00:00What is the priority for Birmingham City in terms of promotion?
00:30Chris Davies has got them ticking and they've got some clear players who are in that squad
00:35who are certainly better than Ligue 1 quality. What's the sort of situation? I mean, it seems
00:40like it's a real good, positive energy coming from St Andrews, which wasn't obviously evident
00:46if you look maybe 12 months ago from where we are now.
00:50Yeah, I think the division is weirdly irrelevant because Birmingham are going to be promoted
00:55without a shadow of a doubt. I mean, things could go wrong. It's still fairly tight at the top with
01:00Wickham and Rexman and Huddersfield as well. But just the squad quality and the depth that
01:05Birmingham have got when other clubs have got injuries. Birmingham have had injuries of their
01:09own, don't get me wrong, but they've been able to use that depth to push on through. And their form
01:13to start, to end 2024 and to start 2025 has been exceptional under Chris Davies. And as you
01:19alluded to, they've already got players of championship quality. Christian Bielik, the
01:22captain, has been exceptional playing at centre-back or at right-back. Tomoki Iwata and
01:28Peik Seng-ho as the two central midfielders probably will be up there with the best
01:33partnerships in the championship, let alone in Ligue 1. Jay Stansfield leading the line,
01:37of course, we all know about him and his ÂŁ13m fee from Fulham, smashing the Ligue 1 transfer record.
01:42Blackstone, Willem Willemsen, Kessie Andersen at times as well, has shown good form. Alfie May
01:47won the top scorers in Ligue 1 this year as well as last. So they have got such quality,
01:51but they do want to improve further. I think the notable difference now is they're looking at
01:56players potentially on a free transfer before, obviously, able to spend as much money as they
02:01wanted. They didn't have many financial kind of hurdles there. Now they've got to look a little
02:06bit more at keeping things as level as possible in terms of the championships rules. Phil Newman
02:12is one player expected to join. He's a centre-back from Hanover. Blues had a bid rejected for him in
02:17the summer for around ÂŁ3m, and he's going to come in for free at the end of the season,
02:22which is a huge boost. Lots of Bundesliga clubs wanted to sign him. So the fact that he's swapping
02:27a German top tier for the English second is pretty impressive from Blues. Harry Darling,
02:33who's at Swansea City at the moment, gunning for championship play-offs. His contract expires in
02:38the summer. Those talks have stalled, and Blues are interested in signing him. And then Lennon
02:42Maloney, who's a defensive midfielder in the Bundesliga for Heidenheim. He's a US men's
02:48national team player already, got a couple of appearances there, and he is also going to be
02:53available for free. But Birmingham, with their financial power, especially in the wage department,
02:57might be able to seal his signature.
