Hall of Famer Ty Law joins! Is NE still a free agent destination? Will the Pats spend this offseason? What does Law think of Vrabel, Wolf, Krafts and spending?

00:00Now a man who credits our guest earlier, Mike Rable, with being responsible for his interception
00:06in the Super Bowl, Ty Law. Ty, good morning. Thank you. Hey, good morning, guys. How you doing?
00:11We're doing great. How are you? I'm hanging. I'm hanging, man. Just dropped my kid off at school,
00:17finally got to do that since y'all, so I can call in today. You know what I mean? So,
00:22got to take my little buddy to school. By the way, nice to see you at the
00:26Odyssey holiday party the other night. You made the effort, unlike Wiggy, so appreciate that.
00:33Yeah, Wiggy and Cocoa, I mean, you got to be a team player, y'all.
00:37I ain't seen either one of y'all. I couldn't. My household was sick.
00:40No, that's not an excuse. We don't, no excuses. No excuses.
00:46I agree. I agree. I'm sure everybody was drinking Corvus.
00:50I'm a small part of the team. That's like, you're going out there,
00:53suiting up, you got the quarterback, you got it. I mean, it's just, oh, man. I came off the
00:58bitch. I come off the bitch, guys. Wiggy, y'all owe the company, man. Y'all owe Odyssey, y'all owe
01:03Greg. Debt on y'all, too, man. All right. I got you. Greg needs more.
01:09All right. So, listen, Mike Rables, the guy, we talked a little bit about that with you last week
01:16before we knew, and how are you feeling about that? Man, I feel great about it. I still
01:24a little bit disappointed for Gerard. I know we had to move on, but, man, that is the absolute
01:31guy that we need in the building. He's been there. He has a head coaching resume already.
01:37I don't even know why they let him go in the first place, but, hey, that's kudos for the
01:43Patriots. We're going to be all right. We're going to be all right. Like I said, you still got to
01:46give them time. I hope nobody's out there faking Super Bowl right off the rip, because that ain't
01:52happening. That ain't happening. We want to improve, but I think Rable is going to be the
01:57guy to lead the charge and create the culture that's missing around here. The rebuild has
02:03been going on for quite some time. I guess you could argue since Tom Brady left. How long does
02:09it take, do you think, for Mike Rable to get this franchise to be competitive? And by competitive,
02:15I mean you're a playoff football team. I say by year three, we'll be in the playoffs.
02:25You got to think, he already came in now. He has a great prospect as quarterback. We should be,
02:31the foundation is there. Dre may have shown that he can play. Now, it's a little too early. We can't
02:38say that's the next cometh of a great quarterback, but he shows some, he played great ball for a
02:44rookie, and I always emphasize for a rookie. We're going to see how he progresses into next year.
02:50I'll say you got to build around him. Let's spend some damn money, too, you guys. I don't like to
02:54try to spend another man's money, but Mr. Krabs, you got to spend some money. You got to spend some
02:59money, dog. Yeah, I mean, I don't know. The answer he gave was, it wasn't burn some cash.
03:08Yeah. It was, we got to get guys through certainly free agency and spending a little money,
03:15but through the draft as well. I don't know about that. I don't know about that part of it.
03:22That worries me a little bit, that they're going to be reluctant. Not that he's going to be reluctant.
03:27Yeah. Right. I've said this before, that New England is no longer a destination for free
03:34agents. It was a destination before because it was the culture of people wanted to win,
03:38and they thought they had a great chance to win a championship. Right now, that's not the case.
03:44Let's call it what it is. If you come in New England, it's going to be some zeros behind
03:50those numbers on that check. You know what I mean? Right now, again, a lot of people took less money
03:55to come and play with us. Rodney Harrison being one of them, he could have made more money,
04:00but he wanted to win and play great football, play with Tom Brady, just be a part of everything
04:07we was building. Right now, ain't nobody doing that. Who does that? If you do that, you go to
04:14Miami. You can at least get some good weather and some tax breaks. Right. It's a decent nightlife.
04:21Ty, you played with Mike longer than I do. I think the one thing that really is going to set
04:27him apart when it comes to spending money and getting guys in free agency or maybe looking to
04:32trade for disgruntled, really talented players is his personality of he's not afraid to basically
04:42say what's on his mind. Is that going to give him an advantage when it comes to dealing with
04:47the crafts where he's going to basically let them know in meetings like, hey, you better open up the
04:54checkbook or it's not going to be good for us. He's just going to he's going to come out of
04:58uncut and raw. Absolutely. That's who Mike Bray will is. I mean, you know, they hired him to do
05:04a job. So I think he's going to demand that he lets they let him do his job. You know what I mean?
05:11Because I think coach Belichick was like that in the sense, you know, let me do my job. I got this.
05:16You know, I mean, of course, Mr. Craft and the craft family, they have the final say so on
05:21everything. But in this position, you hired him for this position. You got to let him take lead.
05:26And I think they'll do that. It's like if he needs some money. Yes, he's going to have to
05:29go ask Mr. Craft. We need this player. Can I have some money? That's OK. You know what I mean? But
05:35as far as how he communicates with them, I think he's going to be straightforward. He's going to
05:40be the Mike Rable that we all know and love. That's that's that's going to say what's on his
05:45mind. And that's a good thing. You got to be able to stand up to ownership or anybody else.
05:49Ownership management. You got to be able to stand up to.
05:53Ty, he's emphasized accountability, especially when it comes to players and whether it was
05:58yesterday or today talking about putting the team first and doing what's best for the team. And in
06:05response, he will do that for these players. But he's also doesn't seem shy of benching guys if
06:10they're not up to snuff. He's talked about being late, not not working out correctly,
06:15not being in good shape. Do you trust him that he's going to follow through with that in his
06:20first year here, that if guys aren't up to up to speed, they're out of here?
06:25Absolutely. I mean, first of all, you got to know who you can cut and who you can't. You
06:31don't make an example out of one of your main players. I mean, coaches killed me with that
06:36when he talked about he made an example of, yeah, you know who you make an example of.
06:40Yeah. I mean, hell, Tom Brady walked in late. Damn it. He planned one time in my career. If
06:46I walked in late, damn it. You know, I'm going to be on the field within the next snap, two snaps.
06:51You want to bench me for a start? I mean, come on, man. So, you know, there's levels to it.
06:56Let's just be realistic about it. But I think he is going to change the culture
07:01what's around there right now because they don't know how to win. I mean,
07:06you have to do something drastic just to get your point across. But I think once he settles down,
07:11again, everybody that walks through that building, guys, if you've been there,
07:15you see all the pictures and all the glory days. You see Mike Rabel there as a player,
07:21someone who was well-respected, who's been to, what, four or five Super Bowls. I mean, one,
07:27three. Come on now. That's respect right there. As soon as guys walk through the door,
07:32they're going to want his knowledge. And that's where I think it's going to happen.
07:37Sorry, Ty. Yeah, I think the biggest thing that I was going to get your perspective on,
07:41because you were there with him, is that Gerard Mayo was a guy that could relate to the player,
07:48whereas I think Mike Rabel is a guy that will command the player's respect
07:53and has an understanding of how to communicate. He has two sons that are, you know, I think in
07:58their 20s or something to that effect. He's a guy that is closer to the player that can bridge
08:03Belichick, the coaching style, with an updated way of getting it across to the players that are
08:08in the NFL today. I 100% agree with you on that one. He's going to come in, like I said,
08:15Gerard can relate to him, you know, but he's a first-time head coach. Yeah, he was a player,
08:20and he was a good player, but Mike Rabel brings something different because he's been out of the
08:25game. I mean, he's been a part of the championships. He's been a head coach. He's coached
08:31in college, so he, like I said, he has, you know, young men and sons, so yes, he's going to be able
08:36to relate to him on a different level, and I think it's going to be good for the locker room,
08:42but the drastic change is going to come, and I am looking forward to who is going to be that
08:48example, because they got to make an example out of somebody, y'all. I mean, you don't want to make
08:52light of nobody's job, but if you ain't getting it done, man, that's the old Bill Parcells way. He'll
08:58get you out of there. You know, he will get you out of there, and I think Mike Rabel is going to
09:02get people out of there that does not fit the culture or does not want to be a part of the
09:06culture that he's trying to build. You told me yesterday you're all in on Josh McDaniels as the
09:11OC. Absolutely. I mean, bring the old bad back together because, guess what, just because you've
09:18had success and didn't have much success as a head coach, like, say, Josh McDaniel,
09:24that does not mean that you can't be one of the top, you know, coordinators in the game,
09:29and he's proven that time and time again. Now, and guess what, he gets other head coaching
09:34opportunity jobs because of the job that he does as a coordinator, so bringing that back,
09:40they know the system, they know the building, and they're going to automatically demand,
09:44you know, respect and admiration from those guys, you know, seeking guidance, and that's what
09:50the team needs. Now, we want guys to seek the guidance of those who've been on championship
09:56teams, who had that run. It was a damn 20-year run. Yeah, Tom Brady in the building, but guess
10:02what, these guys were around Tom Brady. You know, Josh McDaniels helped, you know, Tom Brady become
10:09who he now is to go. You know what I mean? Mike Rabel won championships. This is where it all
10:15started. So, I mean, I love it. So, if Josh gets this job, I think it'll be great for the New
10:20England Faithful. Sam Darnold didn't help himself last night when it comes to getting a Ty Law-like
10:26deal. I don't know if you watched any of that game last night, but any surprises for you?
10:34Last weekend was not great football, but... No, it wasn't.
10:39Any surprises for you when it came to the weekend or last night?
10:44Yes, it was the game you're talking about. I mean, for the Minnesota to go out there and shit the
10:50bed like that, swear jar, that is absolutely ridiculous, especially with, you know, L.A.
10:57I was kind of, as the game was going on, I was, you know, rooting for L.A. They've gone through
11:02so much up there. You know, people, you know, it's a game, and this real-life stuff happened
11:08out there. You know, my daughter is out there. You know what I mean? And, unfortunately, they're
11:12okay. You know, just some smog, some smoke, but people really lost everything. So, coming into
11:17the game, you would think that because so much is going on that they wouldn't be all the way there
11:24meant to prepare, but I guess that was their outlet. You know, they're standing with each
11:28other, standing for the city. So, I'm glad that they did win because they need something,
11:34you know, right now because the devastation is going on out there.
11:38Ty, last one for me. When you look at Vrabel, and I personally think by him taking the New
11:47England job, it puts even more pressure on him because, like you said, he played for the
11:54organization. He was basically part of building what this dynasty is and the expectations around
12:03here or through the roof where he could have went somewhere else and not had all that stuff with
12:08him. So, for me, I look at Vrabel welcoming that challenge, and when you get a coach like that or
12:14you get somebody cut from his cloth who welcomes a challenge that he knows is going to be so much
12:20more pressure than going anywhere else, I think that's something that's really going to help him
12:24succeed, and basically that's part of his personality now that people get to see.
12:32I agree because why wouldn't you want that challenge? I mean, you're going to have
12:37expectations no matter where you go, of course, being the head coach, but yes, it's more pressure
12:42because there's been some down seasons. Yeah, you are a reminder of what things used to be.
12:48So, yeah, it's going to be that pressure, but I think he's going to welcome that with open arms,
12:52and that's why he's here. I mean, he could have took any other job out because, I mean,
12:55this wasn't the only suitor we know that, so we're glad to be able to get him. I mean,
13:00he probably backed up the Brinks truck full of Rabe, you know what I mean? Coach's salaries
13:04ain't out there like that, but he spent some money, so that's a first start because I know
13:09that that's a part of it, too. Yeah, I want to coach, but I ain't stupid, you know what I mean?
13:13So, Rabe got his money. Before you go, I want you on record Ravens or Bills this weekend.
13:22I'm going to Ravens. I'm going to Ravens, man. I mean, Lamar Jackson is playing out his mind.
13:30Derrick Henry, I don't know how they're going to, you know, stop those two, but Josh Allen,
13:35you know, I got to give him some credit, man. He put the team on his shoulders,
13:39and they're playing some good football, but, you know, when it gets down to a game like this,
13:44man, Lamar Jackson can do it with his arms, his legs, and then he has some help,
13:49you know what I mean? He has some receivers out there that's playing some decent ball,
13:53too, you know what I mean? So, I just think that they have more firepower overall than the Buffalo
13:58Bills. All right, Ty Law, great to talk to you, and we will talk to you again next week.
14:04All right, guys. Later.
