Jim and Jon discuss why Lions QB Jared Goff doesn't get more respect.
Transcript
00:00We're gonna get to some of what we've seen around us, literally, there's TVs around us,
00:05and some of the way that Jared Goff has been discussed this week rubs me the wrong way.
00:10And I'm a reformed Goff hater, so I think I'm uniquely qualified to be the interpreter
00:16between what we're seeing here and what we're actually seeing on the field.
00:21We open the show with something fun too, because the Lions are everywhere.
00:26Half of Heather's news stories I feel like are about local businesses and local phenomenons
00:30and different things.
00:31And John, you wondered, have people been upgrading their life because of the Lions?
00:35Yeah, I mean, 65,000 people are going to be at Ford Field, give or take a few thousand
00:40on Saturday night.
00:42Many more are going to be watching on TV, whether it's here in Metro Detroit, across
00:45the state of Michigan, or anywhere in the world, and have people upgraded their TV because
00:53they want to see more of the Lions, literally, want to see more of the Lions.
00:57Or maybe you're having a watch party, and it's something that you've been doing, and
01:02all of a sudden, hey, you want a new couch.
01:05Maybe there's a new grill, or smoke, or something to...
01:10And we always talk about the way that women will rationalize purchases.
01:14Oh, well, it was on sale.
01:17Is this the man's way of rationalizing a purchase?
01:20Well, it's for the Lions game, right?
01:22It's for everybody coming over.
01:24We want to have a better experience, whether it's the TV, the couch, the grill.
01:28You've got to have the right food.
01:29The ways the Lions have upgraded your life.
01:31Tom talked about how he sees all those Lions trucks, the four-put-out, the specific...
01:36The special edition.
01:37Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:39And we did the very deep dive into the research of how many there are.
01:44Only 800.
01:45Yeah, 800.
01:46And what did somebody text in earlier?
01:49Because I've seen the silver, is the ones that I've seen.
01:53I know there's a black version.
01:54Those are the only two, quote-unquote, authorized.
01:57Well, yeah.
01:58And some people may have done their own custom wrap.
02:00Right.
02:01You've got a Honolulu blue truck, or blue truck, and you slap a magnet on there.
02:06I've seen that.
02:08But yeah, those are things...
02:12Five years ago, Ford wouldn't even put those in production because they wouldn't have sold.
02:16No.
02:17I mean, you're wearing a shirt you just got.
02:18Yeah.
02:19Great point.
02:21Since I played for the Lions, I have not purchased any Lions gear.
02:24The only thing I've done last year at the Rams-Lions playoff game, I got a new hat.
02:30Every once in a while on Victory Mondays, I'll wear that in.
02:32But I didn't have any other clothes that were Lions clothes.
02:36So it could be your truck, it could be your wardrobe, it could be your living room, it
02:40could be your TV, it could be a way that the Lions have nudged you, upgraded your life.
02:46Yeah.
02:48If you missed that earlier, open the show.
02:51Odyssey Rewind.
02:52What was that, John?
02:55Yeah.
02:56Okay.
02:58So that's there for Lions fans.
03:01This golf thing, okay?
03:04If we can move past that.
03:06Yeah.
03:07Why doesn't get golf, why doesn't golf get more credit?
03:11Well, because he's not flashy.
03:15He's not the guy that, you know, he's not going to have a whole lot of highlights.
03:19The highlights are going to be about J-Mo, or about the trick plays, Amon Ross, A. Brown
03:24flipping the ball to Jameer Gibbs coming across the formation, right, LaPorta, and the explosive
03:31plays.
03:32We talked about yesterday, whether it's Montgomery or Gibbs, and like all of that is the conversation
03:37surrounding the Detroit Lions, and it's kind of always been that way for Jared Goff.
03:41He is, even when you hear him talk, right?
03:43He's not the most flamboyant individual.
03:48No.
03:49No.
03:50And look, there's a different classification of quarterback that I don't think he's in.
03:56The Mahomes, Allen, and Lamar tier.
03:59Because of some of their physical gifts.
04:01Sure.
04:02But I think we've gone too far when we're putting Jaden Daniels ahead of him.
04:06Which is what I've seen from multiple shows this week.
04:11And up yesterday, they asked, who would you trust game-winning drive more?
04:14And real people said Jaden Daniels.
04:19Yesterday on FS1, Danny Parkins said, Jaden Daniels is better than Jared Goff.
04:27What?
04:41So right now, no.
05:04We don't know what Jaden Daniels becomes.
05:06I mean, he could be unbelievable.
05:11He's had a remarkable rookie season.
05:14We don't know what he becomes.
05:15What we know about Jared Goff is, he's taken a team to the Super Bowl.
05:20He is on his second organization, and he's taken them to the NFC Championship game.
05:23And when he got here, it was the worst roster in football.
05:28He is, and I'm going to try and consolidate some of the comments on Twitch, where I talked
05:36about the playmakers getting the credit.
05:40It's also Ben Johnson who is getting a lot of the credit for the trick plays.
05:43Jared Goff's the one that delivers those trick plays.
05:46He's the one that makes it all possible, and yet he gets no credit for it.
05:53When they say, if I was starting a team today, I would pick Jaden Daniels, is it just because
05:58of the age?
05:59Because I don't even think that's accurate or fair.
06:01Jared Goff is in the prime of his career.
06:03For an NFL quarterback, he's kind of at the midpoint.
06:06And if we want to say, well, Jaden Daniels has done so much with what he's inherited,
06:10do we not realize Jared Goff came to Detroit at a low point, both for him and for the team?
06:15They effectively started over with him at ground zero.
06:17And what's happened in a short span?
06:20He's leading the number one offense in football, and I know he has help, and he certainly is
06:24a quarterback that needs help, like many of them do.
06:27But they aren't the number one offense in football, in spite of Jared Goff.
06:30You know what I mean?
06:31They win on third and fourth down, from the pocket, with precision.
06:35I don't know how we're going to do this thing where we're going to hold it against Jared
06:37Goff.
06:38He is a guy who, when he got to Cal, they were a one-win team.
06:41When he left, they won eight games and went to a bowl game.
06:44When he got to St. Louis, before they moved to L.A., they were a bad football team with
06:47a four-win season.
06:48John, to your point, he did quarterback them in a Super Bowl and some big playoff wins.
06:53And he's only proven the point again in Detroit.
06:56So the idea that I'd want to start with Daniels because he's uniquely equipped to deal with
07:00a bad situation, it's all Jared Goff has done is be resilient and overcome and improve.
07:06And I don't think it's at all accurate to say that Jared Goff is below Jaden Daniels.
07:13That's where I think we get a little too into the traits, where we say he's faster and has
07:17a bigger arm.
07:18So?
07:19Right.
07:20So?
07:21I mean, I think that's part of the case for Allen, Lamar, and Mahomes, but those guys
07:24are winning MVPs in Super Bowls.
07:26Jaden Daniels is a rookie.
07:28So we ask you guys the question, why doesn't Goff get more respect?
07:33Is it because he's not flashy enough?
07:35He's not mobile enough?
07:37John, maybe your point is the credit gets dispersed among everybody on the offense and
07:41he doesn't get enough of it.
07:43So then you also have to look and say, OK, well, who's the star of the show?
07:47And in Washington, it's clearly Jaden Daniels, the star of the show.
07:52But they don't have an Amon Ross St. Brown.
07:55They don't have a Gibbs or even a Montgomery, and they don't have a Laporta.
08:00They don't have a Jamo.
08:02You start talking about all the stars that Detroit has, and Jerry Goff is the one that
08:10delivers the ball.
08:11He's the one that gets everybody in the right position at the right time.
08:15But he's also the guy when you talk about, and you're only talking about the skill set
08:21of the quarterback in regards to big arm, and he can run.
08:25There are so many more traits that make up a great NFL quarterback, and Jaden Daniels
08:32may develop those.
08:34But as you heard in the quote there where he's talking about the continuity of the system,
08:38it's year one for Jaden Daniels, year one for Dan Quinn, year two for the ownership
08:45of this team.
08:46Like they haven't even had a chance to have continuity.
08:48So to make that part of the equation is dumb.
08:51You're not comparing anything that's the same.
08:54No, and if the guys switched places, would the commanders be in the playoffs with Jared
08:59Goff?
09:00I think you could ask the other question.
09:02Are the Lions the one seed with a rookie quarterback, even one as good as Jaden Daniels?
09:05No, they lost to the Cowboys this season, the Steelers this season.
09:08He may have played more mistake-prone football than a Jared Goff who's been largely clean
09:14this season.
09:16You think the Lions would be 15-2 with Daniels?
09:19I don't think so.
09:20Yeah, I mean, seriously, this is such a joke.
09:22Somebody texts fake news.
09:23I actually think it is borderline.
09:25These guys, these talking heads on most of these networks now, they get caught up in
09:29hype.
09:30You would never hear an original opinion right now.
09:33How about this topic for them?
09:35Sean McVay scapegoated Jared Goff.
09:38Look, was McVay right?
09:39As I said, hard to blame him when he did get the bigger-arm quarterback and won a Super
09:43Bowl.
09:44But they both won.
09:45He couldn't be right.
09:46So, I mean, he blamed it all on Goff while they did end up upgrading slightly at quarterback.
09:54I mean, Jared Goff was written off.
09:57Who at the station said that they thought Goff would be the guy?
10:04Initially, I can't imagine very many did.
10:06And the bridge narrative was real.
10:08And I was one of the last guys to jump on board.
10:10Like, I mean, I don't know.
10:11I'm trying to come at this from a position where I think I have been where they are,
10:16right?
10:17Where you look at Goff and see what he can't do.
10:19But I think he's been here in Detroit long enough and he's shown us enough of what he
10:21can do.
10:23And I don't know why other people are ignorant to it.
10:25They're putting their blinders on.
10:26Like, we're propping up Jaden Daniels, maybe the way some did CJ Stroud a year ago.
10:30Let's let the guy get in the league, have teams adjust to him, go through some bumps
10:34and bruises before we prop him above more proven winning successful quarterbacks.
10:39And here's the thing.
10:40I mean, when Goff went to the ramps, when he was drafted number one overall, he went
10:44to one of the worst teams in football.
10:47That's the reason they were drafting number one overall.
10:50And in three years, took him to a Super Bowl.
10:52Now, it's not all him.
10:53It's never just all one person.
10:56But now he's on the doorstep of doing it with the second franchise of taking a team to the
11:02Super Bowl.
11:03And let's just wait and see in a couple of years.
11:07Jaden Daniels, does he get Washington to a Super Bowl in that three-year time span?
