Hello, Laurence.
00:01:55How are you?
00:01:56I'm fine.
00:01:57I say good morning, we arrived in the afternoon.
00:02:01So you had the chance to go see the practices a little earlier this morning.
00:02:04What can we expect because we have teams that are going to play a lot?
00:02:08Yes, we can expect a great event, Laurence.
00:02:12I was very, very, very excited about this event.
00:02:15We have new couples in the senior this year.
00:02:17So we have a new couple that formed this year.
00:02:19Two couples coming from the junior and couples coming from the strong junior.
00:02:23So they were in 3rd, 4th position last year.
00:02:26And we also have veterans who have been there for several, several years.
00:02:30We have several couples who will fight for this 3rd place on the podium.
00:02:34We don't expect big surprises for 1st, 2nd place.
00:02:38We know who will be in 1st and 2nd place.
00:02:41Maybe Marjorie and Zachary will have the ambition, will try to dethrone them.
00:02:47Or maybe Piper and Paul, who have been there for several years.
00:02:50But the 3rd place is open.
00:02:52And it's a 3rd place that would allow them to qualify for the World Championships,
00:02:56to have a Canadian podium.
00:02:58And we have 4 couples who have shown themselves internationally this year,
00:03:02either by Grand Prix, or by international competitions.
00:03:05And to have seen the practices this morning, it's going to be on the ice.
00:03:09Really, they are all couples with potential.
00:03:12They are ready.
00:03:14They have confidence in their abilities.
00:03:16And they want to go get that podium, which is a bit open.
00:03:20These are rhythmic programs, fast programs.
00:03:24And I want to say that no one has held back in these programs,
00:03:28in these rhythmic dances.
00:03:30The levels of difficulty are very high.
00:03:33High levels of difficulty.
00:03:35We will dance to music from the 50s, 60s, 70s.
00:03:38So it will really be very rhythmic dance styles.
00:03:43So we can't go to classic, contemporary styles.
00:03:46It really has to be rhythmic.
00:03:48And we really have to have very high technical notes in the short program.
00:03:51You have to look for the levels in the step sequences, in the volts.
00:03:55So couples who know they don't have the right to make mistakes,
00:03:58because it's going to be played, yes, always on the components of the program.
00:04:01But especially, especially today, in the technical notes for this 3rd place.
00:04:07It's an event that makes us dance.
00:04:10We always have a lot of fun watching it.
00:04:13So we go down to the ice to see the first warm-up group take place.
00:05:10The first warm-up group

00:10:05Once again, welcome. I'm Laurence Darvaux.
00:10:08I'm here with Elisabeth Paradis,
00:10:11who will be our analyst for rhythmic dance.
00:10:15At Les Seigneurs, we've just discussed
00:10:19how much we risk dancing on the edge of our chairs
00:10:23with a theme from the 50s, 60s and 70s.
00:10:29But what can we expect in terms of the technical elements
00:10:32for the rhythmic dance at Les Seigneurs?
00:10:35Yes, for the rhythmic dance at Les Seigneurs,
00:10:38we have 2 minutes and 50 seconds, more or less,
00:10:41to do five technical elements.
00:10:43So, three step sequences on five elements.
00:10:47When I said the technique was going to be important,
00:10:50it was a lot in terms of step sequences.
00:10:52So, a step sequence of the type of dance on a track
00:10:55that we're going to see on the screen, identified PST.
00:10:58So, we're going to recognize certain steps
00:11:01of the passo doblé in this element,
00:11:03but unlike the juniors,
00:11:05a few days ago, who were doing complete steps,
00:11:08Les Seigneurs will only do certain steps of the passo doblé
00:11:11on the rhythm of their choice
00:11:14and will fill the rest of the pattern
00:11:17with steps of their choice.
00:11:19The second element we're going to see
00:11:21will be another step sequence,
00:11:23but a choreographic rhythmic sequence.
00:11:25This is a step sequence where we don't have a technical level
00:11:28that will move on the width of the ice,
00:11:31either towards the judges for this element,
00:11:34where we highlight the musical style,
00:11:37we highlight the dance,
00:11:39whether it's disco, punk,
00:11:42whatever the dance style we've chosen,
00:11:45we absolutely have to highlight it in this element.
00:11:48There will also be a short lift,
00:11:50so less than 8 seconds,
00:11:52where we're going to look for a technical level as high as possible.
00:11:55A step sequence,
00:11:57I went over the third step sequence,
00:11:59it's a step sequence without contact.
00:12:01So, we're going to look for a technical level
00:12:03and you're going to see the skaters cross the ice from one end to the other,
00:12:06either in the middle of the ice or on a diagonal.
00:12:09So, the skaters don't touch each other,
00:12:11so it's without grip,
00:12:13and we have to make our turns as clean as possible.
00:12:17And finally,
00:12:19we can't forget the vaults.
00:12:22We often call them the twizzles.
00:12:25So, the sequence where you see the skaters turning like a pirouette,
00:12:29but moving side to side.
00:12:31So, it's the element that sometimes haunts the ice dancers.
00:12:36So, five elements,
00:12:38no room for error in the rhythmic dance,
00:12:40it's the equivalent of the ice dance program.
00:12:42So, we really want to maximize the points from a technical point of view.
00:12:48So, you see on the screen,
00:12:50a couple you see on the screen,
00:12:52Eliane Foroglou, Gadouri and Luke Anderson,
00:12:56a new couple representing Quebec.
00:12:59Here we see the Alberta couple,
00:13:01Aoussa Robinson and Jacob Portes.
00:13:05It's a couple who are used to senior Canadian championships,
00:13:09so they have experience,
00:13:11but have not yet managed to take a place internationally.
00:13:15So, Passage Canada didn't send them internationally this year,
00:13:18but I'm sure it's in their ambition
00:13:21to show Passage Canada that they have a place
00:13:24on the international competitions B,
00:13:26to gradually climb the ranks,
00:13:28to be able to do Grand Prix,
00:13:29to be able to qualify too,
00:13:30and make minimal points
00:13:32for the four continents championships,
00:13:34the world championships.
00:13:35So, they are just at this limit where we want to push,
00:13:38we want to qualify.
00:13:39We're not there yet, but we're getting there.
00:13:41A couple here from the juniors,
00:13:43Alyssa Corneva and Kieran McDonald.
00:13:46They were third last year in the juniors,
00:13:49so bronze medalists.
00:13:50Still very young,
00:13:52very young, very fresh.
00:13:54They have not yet done an international competition this year in the seniors,
00:13:57but they have international experience
00:13:59in the juniors, this couple.
00:14:01So, they come with a baggage,
00:14:02but maybe you will notice a little less confidence,
00:14:05maturity and assurance than the couple, for example,
00:14:08that we see on the screen.
00:14:10They impressed me a lot in practice this morning,
00:14:13Lili Henson and Nathan Lickers.
00:14:16It's the only couple in this warm-up
00:14:18who have done B-type internationals,
00:14:21not Grand Prix,
00:14:22but still internationals this year.
00:14:24And they won the Passage Canada challenges
00:14:28a few weeks ago.
00:14:30Their goal, I'm sure of it,
00:14:32they didn't tell me,
00:14:33but I'm sure of it,
00:14:35is to be in the warm-up,
00:14:36the second warm-up tomorrow.
00:14:38They stood out a lot in practice,
00:14:40so they should have higher program components.
00:14:43And they will try to dethrone one of the five couples
00:14:47of the next warm-up,
00:14:48which is not an easy task, Laurence,
00:14:50because the five couples that are coming,
00:14:51you will talk about it later,
00:14:53they are all veterans of ice dancing in Canada,
00:14:56who have been there for a long time.
00:14:58They are well established internationally
00:15:00and on the national scene.
00:15:02But I know that Lili and Nathan are capable of it,
00:15:06but they will have to perform from a technical point of view
00:15:10if they want to do it.
00:15:13The category is not full,
00:15:15but we realize that our father is in good health.
00:15:17Yes, that's it.
00:15:18Only 10 couples,
00:15:19it's a bit disappointing,
00:15:21but we remember that among the juniors,
00:15:22there were 15 couples
00:15:23and several couples who did not qualify for the challenge.
00:15:26So we have a lot of juniors.
00:15:28There are years like this,
00:15:29years of transition.
00:15:30There are a few couples who were there last year
00:15:32who either stopped skating,
00:15:34or found new partners.
00:15:36We also saw returns to the junior,
00:15:38who were in senior last year
00:15:40and who returned.
00:15:41This is the case of our vice junior Canadian champions,
00:15:43Sandrine and Quentin,
00:15:45who were seniors and who returned.
00:15:48Charlie Anderson.
00:15:49Charlie Anderson, exactly.
00:15:50His former partner Luke Anderson
00:15:52is there with a new partner this year,
00:15:54but Charlie was in the junior.
00:15:56So there are rotations,
00:15:57there are variations,
00:15:58but that does not mean that the sport is not in good health,
00:16:01because they are all excellent couples.
00:16:03I did not talk about Jamie Fournier and Everest Zoo,
00:16:06but they finished at the bottom of the podium
00:16:08at the juniors last year,
00:16:10a fourth position.
00:16:11But it is a couple who arrive at the seniors
00:16:14with great confidence,
00:16:15great confidence,
00:16:16and they also had a very good practice this morning.
00:16:19So I talked about couples
00:16:22who have international experience,
00:16:25but these couples are also there today
00:16:29to show at Skate Canada
00:16:31that they are able to represent us internationally.
00:16:34Going international is important, yes, for the experience.
00:16:38Obviously, we are always happy to go international,
00:16:41but also to get minimum points
00:16:43to be able to qualify for the World Championships
00:16:46or the Four Continents Championships.
00:16:48If we did not go international,
00:16:49we cannot get the minimum points.
00:16:51So even if we had surprise performances here today from skaters,
00:16:54if they do not have the minimum points,
00:16:56we cannot send them.
00:16:59We will, Josée, give the last few words,
00:17:04a few tips to Elianne and Luke before their performance.
00:17:11So we just announced the end of the warm-up period.
00:17:19Elianne and Luke, who are in their first year together,
00:17:22we said it, Elianne was not there last year.
00:17:25It was two years ago,
00:17:27her last Canadian Junior Championships.
00:17:29So it's a return for her.
00:17:31And Luke Henderson, who was there last year with Charlie Henderson.
00:17:40So the first couple,
00:17:42they will break the ice
00:17:46of senior rhythmic dance here at Place Belle.
00:17:50They represent Quebec.
00:17:53Elianne Foroglu-Gadouri and Luke Henderson,
00:17:57here is their rhythmic dance
00:17:59on the music of I Feel Love and Last Dance by Donna Summer.
00:18:23Elianne Foroglu-Gadouri and Luke Henderson,
00:18:27here is their rhythmic dance on the music of I Feel Love and Last Dance by Donna Summer.

00:21:06APPLAUSE
00:21:10You talked about it a little earlier,
00:21:12that the flights could haunt the skaters.
00:21:15Too bad, because I was impressed by this new couple.
00:21:20The grip on the hands, sometimes,
00:21:22the connections can be a little more difficult at first,
00:21:25when you have a new partnership,
00:21:27but I found it very beautiful to see together.
00:21:29Yes, a program that flowed well,
00:21:31as you say, for a new couple, really.
00:21:34Unfortunately, the vaults,
00:21:36there were several errors in this vault sequence.
00:21:39Hanging, starting with Luke,
00:21:41then Eliane falling once, then twice.
00:21:44It's an element that's going to be worth almost no points.
00:21:48So, really, we're losing a lot of points,
00:21:52no level, the GOE negative.
00:21:55It's really a shame, very, very sad,
00:21:57because it's a very promising couple,
00:21:59and they won't get the results they're capable of.
00:22:02It went very well,
00:22:04but things happen,
00:22:06it's the experience that comes in, I think,
00:22:08from the partnership between the two.
00:22:10Maybe being far away from the competition,
00:22:12it can be more difficult for Eliane's confidence.
00:22:16She's back on the national scene,
00:22:18for the first time with the seniors,
00:22:20and it's an arena that's full.
00:22:22We don't see that when we do the nationals with the juniors.
00:22:24So, maybe it was a first for her, too,
00:22:26to compete in front of a large crowd,
00:22:28in front of family and friends.
00:22:30We're going to see the first little Luke hang
00:22:32between the two vaults.
00:22:34It wouldn't have been catastrophic at all,
00:22:36but it's here that, once and twice,
00:22:38I don't know if he has something with his soul.
00:22:41It's rare that we're going to see that
00:22:43twice in a row.
00:22:47And sometimes it can be unsettling
00:22:49to see your partner make a mistake.
00:22:51Yes, you're right.
00:22:53Maybe she was in the angle
00:22:55in which she saw Luke.
00:22:57Yes, she saw the little hang,
00:22:59maybe a moment to say to herself,
00:23:01oh no, we just lost points,
00:23:03we just lost focus for the second vault.
00:23:05It's a shame,
00:23:07but we'll have to put it behind them,
00:23:09completely forget it for tomorrow.
00:23:11It's a couple that,
00:23:13two strong skaters,
00:23:15as you say, individually,
00:23:17the connection of the holds,
00:23:19the legs and all that is very good.
00:23:21They really have a level of skating
00:23:23that goes well together.
00:23:25They're going to want to work on their emotional connection
00:23:27with each other.
00:23:29I haven't seen a lot of eyes,
00:23:31one towards the other and complicity,
00:23:33but it's so normal.
00:23:35It's a first year together,
00:23:3740.87 points for Eliane and Luke.
00:23:3940.87,
00:23:41it's certain that,
00:23:43well, it hurts,
00:23:45this score,
00:23:47it's really below what they did
00:23:49in the challenge.
00:23:51So we're going to have to,
00:23:53the performance behind us,
00:23:55take it as an experience and build it.
00:23:57These couples have been together
00:23:59for more than 15 years,
00:24:01so it's certain that it makes a difference,
00:24:03the years of experience together.
00:24:05Our next couple has started.
00:24:07Alyssa Corneva and Kieran McDonald.
00:24:09They train at
00:24:11Kitchener Waterloo Skating Club
00:24:13and their rhythmic dance

01:20:02Well these girls are hip, I really dig those styles they wear
01:20:10And the southern girls with the way they talk, they knock me out when I'm down there
01:20:18The Midwest farmer's daughters really make you feel alright
01:20:26And the northern girls with the way they kiss, they keep the boy from falling out
01:20:34I wish they all could be California girls
01:20:56I wish they all could be California girls
01:26:54Ici Laurence Darvaux
01:26:55J'ai été accompagnée d'Elizabeth Paradis
01:26:58Comme analyste
01:26:59Merci Eli d'avoir été avec moi
