At the start of the year, we appointed our building contractors, E W Beard, to begin the biggest development in our history, building a new Hospice for Surrey and Hampshire. They started on the groundworks, digging foundations and installing all the drainage requirements needed before construction could begin.
Once this was complete, the concrete floor was poured and the reinforced concrete frame was constructed, forming the two-storey part of building. Suddenly the new Hospice was starting to take shape
Progressing to the next stage
The bricklayers then began building the walls, and very quickly bedrooms, corridors and door frames took shape. We were able to walk around the building and get a true feeling for how all the hard work at the planning stage was paying off.
The steel framework system is now being installed around the two-storey part of the building, and the brickwork is nearly ready for the next level, when scaffolding will be required for the walls to be taken up to roof height. Meanwhile, roofing is being laid on the flat roof sections of the building, as our contractors work to get the building watertight as soon as possible. Outside the In-Patient Unit (IPU), the courtyard garden areas have been constructed and raised planters have been built.
Visiting the site, and even being able to walk into one of the IPU rooms, has been so special, and has enabled us to start seeing the building where we will provide our specialist and compassionate care for our patients and their families and carers.
Funding your new Hospice
We are continuing to work hard to raise the funds needed to complete this build. In September, we were thrilled to announce reaching a major £5 million fundraising milestone in our £6 million capital appeal target. Raising this amount of money, in addition to the £25,000 we need to raise every day to fund our ongoing care, really is a true testament to our incredible supporters, to whom we are incredibly grateful.
Thank you for your support
Building a new Hospice, and continuing to fund the care that we provide every day for our patients and their loved ones, is only possible thanks to our amazing community.
Thank you for all the support you have given us this year. Together, we are making a huge difference to the lives of local people and building a lasting legacy for many generations to come.

00:00Hello, my name is Paul Harris. I'm the Head of Facilities and Sustainability for Phyllis
00:07Tuckwell. I'd like to take you on a visual journey of our new hospice build and the progress
00:14that we've made so far this year up to the start of December 24. First of all, you will
00:21see some drone footage, which gives you a good overview of the whole site. You'll see
00:26the inpatient unit bedrooms being formed, the central courtyard space with the planters
00:34having been built and where the crane is located. You'll see the two-storey section of the building
00:42completed. We're now going to go on a journey of what
00:53will be the inpatient unit corridor, the main corridor that wraps around the whole
00:58of the inpatient unit. And you'll see what will be bedrooms on the left and right-hand
01:04side of this main corridor. And we're approaching now the end of one of the corridors before
01:10we do a left-hand turn, where we will go into one of the patient's bedrooms, where you will
01:18see the large opening on the one end, which will accommodate concertina doors out onto
01:25private garden space. Here we are walking again through the main corridor space, showing
01:35the areas that will take you into the main courtyard space and planters. Back into the
01:50main corridors, again, bedrooms, assisted bathrooms, and facilities for staff and patients
01:56and families. Now we're returning to the end of the IPU corridor, returning back to
02:20the two-storey section of the building, where we'll go up one of the new staircases, which
02:30will take us to the open plan first floor area, which is primarily going to be used
02:36for staff spaces. This will include a canteen space for staff, veranda, and then into our
02:56educational training rooms. At the front of the building, we have a large filtration tank that's
03:17been put underneath what will be the car park, which will store all our water from our roofs.
03:22And here, a final overview of the inpatient unit area. Thank you.
