Emergency services are searching for a surfer who is believed to have been attacked by a shark at a popular surf beach on South Australia’s West Coast

00:00The search is on for the body of a 28-year-old Port Lincoln man who police believe is the
00:07victim of a fatal shark attack.
00:10He was going for a wave at Granites near Streaky Bay off the state's west coast.
00:15Now yesterday afternoon, a fisher posted to social media saying that he was aware of a
00:20large and aggressive shark very close to Granites.
00:24And later, just after seven last night, witnesses saw the attack.
00:28And according to police, one witness recovered his surfboard.
00:32The surfer is yet to be found, and police say that they're pretty confident that sadly
00:37the young surfer has been killed by the shark, and they're preparing a report for the coroner.
00:42Shark attacks in South Australia, generally speaking, are rare.
00:46But in the last 18 months, there's been an unprecedented spate of attacks in South Australia,
00:52including three fatal ones.
00:54And just over a year ago, a 55-year-old man was taken by a shark at Granites, and his
00:59body was never recovered.
01:01So this is really, really upsetting for the surf community.
01:05They're going to be feeling this one really deeply, and also the community of the west
01:09coast of South Australia.
01:11Scientists don't know why this is happening, but what's for sure is that shark mitigation,
01:16programs and technology will be front of the conversation.
