00:00After 15 months of war in the Gaza Strip, a conflict that's destabilised the broader
00:05Middle East and triggered worldwide protests, an agreement has been reached, following months
00:10of negotiations brokered by the US and Qatar.
00:14Qatar, the Arab Republic of Egypt and the United States are happy to announce the success
00:18of joint mediation efforts in order to reach a deal between the parties in conflict in
00:23the Gaza Territory to exchange prisoners and hostages and a return to a prolonged truce
00:28that achieves a permanent ceasefire between the two sides.
00:32Whilst both Israel and Hamas are on board, Israel says some final details remain, with
00:37its security cabinet and government due to ratify on Thursday.
00:42The deal will unfold in three phases, beginning with an initial six-week ceasefire.
00:47The first phase will see a hostage-prisoner exchange between Israel and Gaza.
00:52Hamas is to free 33 hostages, women, children, the sick, injured and the elderly, in exchange
00:58for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
01:01Some 100 hostages remain captive inside the Strip, but the Israeli military believe at
01:06least a third of them are dead.
01:08Phase one will also see a partial withdrawal of Israeli troops pulling out of Gaza's most
01:12populated areas, allowing thousands of displaced Gazans in the southern Strip to return to
01:17their homes in the besieged north, as well as facilitate the movement of the sick and
01:22injured.
01:23The deal also specifies 600 truckloads of humanitarian aid is to enter Gaza every day
01:28of the ceasefire, flooding the enclave with much-needed food, medicine, supplies and fuel
01:34to alleviate the soaring malnutrition and disease.
01:38Phase two and three, though, remain somewhat in flux, and requires a successful phase one
01:43in order to move forward.
01:45Further details are to be negotiated on the 16th day of phase one for what could be the
01:49permanent end to the war.
01:51The US president has confirmed that if negotiations drag on, the truce will continue.
01:56The plan says if negotiations take longer than six weeks, the ceasefire will continue
02:03as long as the negotiations continue.
02:07If conditions are met, Hamas will release all the remaining hostages, mostly male soldiers,
02:12in exchange for more Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.
02:16It's also expected the second phase would see Israel initiate its complete withdrawal
02:20from Gaza.
02:21The details of the third and final phase remain unclear, depending on the success of the two
02:26stages before it.
02:28Should the conditions of phase two be met, the final phase will include the return of
02:32all remaining dead bodies, with the remains of deceased Israeli hostages exchanged for
02:37those of deceased Palestinian fighters.
02:40The final step will also trigger the reconstruction plan of what's left of the Gaza Strip, to
02:45be conducted under international supervision.
02:48Questions remain, however, about the enclave's long-term future, including who will rule
02:52the territory or oversee the reconstruction.
