00:47A Social Weather Station survey reveals fewer Filipinos expect a joyful Christmas in 2024
00:53than in 2023.
00:54In the survey released on Christmas Eve, only about 65% of respondents said they expect
00:59a joyful Christmas this year, lower than last year's 73%.
01:0310% of respondents said it will be sad, which is a four-percentage-point increase from 2023.
01:0926% of them said it will neither be happy nor sad, a five-percentage-point increase
01:14from last year.
01:15Per location, the highest number of Filipinos expecting a Merry Christmas can be found in
01:19Mindanao with 73%, followed by the Visayas with 71%, Balanced Luzon at 59%, and Metro
01:25Manila at 58%.
01:28Asked what they're most grateful for, respondents said they're thankful for good health, their
01:31families, and just being alive.
01:36The United Nations says in 2025, it will only be able to raise enough funds for about 60%
01:41of the 307 million people it predicts will need humanitarian aid.
01:46This as the number of starving people rises globally and the wealthy nation's contributions
01:50decline.
01:52Humanitarian funding mainly comes from the United States, Germany, and the European Commission.
01:56They've provided 58% of the $170 billion recorded by the UN in response to crises since 2020.
02:04In 2024, UN data reveals it only raised about 46% of the $49.6 billion it sought for humanitarian
02:11aid across the globe.
02:13The shortfall forced humanitarian agencies to make agonizing decisions such as slashing
02:17rations and cutting the number of beneficiaries.
02:20The World Food Programme used to feed six million people in Syria, but it cut the number
02:24it hoped to help there to about one million people due to lack of funds.
02:28UN officials see few reasons for optimism at a time of widespread conflict, political
02:33unrest and extreme weather, all factors that stoke famine.
