00:00That's the true glory of Christmas, Patrick, giving and caring for others.
00:06Thank you so much to those who have a good heart,
00:09who shared their blessings.
00:12Well, as they say, give love on Christmas Day,
00:15but to those who are with us this morning,
00:17not only during Christmas, they give help and support,
00:20the whole year, they are present for those in need,
00:23and very active in making outreach programs.
00:26And because Team Hiraya PH has received a lot of help,
00:30this morning, let's find out what is the spark that ignited Hiraya,
00:35straight from their founder, Chigail Aragones,
00:37and volunteer, Rachel Ortiz.
00:40Good morning and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:43Good morning.
00:44Chigail, Ellen, of course, we are here with your volunteer.
00:49Thank you for your kindness to other people.
00:52But tell us your story, how did Hiraya start?
00:55It all started with helping others.
01:00Personally, my passion is to help others.
01:04When I went to Jamaica, to the Missionaries of the Poor,
01:08I was with my two best friends.
01:10After that, I felt that this is something that I want to do.
01:16But that was 2017, and that same year, I was diagnosed with autoimmune condition,
01:23which resulted in not being able to walk for more than a year.
01:29So, I thought that this is not for me.
01:33But in 2019, I was able to work in a non-profit organization,
01:40which reignited my passion for helping the poor,
01:43because that is also my work, helping the poor.
01:46So, when I went home, I was okay.
01:49After my knee surgery, I went home.
01:52I planned a small outreach in my hometown, Marinduque.
01:57I was with my elementary batchmates and friends.
02:00After that, they told me,
02:04Chigail, why don't we do this every year?
02:07So, that's where it started.
02:09I am based in Toronto.
02:13So, when I came back to Toronto,
02:15what they told me resonated with me,
02:19so, that's where it all started.
02:22I said, okay, this is something that I wanted to start.
02:26So, Hiraya was formed.
02:28I got the name Hiraya with the help of my friends.
02:34So, it means hopes, dreams, and aspirations,
02:38which is exactly what our team's mission is,
02:42to give hope to those in need.
02:45So, that's how we started.
02:47The name of your group is beautiful.
02:49Hiraya, which means hopes and dreams.
02:52It's inspiring.
02:53So, what kind of outreach programs are you doing,
02:58and how do you choose where you will go?
03:00You, Rachel, as a volunteer,
03:01what do you feel can help others?
03:06I'll start with the programs.
03:08So, when we started last year,
03:11our program was focused on marginalized communities.
03:16So, our first project was in elementary school.
03:20And then, this year, in 2024,
03:23we initiated our advocacy for stray animals.
03:27So, this is how it went.
03:29So, with stray animals,
03:31I talked to Gail,
03:33if it's okay for us to add stray animals.
03:37Because we're so happy that we can help other people,
03:41but there's a part of me that's missing.
03:44It's like, why are we helping them?
03:46What about the stray animals?
03:50So, I talked to her,
03:51if it's okay for us to feed stray animals,
03:54then we'll go to the animal shelter.
03:57So, we chose the animal shelter.
04:00We were looking for someone who doesn't help much.
04:03We're very thankful to the organizations that help a lot.
04:07At least, they help a lot of stray animals.
04:11But we want someone who doesn't help much,
04:14so that we can help them in our own simple ways.
04:18Okay.
04:19So, Rachel, who are the beneficiaries who were helped by HIRAI?
04:22For instance, the stray animals and also the past projects.
04:25So, this year, we started.
04:26So, on December 15,
04:28we went to the animal shelter,
04:30to Wetnose Happy Paws.
04:33They're in Marinas, Capite.
04:35And they don't help much there.
04:38So, we're very happy.
04:41When we got there, the animals were very happy.
04:44And we're also thankful to the owner that we went to.
04:47We chose them.
04:49How do you find them?
04:50Do you follow them?
04:52I searched on Facebook.
04:54I only follow them a little bit.
04:57And every day, they ask for help.
05:00So, no one helps them much.
05:03So, we want to help those who don't have much.
05:07That's why I asked.
05:08Because I also see it when I scroll on Facebook.
05:11There are animal shelters that help stray animals.
05:15But sometimes, they lose their funds.
05:18Yes.
05:19Actually, the owners there,
05:21the people who take care of them,
05:23it's their personal money.
05:26And even the people who take care of them,
05:28sometimes, they don't have their salary anymore.
05:30But I'm very happy from the bottom of my heart.
05:33Because they really helped passionately.
05:36Even if they don't have their salary,
05:38they still do the work.
05:40Alright.
05:41So, Gail, as you said, it's quite a new organization.
05:43I saw on your jacket,
05:45Established 2024, right, Hiraya?
05:48So, how will you make the programs sustainable?
05:52Of course, there needs to be funding.
05:54How do you fund the projects?
05:56Since you mentioned Hiraya,
06:00because one of the sources of our funds
06:05is that we release merch,
06:07like T-shirts.
06:09And because it will be a consistent source of funds,
06:13we also released our own clothing brand for a cause,
06:17which is Hiraya Collection Company.
06:20So, all the products that we sell
06:23will go to all of our projects.
06:26And in terms of funds,
06:29it's really teamwork.
06:31We discuss with the team
06:34what are the good fundraising ideas that we can do.
06:37And then we do it.
06:39Another thing is reaching out to our friends,
06:44families.
06:45And the goal of our team now
06:49is to reach out to small business owners
06:52so that there will be more people to support us.
06:56And consistency in social media posting
07:00is really powerful for our team.
07:03We can reach out to a lot of people.
07:06This year, you were just formed,
07:09but you already helped a lot.
07:12So, what tips can you give to young people
07:14or other professionals
07:16who, like you, want to help others?
07:19For me,
07:23identify your passion.
07:25And if helping the poor
07:27is something that you wanted to do,
07:29pray for it, discern for it,
07:32and then start small.
07:34Start small, but be consistent.
07:37When we started,
07:40we were just a small school
07:42with, I think, 35 students.
07:45So, we grew up.
07:48Before, we could only do one project.
07:51This year, we also helped stray animals.
07:54Before, we only did outreach every December.
07:58But next year, in January,
08:00we're planning another outreach
08:02in our hometown, Barunduque.
08:05So, it's continuous.
08:07The blessings are also continuous.
08:09So, the sharing is also continuous.
08:11Okay. So, Rachel, as a volunteer,
08:13what advice can you give to others
08:16who also want to volunteer in this organization?
08:19How did this organization also change your life
08:23and your view of life?
08:25For me, my life has a purpose.
08:28Before, it was just work and home.
08:32But now, I look forward to every December
08:35when we can all gather
08:37and help other communities,
08:40especially stray animals.
08:43So, when I started,
08:47when I see a stray,
08:49I always have dog food in my car.
08:52So, when I see a stray animal,
08:54I give it to them.
08:56When I first visited an animal shelter,
09:00that's when it started.
09:02There are so many needs.
09:05I'm so thankful to the organizations
09:07that help stray animals
09:09because it's not easy.
09:11It's also very hard.
09:12Dog food is also very expensive.
09:15Do you also have pets?
09:17Yes, I do.
09:18Okay.
09:19What do you raise?
09:21We have sheep.
09:22I also have a lot of sheep.
09:24But during the pandemic.
09:26What kind of pandemic?
09:28Animals are part of the family.
09:31When you see a stray animal
09:33that has no family,
09:35it's better to help them.
09:37So, it's easier.
09:39It's easier.
09:41Share your social media accounts.
09:44For those who are interested,
09:47like Rachel,
09:49she's also a volunteer.
09:51You can see our group on Facebook.

10:08with a good goal and good mission.
10:10And we hope and pray that this organization
10:12will continue to grow.
10:14And may you be a blessing to many people.
10:17And also to other advocates
10:20like helping stray animals.
10:22Thank you very much, Gil and Rachel,
10:24for joining us.
