00:00More than 500 million pesos were spent on smuggled imported rice.

00:04From the Ikinasan Braid of the Bureau of Customs,

00:06TCG and DA visited the different warehouses yesterday.

00:10Denise Osorio reports.

00:16The Bureau of Customs collected thousands of bags of imported rice

00:21which is estimated to be worth less than 500 million pesos.

00:26The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Services or CIIS of the Bureau of Customs,

00:32the Philippine Coast Guard and the Department of Agriculture,

00:35entered and raided the Shamna Warehouse last night

00:38after receiving intelligence reports from the DOC of the smuggled imported rice

00:45and the others are already old.

00:47We don't know what their reasons are.

00:51This was raided last night and they haven't sold it to the public yet.

00:58According to the official, it is possible that the price of the rice was lowered

01:02because of the hoarding from the past years.

01:05That's why thousands of rice were stockpiled by the owners.

01:09The DOC confirmed that if the smuggled rice was checked and inspected,

01:13it is possible that the government will repurpose it

01:15by donating to the Department of Social Welfare and Development or DSWD.

01:20According to our President's directive,

01:23he doesn't want to waste the rice that we smuggled

01:26and if it is fit for human consumption,

01:28he will immediately donate it.

01:31Some warehouses need to be closed and padlocked

01:35because the caretaker or the owner did not open it.

01:38The DOC added that they are not only repurposing the rice,

01:42but also mixing it with local rice

01:46so that it can be sold at a higher retail value as imported.

01:52The rice smuggled from Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Cambodia

01:57is usually imported

01:59because they have a large supply that can be sold for export in the competitive market.

02:05The violation of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act,

02:10the Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Act,

02:14and the new RA 12022 or Anti-Agricultural Economic Sabotage Act

02:20are being faced by the owners of the so-called smuggled rice

02:24if there is no document that can be issued.

02:27And if the value of their smuggled rice exceeds P10 million,

02:32it has no basis.
