00:00To continue our sports banter, let's go back to the interview with Mr. Ramon Tatsuzara,
00:13Executive Vice President of FIVB, in line with his goals and plans to make volleyball a more popular sport.
00:21Let's watch the whole interview.
00:23Thank you, Raf and Bernadette. I'm very honored to be your guest here.
00:29Sir, you are now the President of AVC and PNVF, and you have been added to the role of Executive Vice President of FIVB.
00:42So with that, what is our vision for the development of volleyball in the Philippines?
00:48Part of my mandate as a President of the Philippine National Volleyball Federation,
00:56and was elected also President of the Asian Volleyball Confederation last month, in August.
01:02This continues to do my job, not only in the Philippines, in Asia, and in the world,
01:09being elected or appointed as Executive Vice President of the FIVB. It means it's more work,
01:17more activities for me to help and support. I used to be with the Empowerment Commission
01:26of the FIVB for the last four years, so we have been helping a lot of national teams worldwide.
01:32Of course, including the Philippines, we are one of the biggest beneficiaries of this
01:39Empowerment Program of the FIVB.
01:41Aside from that, Sir, do we have any other short-term goals as the Vice President of FIVB?
01:49Well, during the elections of AVC, I presented my 10-point agenda for AVC for the next four years.
02:05The first one is, of course, to put volleyball to be in the most popular sports, top five popular
02:12sports in Asia. That's my number one strategy. The second one is to have a permanent AVC
02:19headquarters in Bangkok. Our headquarters in Bangkok is temporary, but now we are having a
02:26new house. It's a new house, it's a big house, and hopefully by first quarter, the AVC house
02:33should be ready. Of course, I'd like to form or organize a new important committee in AVC,
02:44the Athletes Committee. The athletes have to be involved in the affairs of Asia.
02:50Another one is empowerment, empowering women in sports, women in volleyball,
02:56empowering the national teams and federations. Of course, I'd like to push for some of the
03:02national federations from different countries. We are 65 countries in Asia. It's to do a co-hosting
03:11of international events. In the Philippines, we've been hosting a lot. Thailand, of course,
03:16Japan are also hosting a lot, and Vietnam also. But I'd like to push for more countries in Asia
03:23to host more international events, Asia or FIV events. Then there is a part that we put
03:33what we call safeguarding to protect our athletes and officials. The highlight, of course, is to
03:41partner with technology, broadcast, licensing. Last on the agenda of my 10-point agenda is the
03:53hosting of the first AVC Gala Night, honoring fail basers in volleyball in Asia. So the best
04:01player, best male player, best female player, beach, indoor, best national federation. So
04:08this highlights the 10-point agenda for me, for Asia.
04:12All right. Sir, do we have other plans to support FIVB, the athletes, coaches, and staff?
04:20You know, since we were part of the empowerment program of FIVB, FIVB has been sending us foreign
04:29coaches as a national team. So, you know, we have Brazilian coaches for indoor women
04:34and for beach volleyball, and now we have a men's Italian coach, since we are hosting the
04:41Men's World Championship next year. So this is part of the support that they're giving,
04:47aside from helping our national teams competing abroad. And our world ranking,
04:54men and women, were 117 the last two years. So after this empowerment program, our women now
05:02is 57 in the world from 117, and our men is 64 in the world from 117. Hopefully next year,
05:10we can improve more on our world ranking, because we get a lot of points by competing a lot.
05:16Yes. Well, Sir, you mentioned about our hosting next year. How is our update on the solo hosting
05:24of the Philippines in FIVB? And this is historical. Yeah. Of course, I'd like to thank
05:30His Excellency President Marcos and the First Lady, Lisa Araneta Marcos. Last September 14,
05:37we had the one-year countdown here in Manila at Solaire, and the next day was September 15.
05:44It was a concert being held for the first time in Malacanang Park,
05:50hosted by the first family. So this means that the government is supporting this
05:56biggest world volleyball event next year for the first time with 32 teams. Of course, we have,
06:02of course, Senators Alan and Pierre Quintanao who are helping us, POC President Bambal Tontino is
06:07on the board, PSC Chairman Bachman. Of course, our patron in sports, MVP, Manny B. Pangilinan,
06:16is also supporting us a lot. So hopefully we are moving forward. By next month, we are moving to a
06:24new organizing committee office, BGC. So we'll put in place everything there to prepare.
06:33Yes, Sir Tats, just a quick follow-up. How is our roster?
06:40Now, all the national team players are in the club season. Our women players are having the PBL
06:46now, but we have also our setter in the national team, CGI, is playing in Japan.
06:55And the men are also having their club season, the Spikers Tour. So the club season starts usually
07:02October to May. This is not only in the Philippines, but also worldwide, Asian, worldwide.
07:11They go to the club. After the club, they go back to the national team. So by
07:15end of April, the national team players will report.
07:22We'll report and then we'll prepare the competitions for next year. So there's a lot
07:26of competitions again next year. We have the first ever ABC Champions League. This is a new
07:32league that we will launch in May, under my presidency. And then we have the ABC Challenge Cup.
07:39And then of course, we have other events like Southeast Asian League,
07:44CB League, we call it. And then we have the World Championships.
07:47Next year.
07:51Again, it's a good exposure for our team.
07:57We have the World Beach Ball Tour this coming weekend, November 28 to December 1 at Nuvali
08:03Suncourse.
08:08Not like the indoor, it has a season for the club.
08:17For FIVV.
08:21Normally, the national team, after the club season, if there is the first tournament,
08:28usually May or June, you have one month to prepare. Not only us, but all other countries
08:34are the same. But for the World Championship, I'm sure the program that our coach Angelino
08:41from Italy are doing is to have a European tour. Of course, training camps in Japan and Korea
08:48before the World Championship in September.
08:52Some months ago, you appeared in the PSA Forum.
09:12Do you still have a line of communication between our national team and Jaja's camp?
09:17Yes. Jaja has been communicating with our head coach,
09:22Jorge. And it will depend on her schedule if she will still like to play in the national team.
09:30Jia has been playing in Japan, but she's coming back to play in the national team.
09:34And other players who are playing outside of the Philippines. So she's still welcome,
09:39of course, if she really wants to play in the national team.
09:44Because FEDERATION OF THE ORIGIN is still in the Philippines, even though she's a Japanese citizen.
09:49Sir, your involvement in volleyball in three different levels, local, Asian, and then world.
09:58In the big picture, what can you say about the development of volleyball here in the Philippines?
10:06I think this is a big opportunity to have a lot of collaboration, cooperation with other countries.
10:16We have good relationship with European countries that our teams can play.
10:21Even our beach volleyball was in Italy for a competition early this year.
10:27Our men's and women's ALAS indoor will have a lot of competitions also next year,
10:34whether in Asia or in Europe. So there's a lot of opportunities, competitions.
10:41Because as discussed with our foreign coaches, we need at least 30 matches in a year.
10:47And 30 matches is a lot. So you need to compete a lot, whether here or abroad or somewhere.
10:56So this puts to our objective that the more they play, the more that we will improve.
11:03And we're targeting that they play much more outside of the Philippines and come back for the competitions in the Philippines.
11:14All right. What can you say about the progress of volleyball in the Philippines?
11:19Because we have a lot of volleyball leagues here and the support of our fans.
11:26I think the Filipinos are volleyball crazy fans.
11:32There's a lot. I think we are one of the most important volleyball fans in the world.
11:38In fact, during the FIB World Congress in Portugal,
11:42Philippines is one of the highlights as a fan crazy country for volleyball worldwide.
11:49Not only in Asia, but in the last three years we've been hosting the VNL.
11:55Volleyball fans are really there to cheer, not only we don't even have a team,
12:00but to cheer for all the teams that are competing in the VNL.
12:04And now comes the World Championship with 32 teams.
12:06I'm sure there's a lot of exciting games both in Moa Arena and Araneta Coliseum.
12:15So we'll be able to watch a lot for 17 days next year, September 12 to 28 for the World Championship.
12:24That bodes well for us because we'll be able to see different leagues around the world.
12:30The Philippines is a viable venue for big events, invaluable.
12:35I've been talking to some of the presidents of the national federations like Canada,
12:40USA, Italy, of course Japan, Slovenia, Korea.
12:45They would like to come earlier before the World Championship.
12:48They like to come two weeks before.
12:50And there are some interests from our local government to host these teams.
12:55To do some social activity, clinics for the kids.
12:58So they're most welcome to come earlier.
13:00So this is really a good chance for us to really expose a lot of opportunities,
13:06not only for volleyball itself, but for also the local government and for our children also.
13:11Yes, alright.
13:12Thank you so much, Sir Ramon.
13:14And for inviting us here to the PTV Sports Network.
