Communities near the Grampians raced to safeguard their homes and gather personal belongings as the season's first fierce bushfires loomed, with extreme danger forecast for Boxing Day.

00:17hectare bushfire, however it is the calm before the storm as conditions are expected to worsen

00:32While the February 13 bushfires are fresh in the minds of firefighters, many are saying
00:37this is more like the 2006 blazes, which unfortunately saw the loss of a life in the Horse Gap region.
00:45Boxing Day travellers have been urged to reconsider their plans as catastrophic conditions are
00:50forecast in Victoria for Thursday and Friday as temperatures reach 40 degrees.
