One week of test driving the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N find out how the performance-driven version of Hyundai's popular crossover SUV handles. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is unlike any other EV you might find on the road with its stylish matte design, customized tuning, and impressive driving performance. There's also a boost mode that lets it go from 0 to 60 mph in under 4 seconds.

00:00I first saw this earlier this year at the New York Auto Show, and now I'm finally able
00:05to check out what the hype is all about.
00:08This is the Hyundai IONIQ 5N.
00:10It's a head-turner like no other.
00:12Whoa.
00:1320-year-old me would be like, oh, that's so cool.
00:21Come on, any day, thank you.
00:27We're driving the Hyundai IONIQ 5N.
00:30It's a subcompact SUV, and it's all about performance.
00:35I know 20-year-old me would love this car, but 40-year-old me, we'll find out.
00:40It's a compact crossover SUV.
00:42There's only one trim.
00:43That's the N, obviously.
00:44It starts at $66,100.
00:47IONIQ 5N has an 84-kilowatt-hour battery, and that gives it a range of 222 miles.
00:53Just for comparison, the Toyota BZ-4X I just test-drove recently has a smaller 74.1-kilowatt-hour
00:59battery.
01:00The 221 miles of range is kind of low, but the trade-off here is all the performance.
01:06It's super low, but it's really fun to do this.
01:11Oh, God.
01:14Okay, it's busy here.
01:22I'm charging up the IONIQ 5, and we start out at 32% level, a toll that's going to take
01:26roughly around 23 minutes to get up to 80%.
01:29I think that short amount of time is a good amount.
01:31In a week, I've been test-driving the IONIQ 5N.
01:34It's getting an efficiency of roughly three miles per kilowatt-hour.
01:38As I always say, three is that sweet spot, because anything less, you're really not getting
01:42the most efficiency out of your battery.
01:45It's right at the cusp, and that could be due to the performance of the electric motor.
01:48You get the trade-off of, yes, the lower efficiency, but at the same time, you get that sporty
01:53and aggressive feel.
01:54So, it's up to you if that's worth your investment.
01:57I want to talk about my experience charging it at home.
01:59I only have level one.
02:00I tried connecting it.
02:02At first, I thought it was going to work, but it didn't.
02:05And I tried a couple different outlets outside.
02:07It still didn't work.
02:08So, I contacted Hyundai, and they told me it could be something with my circuit breaker,
02:11whether it's an appliance or something else connected to that outlet or that line that's
02:15drawing too much power, which is the reason why it wouldn't charge properly.
02:19I had the same issue with the Kia EV9, but I've tried other EVs, like the Kona, and that
02:24one worked perfectly.
02:25When it comes to design, it's striking.
02:28It sets it apart from every other EV out there.
02:31The blue matte paint job, it makes it look clean.
02:33The color stands out.
02:35And it has a nice contrast with everything else around the front and back.
02:39You got the trim accents, like the black and the orange.
02:43Everything about it just makes it look sporty, aggressive, and unique on the road.
02:46Another thing that makes it sporty are the 21-inch wheels.
02:50These are actually bigger than the 20-inch wheels I saw in the BZ4X not too long ago.
02:55And you also have things like the flush handles, which I love.
02:58Also the mirrors, they fold in and out.
03:00Look at the back.
03:02It looks like racing stripes all around, has hard angular lines, nice aggressive look in
03:07the back.
03:08You also have this spoiler here, again, going with the sporty touch.
03:12On the front, you also have the aggressive grille.
03:14You have the projector LED lights, really bright, love them.
03:18And you have all these intakes, flaps, they open up.
03:21They help with the airflow for the battery.
03:24And on the inside, it also continues that theme of sportiness.
03:27So the seats first, they have bucket seating, so you really sit into those seats.
03:31Check out the steering wheel.
03:33It also has a lot of buttons, has its sporty look.
03:35You have the flaps here.
03:36These are usually for the regen brakes, but they also double as the shifters for the electronic
03:41shifting system here.
03:42And you have the buttons, the bright reds, the blues, kind of intimidating, but that's
03:47the appeal about it.
03:51I thought that was cool, but the sounds are all on the inside.
03:54So the roar of the engines, no one else hearing except for me.
03:57Bummer.
03:58This is supersonic, right?
04:06Sounds just like ignition.
04:08Don't notice that much, no?
04:10Classic old NASCAR.
04:14Sport is the key because there's a lot of fun things I haven't seen in other EVs that
04:18the IONIQ 5N does.
04:20For example, the acceleration in pretty much all the modes, even eco mode.
04:25It's tight, responsive.
04:26With that end green boost, sporty mode, it just kicks.
04:30You get that jump right ahead, and it just gives you that intense feeling.
04:34And you see that too in things like the dashboard cluster.
04:36They've changed it up.
04:37It's not your typical clean-looking one.
04:40It kind of emulates the look of a traditional sporty car.
04:42You have the dials here, and as you rev that engine, you see the dial go up.
04:46You get a G-force meter or an accelerometer.
04:50On the inside, the bucket seats makes me feel like I'm sunk into the seat itself.
04:56It kind of matches, of course, the aesthetics, the feel of the car.
04:59You have also the pinstripes around, the stitching.
05:02It gives it that nice racing touch.
05:04I'm actually surprised with the back seats.
05:06It's pretty roomy.
05:07A lot of light room there, and you can also fold down the seats, of course, so you have
05:11more trunk space.
05:12One of the features I'm surprised it does come with is the blindside mirror camera.
05:17So I'm turning, it activates it.
05:19It's a little bit on the tiny side, though, I got to say.
05:21I was expecting it to be a little bit larger, so it can be tough to see what's going on.
05:25Just like other EVs I tested, the smart cruise control is perfect.
05:29You can activate it real quick.
05:31Just press a button.
05:32It'll keep you in the center of the lane, maintain the distance, applies all the necessary
05:36braking and acceleration, and I think it's pretty smooth.
05:39It's not really abrupt with the stopping and going, so it gets the job done.
05:43It's one of those features I've come to love because when you're at stop-and-go traffic,
05:47it actually helps out, and on top of that, you actually get better efficiency when you
05:51use it.
05:52Unfortunately, one of the downsides of the IONIQ 5 event is that it has a very narrow
05:58turning radius.
05:59So when I'm making turns, I got to make sure I got to do them early because it's not as
06:03wide as other EVs I've tested.
06:06Sometimes if I don't do it properly, I could hit the back of the wheel as I'm making that
06:11turn.
06:12Another thing I'm kind of disappointed about here is that it has only manual seats.
06:15All of them.
06:16Not just the front seats, the passenger seats, the driver seats, also manual.
06:21And that's something for this price point I think is not acceptable, and it's also missing
06:25other premium features like the digital rear-view mirror, the heads-up display, and also auto
06:30parking.
06:32Clearly, Hyundai is attracting car enthusiasts with the IONIQ 5N.
06:37Yes, it's one of the best-looking EVs I've come across, but it doesn't hold up to the
06:41value I see in some other EVs I've tested.
06:44If performance and customization is all that you crave, then definitely think about this,
06:48just as long as you can afford it.
06:50What do you guys think?
06:51Let me know in the comments below.
06:52Is it one of the best-looking EVs?
