Four in 10 Brits switched up their routines over the last year – with midweek roasts and cups of tea before bed helping households to break the mould.

A poll of 2,000 adults found those making changes have done so in a bid to save money (64 per cent), energy (56 per cent) and be more efficient (45 per cent).

One in three (32 per cent) have ditched their loyalty to a certain supermarket, and 30 per cent started cooking in batches for the week ahead.

A fifth (19 per cent) decided to watch less TV in the evenings, 22 per cent are going to bed earlier, with 11 per cent setting their morning alarms to an hour earlier to make the most of the day.

Many Brits are also making significant changes to how they use energy in the home, as 24 per cent now limit the number of appliances in use at one time.

While 23 per cent consider what time they should do ‘high energy-consuming’ tasks.

The study was commissioned by Smart Energy GB to highlight how people who embrace more flexible home habits could save money on their bills through energy reward schemes, which can be accessed with a smart meter and reward customers for using energy at different times of the day.

00:00I love our smart meter display. I look at it quite a lot.
00:03It's in a prominent position in the kitchen.
00:05If I'm doing anything, if I put anything on, I'll see the impact it has.
00:08Do you think you look at that more than your phone?
00:10Oh no, steady.
00:19Johnny Michael, thank you very much for having me. It's lovely to be here.
00:22I'm interested to hear about how you're using your smart meter to take advantage of an energy reward scheme.
00:29Can you tell me a bit about that then?
00:30It's super easy. Our energy company sends us a message on the app to say,
00:35try to avoid using electricity at this time and we get rewarded for doing so.
00:39So how has being part of the energy reward scheme changed how you use energy?
00:44We were already tracking our usage with the smart meter display,
00:48so now we know when to spend and when to save.
00:50How do you save then?
00:51Well, we'll get a notification via the app.
00:53I'll put it in our diary to say electricity is going to be cheaper this time
00:58and then we'll know to plan around it.
01:00So we might wash up a couple of bits by hand rather than having to put the dishwasher on
01:04or delay the washing machine until we know it's going to be cheaper.
01:07Yeah, absolutely. When we get the notification, then it's go time.
01:10What's go time?
01:11We charge the car, put the dishwasher on, we'll do some batch baking.
01:15Including one of my master bakes.
01:17It makes sense though, doesn't it, if you're getting cheaper electricity?
01:19It makes so much sense. The amount of money you can save is considerable.
01:23It does run the house so much more efficiently. Brilliant for the planet as well.
01:26I love that.
