00:00As Hyundai expands its EV lineup, the IONIQ 6 arrives with fresh, funky flair.
00:13This all-electric sedan shares key fundamentals with Motor Trend's 2023 SUV of the year, the IONIQ 5 Crossover.
00:21However, the IONIQ 6 takes a somewhat unusual design approach that sets it apart from its competitors,
00:27which include the Pulsar 2, BMW i4, and Tesla Model 3.
00:33Having made its debut for 2023, the IONIQ 6 carries over unchanged into 2024.
00:39Start with the excellent Hyundai IONIQ 5, then reshape it into a sedan.
00:45Presto, IONIQ 6.
00:47Hyundai's newest all-electric four-door benefits from many of the same attributes as its crossover counterpart.
00:53But which is the better buy?
00:55In terms of pure EV factors, the pair is tied on their fast charging capabilities.
01:00Both can recharge at up to 239 kilowatts, which Hyundai says can take the battery from 10 to 80 percent in 18 minutes under ideal conditions.
01:10However, the IONIQ 6 finds an advantage in range thanks to its more aerodynamic shape.
01:16It's perhaps slightly more fun to drive thanks to its lower center of gravity, but it won't drop an IONIQ 5 in a drag race.
01:24Both are plenty quick.
01:27Park the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 side by side, however, and a potential preference for the SUV arises.
01:34Clearly, its hatchback-esque form factor is a benefit to passenger and cargo capacity, especially considering the IONIQ 6's small trunk.
01:43We think the retrofuturistic IONIQ 5 looks better than the somewhat disjointed, droopy IONIQ 6.
01:50Even though the IONIQ 6 lacks the aesthetics and practicality of the IONIQ 5, it's still a great EV.
01:58With fast charging, long range, great tech, and enjoyable driving manners, it's already a leader among electric sedans.
