00:00Every day's a new beginning, every night a start of something, brand new ways and brand
00:22new days to live a sweet life.
00:29Congratulations!
00:35Tonight we will help you help your teenage kids choose his or her course for college.
00:40And we start off by sharing na maraming na mga non-traditional schools na pwede nang pagpilian.
00:45Isang malaki at magandang pagbabago sa sistema ng edukasyon ang pagkakaroon ngayon ng mga
00:51non-traditional schools with non-traditional courses.
00:54Ano nga ba ang non-traditional school?
00:56For me a non-traditional school is, it's not your regular college.
01:00It's wherein, parang pupunta ka sa isang skwala na alam mo na kung anong gusto mo maging
01:06pagkatapos.
01:07Like with my school, I knew that I wanted to become a chef.
01:10So, yun yun, parang hindi na ako, I didn't have to go through all those subjects na pinagdadaanan
01:16ng lahat ng magpupunta sa mga universities.
01:18Non-trad, in the sense that we don't teach the same way the other colleges or universities
01:24teach.
01:25Ano ang magandang naidudulot ito sa mga estudyante?
01:28Higit pa itong nakakatulong sa pagunlan ng educational system ng bansa?
01:32We focus on applied learning.
01:34Applied learning means that from the theory that's taught in the classroom, the students
01:38are given an opportunity to actually put those theories into practice immediately.
01:43The interaction is very open.
01:45In general, we are a community.
01:47The ratio of the instructor to the student is more or less like six, one is to six.
01:53Kailangan nakakutok talaga.
01:55They help us after.
01:56They help us get employment.
01:58They refer us to different hotels and different restaurants.
02:02And we're also accredited abroad.
02:22Kasi fashion model ka, so dapat ganda ha?
02:26Blue and green.
02:28Inang fashion na pinuno ni Wale.
02:30Parang kang beach umbrella.
02:32Ko naman.
02:33Ano ba yung course mo?
02:46Of course!
02:47Dapat.
03:17Oo, tapos? Anong natapos mo?
03:19Nakatapos naman ako, nang madami.
03:22Oye, hindi. Serious ha? Ay, computer secretarial naman ko.
03:26Wow, ang galing mo.
03:27In how many words ka per minute?
03:28Ay, hindi ko nalang nabilang.
03:30Actually, ngayon-ngayon naman mo computer.
03:33Wag ko nang tanungin kung anong school ka galing, kasi baka walang mag-enroll.
03:36Sandali, ikaw. Anong course mo?
03:38Management sa UP.
03:40Wow, pang mayaman talaga.
03:42Pero hindi yun yung gusto kong course.
03:44Ah, talaga?
03:45Ay, bakit yun ang kinawa mo?
03:46Kasi gusto ko talaga, ano, fine arts.
03:49Pang mayaman din niya. Parang bagay ka dun.
03:51Parang ewan ko ba't ako nabagsak sa management.
03:54Anyway.
03:55So, nagamit mo naman?
03:57Hindi masyado.
03:58Ako din, hindi. So, parang lang tayo. We have something in common.
04:00Hopefully, mas lucky yung guests natin.
04:02Sa aming pagbabalik, let's get to know the perception of teenagers about going to college.
04:07Totooe.
04:17Please welcome on the show, Gabrielle Concepcion, a management student of LaSalle.
04:25Joey Anne Marquez, political science, Ateneo.
04:31And Ina Revilla, fourth year high school, LaSalle-Zobel.
04:36Please welcome to the stage, Gabrielle Concepcion, a management student of LaSalle.
04:42And Ina Revilla, fourth year high school, LaSalle-Zobel.
04:49Hello, children.
04:52Hello, children.
04:53What made you decide to take up the course that you're taking up now?
04:57Well, actually, honestly, even I didn't expect that I would be taking up management.
05:04Because I really wanted to become a doctor.
05:07You wanted to become a doctor?
05:08Yes.
05:09Why did you become a doctor?
05:10And then, parang naisip-isip ko na, it will take me ten years.
05:18Oo nga. But you have all the time. You're young.
05:20Yes, I know. But then, kinausap ako lang family ko.
05:25And parang they said, if I would want to take up medicine, might as well take it up in the States.
05:31In the?
05:32In the States.
05:33In the States. Okay.
05:34Kasi like, most of our doctors here, diba, they go there para lang mag-nurse.
05:38Okay.
05:39So, what's the use? Eh, since we have naman our family business, I just decided to take up management.
05:46Oo nga.
05:47And it's okay naman for me.
05:48Kasi parang it's really a useful course, eh. Kahit sangkap umagsak, diba, management.
05:53What about Joey-Ann? Were you inspired by your dad? Because you're taking up political science.
05:57Actually, when I was younger, I've always been in mga student organizations, student council.
06:05A leader ka talaga?
06:06It's always been my dream to help a lot of people. And since my dad is also in politics,
06:13doon ko nakita na para, oh, sige, baka ito nga.
06:15Parang this was your calling.
06:17Yes.
06:18So, magba politician ka din in?
06:20Sana po.
06:21Wow.
06:22So, that's really your dream, to become a politician, and you're preparing for it as early as now.
06:26Yes. Ever since I was young, that's what I wanted to do with my life, to help other people.
06:32Kasi nga nakita ko po talaga yung ginagawa ng dad ko.
06:36And while watching him, doon ko nakikita na nagiging masaya rin po ako.
06:41Iba yung fulfillment. Let's ask Ina naman. Have you decided on a course?
06:46Well, as of now, I'm considering taking up legal management at Ateneo.
06:53Legal management? Are you also inspired by your dad?
06:57Actually, I don't want to be a politician. I just want to take it up for the sake of it.
07:02Parang wala lang?
07:03Parang wala lang, just to get the feel of it. Kasi baka next year, magma-migrate din ako puntahong Europe or the States.
07:10Magma-migrate ka?
07:11Yeah.
07:12Ah, so you'll study abroad?
07:14I don't know yet.
07:16You're hoping?
07:17Yeah, hoping.
07:18Okay.
07:19Okay Ina, ako may tatanungan ko kay Ina. So mag legal management ka.
07:22Pero ano ba talaga yung dream mong magiging? Or yung course na gusto mo talaga personally?
07:27Personally, actually sinabi rin sa akin ng friend ko before, it doesn't matter what course you took up.
07:35Kasi at the end, as long as you're good at it and as long as you have the passion for it, why not?
07:41Like, I have a friend. Nag-ano siya? Ano yun? Engineering. Tos parang he ended up working for a company or something.
07:53Yeah, it doesn't follow kasi Ina. Pag yun yung course mo, yun rin yung gagawin mo.
07:57So wala kang dream course?
07:59Dream course? When I was a kid, yun, medicine.
08:03What about the choice of school? Kasi sometimes, I know of, like, I have a friend na he studied in Ateneo.
08:12Wala nang ibang school pwede sa anak niyang lalaki. Talagang Ateneo lang.
08:16Meron rin akong friends, Lasal. Hindi talaga pwede ibang school. Dapat Lasal lang.
08:21So, was that a consideration before?
08:26Ako, it's either-
08:28Ika, why did you decide on Lasal?
08:30No, for me-
08:31Did your mom tell you?
08:32Oh, no, no, no, no. It's just me. It's either Ateneo or Lasal.
08:37So how's that? You applied in many schools?
08:40I applied for Lasal, Ateneo, UP. Yeah, for those three schools.
08:47Okay, but when making important decisions like that, do you take into consideration your parents' inputs?
08:54I ask for advice. And every time I go talk to my mom, she would tell me to do whatever I want.
09:00To go to the school that I want to. Kasi siya yung tipong, hindi ako- I won't decide for you.
09:07You decide for yourself. Whatever you want to do. Kasi you'll excel.
09:11She's telling me na, you'll excel more in the things that you want to do.
09:16Are you pressured by your friends? Diba pag high school feeling mo parang umiiyak ka pa? Kasi hindi na kayo magkikita.
09:22So na, you're there to send marami yung mga dati mong classmate, mga kaibigan mo to home again.
09:27Did that ever happen to you? No talaga. Wala.
09:30Ever since I was young, I've always been blue-blooded. Talagang Ateneo all the way.
09:35So it didn't really matter kung yung friends ko- I knew, even when you were young, you knew that you wanted Ateneo.
09:40Yeah, talagang I wanted this, I wanted that. So it was all planned.
09:44So yung friends, almost all of them went to Lasalna. And some stayed in Ateneo.
09:51But it didn't really affect me as much because we-
09:56You've kept the friendship with them? Yes, yes. As in we plan every week to go out.
10:26Um, actually, most of them will go to Taft. Eh, ayoko mag-Taft kasi sobrang parang, parang zobel na rin eh.
10:34Ah, gusto mo ibang ano? I want a new environment.
10:37Kaya ang pinili nga niya states. Ibang-ibang environment do. Sobrang.
10:42Parang gusto mo ako sumama do sa ibang environment na rin.
10:45What's wrong with staying in LaSalle all the way to college?
10:48Um, there's nothing wrong with it. It's just that you wanna try something different.
10:52Yeah, I wanna try something new.
10:54How do your parents feel about the probability of you going to the states?
10:58Um, I don't know. I haven't talked to my dad about it.
11:01Ay, malalaman pala ni Senator Bong kapag nanonat-noodle niya to.
11:05So, huwag kayong pumayag na hindi ako kasama.
11:08Yung mom ko pala yung nasasabihan ko.
11:11Okay naman?
11:12Yeah, she's okay with it.
11:13Why abroad?
11:14Um, mas malaking, mas madami yung opportunities niya. And mas, brighter future, I guess.
11:22Brighter future.
11:24I don't know. Yun yung mindset ko.
11:26For now?
11:27Yeah, for now.
11:28I'm sure magbabago pa rin yan. Ay, mamarami na namang opportunity dito sa Pilipinas.
11:32Oo nga, maraming opportunities. Kaya, vote for me ah.
11:37The candidate.
11:38You, Joey, because I also know of some students na they shift courses in the middle of the school year.
11:45That never happened to you?
11:47No talaga. Ever since I was young, I already told myself that this is who I want to be.
11:52And since my parents really wanted this for me also, kasi I expressed it to them na ito talaga yung gusto ko.
12:00They're always there for me and kahit na yun, may hope pa ang Pilipinas.
12:07Gabby, what about you? Are there times na you wish that you pursued medicine instead of management?
12:14No. I've decided to take up management and I'm sticking to it.
12:23You're seeing it through?
12:24Yeah.
12:25But you don't naman discount the fact that maybe after your management course, you can take up medicine?
12:31I don't know. Kasi after college, I plan to go to the States to study.
12:37But lahat kayo nag-aalisan.
12:39Ano man, sarap-sarap dito sa Pilipinas. Napaka-relax lang.
12:42Pero like for me, pupunta kong States. Pero gusto ko kasi mag-aaral ako doon and then babalik ako, tutulungan ko yung Pilipinas.
12:49That's good naman.
12:51Thank you girls. We will see more of you later.
12:54Meanwhile, ang sabi palagi ng ating mga mami sa atin na even if we're so busy, palagi naman pinapaalala, we have to eat the right food.
13:02So now, habang nagkwantuhan tayo kanina, naaamoy natin na may naguluto na masarap, puntahan natin siya ngayon.
13:09We have with us, sabi nga ni Wilma, ang cute naman ang guest natin ngayon. We have with us Chef Tristan.
13:15Thank you for being here.
13:19What are you preparing? Kasi I assume this is a healthy meal, diba?
13:22This is a healthy meal, Lucy. Kasi it's a combination of you have the protein, you have the carbs, you have the fiber.
13:28And this is best suit for the people who's always on the go, especially mga sajante.
13:32Mga sajante, pwede ito ipack?
13:34Ipak, pagpahuli na lang.
13:36Kahit hindi na mainit, masarap pa rin ito?
13:37Masarap pa rin.
13:38Okay, sige. What did you do?
13:41Okay, first I sautéed or seared the chicken breast strips.
13:44Ang bango, sana maamoy nila lahat. Chicken strips?
13:46Chicken strips, and I use olive oil para healthy. Or you can use canola oil, para medyo cheap ng konti.
13:53So I seared the chicken, and then I set it aside. We just brown the sides lang, para lumabas yung flavor of the manok.
14:00And then I sautéed the garlic, the celery, the carrots, and the onions.
14:05Okay, but you really diced it? Really small?
14:08Yeah, it's been chopped.
14:09What is this?
14:10This is mangoes, so later we'll toss it.
14:13Ah, so medyo matamis-tamis siya?
14:15Medyo matamis-tamis.
14:16Can you also substitute the chicken with seafood?
14:19Pwede pwede. Seafood, pwede rin pork, pwede rin beef if you want.
14:22Pork na walang taba dapat?
14:24They can substitute the rice, if they want, with the brown rice, para mas healthy.
14:30If they're on the diet, or they can substitute the rice din with other starches like potatoes, mashed potatoes.
14:36Pwede din i-toss lang ganun.
14:38So it's very simple, it's very quick, very easy.
14:41Okay.
14:42And then for the fruits, they can add some chopped broccoli, cauliflower, or anything.
14:48Excuse me na nga, hindi ko na to kaya.
14:52Pwede, and then palamigin lang nila before putting it together.
14:56Oo, kasi mapapanis, no?
14:57Mapapanis.
14:58Ay, pinapagpumisan ka. Wait, you need a tissue.
15:01Assuming na na-prepare na lahat ng ingredients the night before, it's diced and chopped already,
15:06how long will it take to toss everything together?
15:08Less than five minutes.
15:09Talaga?
15:10Less than five minutes lang.
15:11And then now, we'll just add lang the fruits.
15:16This is mango.
15:17They can use ripe mangoes.
15:19Green mangoes.
15:20Green mangoes.
15:21Tristan, ba't paano kaya mong ko-usapin?
15:44Masarap ba yan, Tristan?
15:45It looks good.
15:46Siyempre masarap.
15:47Kanina pa kasi nasabi ni Joey ah,
15:49na gusto na daw niyang tikman.
15:51Sino? Ang ulang?
15:52Ang ulang.
15:58Young stars who shuttle between school, work, and celebrity moms
16:01who are hell-bent on sending their kids to college
16:04all these when we return.
16:06All the time.
16:17Young stars who shuttle between school, work, and celebrity moms
16:20who are hell-bent on sending their kids to college
16:22all these when we return.
16:24Please welcome on the show Mrs. Alice Peralejo,
16:26mom of Rika Peralejo.
16:32And Mrs. Wilin Luna, mom of Aileen Luna.
16:39Okay, I understand that your kids, Rika and Aileen,
16:42they're going to start college soon,
16:44or they're going to enroll in a course.
16:45Was it their own decision?
16:51At yun talaga ang sabi niya na gusto niya kunin.
16:54What course will Aileen take?
16:56To resemble?
16:58Mommy, si Rika.
16:59Si Rika will take up creative writing.
17:02Bakit? Why creative writing?
17:05Yun talaga gusto niya,
17:06tsaka talagang pag nabasa mo yung mga sinusulat niya,
17:09she really writes well.
17:11Not many people know that about Rika.
17:13But we all know she knows how to dance,
17:15she can act really well.
17:17And then, kailan niya nasimulan yung creative writing?
17:20One time, nung medyo depressed siya,
17:35sabi, ano, sabi niya,
17:37you know you write very well,
17:38why not try writing as a profession?
17:42So that's what inspired her?
17:44Siguro.
17:46Prior to that, she used to write yung mga...
17:48Ah yes, kahit sa akin,
17:50pagka medyo na-offend niya ako,
17:52susulat yan, sobrang ganda niya sumulat talaga.
17:55Talaga?
17:56Never niyo naman na-try na yung kids nyo
17:59gustong mag-take ng course sa college,
18:01pero yung napili nila,
18:03medyo hindi kayo masyado sang-ayon?
18:06Ako, hindi.
18:08Yun talaga yung gusto niya, tourism.
18:10Yung nanguna, walang subject na math.
18:13Medyo hirap siya sa math.
18:15Masati siya sa English.
18:18So yun yung naging main consideration.
18:20Ano pa yung mga ibang courses na
18:22pinaglaroan niya in her mind?
18:24BS Psycho, atsaka Mascom.
18:27At Mascom?
18:28Ah, mahilig siya talaga.
18:29Yun talaga, hilig niya.
18:30Actually, hindi ko alam na hilig ngayon.
18:33Nung pumasok na lang siya sa pag-aartista,
18:37nung mas bata siya, nung mas kid pa.
18:39Iba rin yung dream niya pa.
18:41Parang lawyer atsaka doctor pa.
18:43See, nag-iiba-iba nga.
18:45How do they haggle with you?
18:47Kung sakaling may mga gusto sila gawin na
18:51hindi nyo gusto?
18:53Or hindi kayo pa-pour?
18:55Kasi marami sa parents diba ngayon na
18:57you have your dreams for your kids
18:59and sometimes you don't know anymore
19:02na you're imposing pala.
19:04You think you want the best for them.
19:06Sila naman feeling nila,
19:08sinasakal mo sila.
19:09How do you deal with that?
19:10Ako in my case, sa anim na anak ko,
19:13wala akong naging problema.
19:14Anim?
19:15Kung ano yung gusto nila,
19:17Si Paula is taking up philosophy.
19:21Wow.
19:22Sabi ko, philosophy na siya ngayon.
19:24Yun ang course niya sa UP.
19:27Yun nga din, slister siya.
19:29Actually, siya nag-inspire kay Rika
19:31bumalik sa school.
19:32How long has she been in school?
19:34Si Paula, she stopped na now?
19:35She stopped sa school,
19:37nag-artista,
19:38and then,
19:39nag-stop siya mag-artista,
19:40nag-school naman siya.
19:41Nag-full-time siya sa school?
19:42Ay, full-time.
19:43So she has how many more years to go
19:45before she...
19:46A year.
19:47One more year?
19:48Yeah, kahagabi nga lang,
19:49sabi niya,
19:50Mama, kinumpute ko yung grades ko,
19:51medyo candidate daw siya
19:52for magna cum laude.
19:53For magna cum laude?
19:54Wow.
19:55Tumantuwa naman ako.
19:57What would you advise
19:58other parents watching us,
19:59na pag confused yung kid
20:01with several options,
20:03what should be the deciding factor?
20:05Siguro dapat, ano,
20:07pag-usapan.
20:08At the end,
20:09kasi yung bata pa rin
20:10dapat yung mag-decide kung ano.
20:12Kasi pag hindi mo
20:14sinunod yung gusto,
20:15baka masayang lang.
20:17Masasayang lang yung time.
20:19Pag hindi mo sinunod
20:20yung gusto niya,
20:21yung bata.
20:22So dapat siya pa rin
20:23yung masusunod at the end.
20:24A question naman posed before
20:26when we were talking backstage
20:28is, paano pag
20:29yung gusto na course ng bata,
20:32hindi masyadong practical?
20:34Like arts.
20:36Pero alam natin
20:38na pag fine arts,
20:40matagal pa bago
20:41you can make a name for yourself.
20:43Usually parents,
20:44they encourage the kids
20:45na take up a practical course
20:47para pagkatapos ng school
20:49you can work right away
20:50in a big firm.
20:51How do you solve that issue
20:53pag sinabi ng anak
20:54na ito talaga yung gusto ko mommy?
20:57Kasi pala yung talaga gusto niya.
20:59I think,
21:00dapat supportahan mo eh.
21:01Otherwise,
21:02hindi siya magiging successful.
21:03Diba?
21:05Okay.
21:06Are you giving the right motivation
21:08to your child
21:09for him to stay in school?
21:10That's next when we return.
21:12Many ways and brand new days to
21:15lead a sweet life.
21:17Every day's a new beginning.
21:19Lead a sweet life.
21:20Every night,
21:21a start of something brand new.
21:23Lead a sweet life.
21:24Every day's a new beginning.
21:26Lead a sweet life.
21:28Every night,
21:29a start of something brand new.
21:31Ayon sa mga pinakahuling surveys,
21:33out of 10 high school graduates,
21:35only 4 continue to pursue
21:36their college education.
21:38Nakakabahala ang nasabing statistika,
21:41isa itong katotohanan
21:42na dapat pagtuunan ng pansin.
21:44Ano-ano nga ba
21:45ang mga pangunahing dahilan
21:47kung bakit maraming estudyante
21:48ang hindi nakakapag-ara sa kolejo?
21:51Wala kasing pera pang paaral sakin.
21:53Mama ko,
21:54lamandera lang.
21:55Papa ko,
21:56carpenter lang.
21:57Sabay lang po,
21:58tumutulong sa gawaing bahay.
22:00Nag-stop ako kasi,
22:01napabarkada ako eh.
22:03Patambay-tambay na lang kami,
22:05pero mag-aaral pa rin ako.
22:07Dapat first year college,
22:08pero di natuloy kasi ano,
22:11Napag-stop ng pag-aaral
22:13sa kadaylanan po ng kakulangan po
22:15sa pangangailangan po,
22:16especially na po sa pera.
22:19Exa-sector po ngayon
22:21para sa darating pong pasukan,
22:23may mayo po po.
22:25When your kid is on the brink
22:27of giving up on his
22:28or her college education,
22:30how do you keep him in school?
22:31Let's ask the mommies.
22:33Pa'no pag nakikita niyo
22:35nahirap, nahirap na yung anak niyo
22:37or biglang nawala ng gana
22:38for whatever reason,
22:39how do you encourage him or her?
22:41Actually si Aileen,
22:43eager talaga siyang makatapos
22:45ng college or ng school niya.
22:47But hypothetically,
22:48kung in the future
22:50makikita mo si Aileen
22:51na parang nawawalan ng gana
22:54or nawawalan ng lakas ng loob,
22:56ano sasabihin mo?
22:58Yung pagod kasi sa trabaho
23:00tapos sa aral,
23:01siguro supportin mo lang doon
23:03na maging comfortable siya
23:06sa bahay,
23:08walang problema.
23:10Parang wala na siyang ibang iniisip
23:12kundi mag-art or mag-trabaho.
23:14Kasi si Aileen,
23:15siya yung tipo ng bata na
23:17hindi siya yung isang bagay
23:19lang yung gagawin.
23:21Hindi naman siya manilig sa gimmick,
23:23so okay lang sa kanya
23:25yung mag-aral at saka work niya.
23:28What about you, Mommy Alice?
23:30Siguro kung gano'n si Aika,
23:31hindi naman siya gano'n,
23:33mag-name din ako sa kanya ng names
23:36na mga successful na tao
23:38at saka ano'ng mga hindi nag-aral
23:41na syempre walang nangyari sa buhay nila.
23:43Pero I think yung ganyang problema
23:45nagiging problema lang ng mga parents
23:47paglalaki na yung pinapag-aral mo.
23:49Because ako, I have a brother
23:50na nagka-college,
23:51nakikita ko nang hihirapan,
23:52talaga third kamay ko.
23:54Meron din namang hindi,
23:55pero most of the time talaga
23:56mga lalaki may problema.
23:58Pero sakali, Mommy,
23:59mangyari yan sa'yo
24:00or what can you say to the other moms
24:02na pag if faced with that decision,
24:04what's the one thing you would tell your child
24:06to encourage him to keep on?
24:08Papakita ko sa kanya
24:09kung ano'ng mangyari sa kanya
24:10pag hindi siya nag-aral.
24:11Oo nga no?
24:12You dangle the future before his eyes.
24:14Oo.
24:15Another problem naman is sometimes
24:17nahihirapan na yung mga anak,
24:19hindi pa nila nasasabi sa mga magulang nila.
24:22So there's double pressure on them.
24:25How can you be transparent to your parents?
24:28There's always an open communication dapat.
24:31Kailangan lahat ng nangyayari sa college life
24:35or sa personal life ng mga children
24:37ay sabihin sa mother or father,
24:40whoever they're more comfortable with.
24:42Because that's what I do,
24:43especially with my kids.
24:44So you don't keep anything from your dad, no?
24:46You tell him?
24:47School stuff, no.
24:49Okay, school stuff, no.
24:50Let's make that clear, Madam Zoe.
24:52Of course, there's a difference
24:53pag si Mommy yung kausap ko
24:54saka si Daddy.
24:55Pero pag sa school,
24:57si Papa po talaga.
24:58Kasi siya po talaga nagsasabi,
25:00kailangan magtapos ka.
25:01Kasi pag hindi ka nagtapos,
25:03ito nga yung mangyayari.
25:04Yes, education's very important.
25:06But are you given incentives
25:08by your parents?
25:12Well, kasi ako
25:15never ako nagka-problem with school.
25:19And my mom and I are very open to each other.
25:22Kung merong times na, let's say,
25:25nahihirapan ako,
25:27my mom's there to help me
25:29kung if ever, let's say,
25:32I do get high grades
25:34or I do better for the next grading,
25:38we go out.
25:39My mom treats me out.
25:40Ah, okay, that's your parang...
25:42Yeah, that's my price, diba?
25:44That's the incentive I get.
25:46What are the real situations
25:47that would make you think of quitting?
25:52Ako, pwede yun.
25:53Yeah, why?
25:55Because college requires
25:57a lot of attention
26:00and focus sa children.
26:02Commitment.
26:03Commitment, of course.
26:04Ako, na-feel ko yun
26:06nung first year ako.
26:07Ah, there was a time na?
26:08There was a time na.
26:09Para, oh my gosh,
26:10bakit ganito?
26:11Bakit mas mahirap?
26:12Because in my high school,
26:14we were only 60 in the batch.
26:1660?
26:1760 people in the batch.
26:18Okay.
26:19So, pagdating sa college,
26:20yun lang yung isang class.
26:21So, yung tapos,
26:24yung dun pa-adjustment,
26:26yung mahirap.
26:27Kasi, diba,
26:28mas mahirap na sa college.
26:29College level na siya.
26:31So, yung first time nakita ko,
26:33yung test ko,
26:35bumagsak ako.
26:36Talaga?
26:37Bumagsak ako.
26:38As in, first ever.
26:39Did that make you
26:42lose faith in yourself?
26:44Of course, I cried.
26:45I really cried.
26:46Kasi, diba, para,
26:47oh no, first test ko to.
26:49Anong sabi ni papa sakit?
26:51What about you, Ina?
26:53There was a time last year,
26:55because I'm the EVP
26:56of my student body.
26:59Dati, high school,
27:01student council.
27:02Ako,
27:04ako yung parang head
27:05nung fair namin.
27:06So, I was really pressured.
27:09Kasi, every time,
27:10yung fair namin,
27:11sobrang bongga
27:12and stuff like that.
27:14And then,
27:15on my part naman,
27:16naikita nila kuya
27:17na sobrang nagkakram ako.
27:18Kasi, sobrang...
27:19Nakikita na ang kuya mo?
27:21Yeah, na nagkakram ako.
27:22Parati kasi yung gano'n,
27:23kram, kram, kram.
27:25And then,
27:26it came to a point
27:27na parang,
27:29kahit hindi ko job,
27:30nagagawa ko na gano'n.
27:32Kasi, sobrang OC.
27:33Maybe you're the type
27:34that works best under pressure.
27:35Yeah, exactly.
27:36May ma, gano'n na talaga eh.
27:37Whatever works for you, diba?
27:38But, what about teachers?
27:40Teachers play a very important role.
27:42They can inspire you
27:43and they can do the opposite.
27:45How do they affect your performance?
27:47My teachers help me a lot.
27:49Especially,
27:50when I was in high school.
27:53Kasi ngayon,
27:54it's different.
27:56It's really different
27:57when you're in college.
27:59Kasi when you're in college,
28:00iba-iba na teachers mo.
28:02Diba?
28:03So, not like
28:04pag nasa high school ka,
28:06your teachers are always there.
28:08They can be your teacher
28:10when you're in third year
28:11and they can be your teacher
28:12ulit pag fourth year.
28:14So, minsan,
28:15meron ka talagang teacher
28:16na nilalapitan.
28:18Do you have one teacher
28:20na nilalapitan mo palagi
28:21regardless of the subject?
28:22Yes, there is.
28:23Okay, just to keep you on track.
28:25In addition to that also,
28:26in college,
28:27kasi you don't get to choose
28:28who your teachers will be
28:29and they get to choose
28:31on how they want to teach you.
28:33Meron mga teachers na,
28:34okay, mag-meet tayo ngayon,
28:36next meeting quiz na
28:38or long test na
28:39or exam na.
28:40Iba-ibang discussion na.
28:41Iba-iba yun.
28:42So, what college teaches,
28:43what college taught me
28:45is to adapt to other people
28:47and their teaching styles.
28:49You have to be flexible.
28:51Oo nga.
28:52What would make you shift courses?
28:55Oo nga.
28:56Tama yung tinapat,
28:57adapt lang ng adapt.
28:58Tinamo pag magkasama tayo,
28:59na-adapt ko na.
29:00Yeah.
29:03What would make you shift courses?
29:08Nothing.
29:09Si Joanne kasi
29:10hindi talaga yung gusto niya.
29:11Parang she's so determined.
29:12I wanna be a politician someday.
29:13So, at this point, nothing?
29:14Siguro ako.
29:16Boyfriend?
29:17No.
29:19Would it make you shift courses
29:21pag sinabi ng boyfriend mo na?
29:23Kasi po, hindi po kasi yung future niya
29:25yung masisira if ever we switch courses.
29:28Kasi I'm very independent talaga
29:32when it comes to what I want.
29:34So, pag boys, wala.
29:35Siguro mom and dad, meron pa.
29:37Okay.
29:38Pero, yun.
29:40Kids, dapat tularan.
29:42Let's ask the moms naman.
29:43Ano yung...
29:45Because, ideally,
29:46we don't want our kids to shift courses.
29:49Diba?
29:50Because we think it's a waste of time,
29:51it's a waste of money,
29:52waste of effort.
29:53But, what would make you understand
29:56why they have to shift?
29:59Ano yung valid reason?
30:01Ako, in Paula's case, meron ganun eh.
30:03Before, she was taking up...
30:05Anak shift siya.
30:06Yun talagang ano niya,
30:07veterinary medicine.
30:09Pero, sa school na pinasukan niya,
30:11may problema sa attitude towards
30:14mga artista.
30:15Ay, pangit nga yung school na yun.
30:17She had a hard time.
30:18That's why.
30:19Nag-transfer siya.
30:20Tama yun.
30:22Actually, hirap na hirap siya noon.
30:24Talaga?
30:25But, she loved her course.
30:26Oo.
30:27Kaya na ngayon.
30:28Except that, they made it very hard.
30:29They made it very difficult for her.
30:30Yeah.
30:31Dahil artista siya, ganun.
30:32Why?
30:33What would they do?
30:36Ang dami.
30:37Ano?
30:38Paparinggan siya?
30:39Yo, ganun.
30:40Tapos...
30:41Kasi si Paula,
30:42yung type na,
30:43pag nakakita siya
30:44ng mamaltrato ng hayo,
30:46kahit nasaan siya,
30:47papansinin talaga niya, eh.
30:48Mmm.
30:49Eh, kuminsan,
30:50napipinta siya,
30:51because of that.
30:52Ah, because she's so passionate
30:53about her activities, eh.
30:54Sobra, sobra passionate siya talaga.
30:56Mami?
30:57Kay Aileen naman,
30:58wala pa.
30:59Sa mga anak,
31:00wala pa.
31:01Kasi si Aileen pa lang.
31:02Kaya, yung course na kukunin niya,
31:06yun na talaga yung decide niya.
31:08Yun na talaga yung gusto niya.
31:09Kasi sa work niya,
31:10as an artist,
31:12tapos,
31:13gusto niya rin
31:14mag-story this,
31:15kaya yun din yung kain niya.
31:16Bagay rin sa kanya.
31:17Yeah, I was gonna say,
31:18kaya bagay rin kain niya.
31:20Should you allow your teen
31:21to work while studying?
31:22We will talk about that
31:23when we return.
31:24Every night I start something
31:26brand new ways
31:27and bring new days to
31:30sweet life
31:31Every day
31:32sweet life
31:33Every day's a new beginning
31:35sweet life
31:37Every night I start something
31:39brand new ways
31:40Most of our celebrated stars today
31:42work their way up
31:43to attain their present status.
31:45Pero alam ba ninyo
31:47na may mga artista rin tayo
31:48na iginapang ang sarili
31:49upang magkapag-aral?
31:51Dahil importante sa kanila
31:52ang edukasyon
31:53habang nag-aaral
31:54ay masikap silang nagtrabaho.
31:56Ilan sa mga kabataang
31:57celebrities ngayon
31:58ay nasa parehong sitwasyon
32:00kung saan ay pinagsasabay nila
32:02ang pag-aartista at pag-aaral.
32:08Alam mo Diche,
32:09kanina tinatanong mo sa akin
32:11na yung tanong mo is
32:12kung yung nag-aaral
32:13then at the same time
32:14nagtatrabaho.
32:15Si Joanne dito,
32:16siya ay working student.
32:18Bakit ka nag-working student?
32:20Para may pandagdag din
32:21pambayad sa admission fee,
32:23pandagdag allowance,
32:24tsaka yung matitira
32:26pambilin ng mga projects
32:27or iba pang kailangan sa school.
32:29So, financially talagang nakakatunog
32:32pag-working student ka?
32:33Let's ask the moms naman
32:34kasi it's never easy
32:35para makita ng isang ina
32:37na nahihirapan yung anak.
32:39Sometimes, yung mga anak nyo naman
32:43they feel na pagbata ka gano'n,
32:45parang kaya mo lahat.
32:47Hindi nila alam na,
32:48yeah, it sounds glamorous
32:49being a working student
32:51but it's really not that easy.
32:53What are the advantages
32:54and disadvantages that you see?
32:58Ako nakita kong disadvantage
33:00yung pagpili ng school,
33:01especially sa high school.
33:03Kung gusto mong pumasok sa isang school
33:05na yun talagang choice mo,
33:07hindi ka pwede
33:08kasi kailangan home study ka,
33:10diba?
33:11Kahit gusto mong gusto mo yun,
33:13sa home study ka mag-aaral
33:15dan gusto mong magtrabaho.
33:17Yun ang isang nakita kong disadvantage.
33:19Tsaka namimiss nila yung high school,
33:21which is the best part, diba?
33:23Oo, totoo yan.
33:24Ikaw, mommy,
33:25sinabi mo kanina na
33:27pag ganyan nga yung sitwasyon
33:29na si Aileen has to work
33:31and study at the same time,
33:33pipiliin mo na lang talaga
33:34na maging comfortable siya
33:35pag nasa bahay
33:36ato wala na siyang ibang isipin
33:37kuni mag-aaral at saka magtrabaho.
33:39How do you plan to do that?
33:43Kasi ano,
33:44basta pag uwi niya sa bahay,
33:46ayos yung kwarto niya.
33:48Hindi na siya bibigyan ng problema.
33:50Hindi, walang masyadong isipin problema sa bahay.
33:52Although,
33:53minsan kasama talaga siya.
33:55Sinasabi ko sa kanya
33:56kung ano mga nangyayari sa bahay.
33:58Pero, hindi naman gano'n kabigat
34:00na sa kanya.
34:02Oo, na mag-worry siya
34:03at makaka-affect sa kailangan niya gawin.
34:05But I think, Lucy,
34:06yung pagiging working student,
34:08case-to-case basis e.
34:09Like sila, mommy naman,
34:10I mean, like these kids,
34:12mga well-off sila.
34:13So, parang,
34:14they will not consider working
34:15and studying at the same time.
34:17No, but you can't say that.
34:18Kasi I have mga Chinese friends.
34:21Ganon yung training pang Chinese, diba?
34:23Pag kami, after school,
34:24naglalaro,
34:25sila nag-aano sa botika nila
34:28or sa hardware nila.
34:29And it's really good training.
34:31Parang, built-in na yung discipline
34:33na ganon pa sila kabata
34:34na aano na nila yung...
34:36Na-try niyo ba yun?
34:37Me, I want to be a barista
34:39in Starbucks.
34:40Wow, you wanna be a what?
34:41A barista.
34:42In Starbucks?
34:43Yeah.
34:44So, Sean,
34:45I wanna be a barista also.
34:47Would your mom consider that?
34:49Or your dad?
34:50I don't think so.
34:51They won't?
34:52Yeah, I don't think so.
34:53Kasi...
34:54Lolo pa lang niya,
34:55magagalit na eh.
34:56They're overprotective.
34:59Are you a fan of Starbucks?
35:01Mmm, yeah.
35:02Really?
35:03What's your favorite drink
35:04by there?
35:05Caramel macchiato.
35:06Iced Starbucks.
35:07So, yun lang ang...
35:08yun lang ang ano,
35:09yun lang gusto mong iserve?
35:10Kahit buong araw kang mag-serve
35:11ng ganon, okay lang siya?
35:12Okay lang, okay lang.
35:13Talaga?
35:14Yeah.
35:15You really like...
35:16Wala nang ibang ano?
35:17That's the only place
35:18you'll consider?
35:19Starbucks?
35:20Abercrombie.
35:21That's the place naman yun.
35:22Si Joey, wala akong anong gusto niya.
35:24Ano?
35:25Magbabento ng diet pills.
35:27Hahahahaha!
35:28Hahahahaha!
35:29Sige pa.
35:30Wala, hindi naka-aimig si Joey.
35:32Gabby, what about you?
35:34Did you consider working for...
35:37yung blue collar job ha?
35:39Yung just for the experience,
35:41so you learn the ropes.
35:42Kasi usually sa ganyan,
35:43you start talaga sa...
35:45low level eh.
35:46Ako, I never.
35:47Never.
35:48Honestly,
35:49hindi siya pumasok sa isip ko.
35:51Kasi, no.
35:52Pero before,
35:53I used to get paid by my mom.
35:56You what?
35:57Get paid by my mom.
35:58Kunyari pag summer.
36:00Get paid to do what?
36:01Minsan sa office niya,
36:03so magfafay lang ako no
36:05magta-type ako for her.
36:07That's why I get paid.
36:08So that was your motivation
36:09because you get extra ano?
36:12She used to tell me,
36:1316 pa lang ako or 16, 17,
36:15she was telling me na,
36:16dapat ngayon pa lang,
36:18marunong ka na.
36:19Kasi ako,
36:20when I was 16, 17,
36:22Alam na niya yun?
36:23Alam niya na yun.
36:24She already worked daw for
36:26my lolo and my lola
36:27and their company.
36:28So, nung lumaki siya,
36:30at least alam niya na.
36:32She knows more or less
36:33how the business goes.
36:35Meron ba kayong classmates
36:37na working students?
36:38Do you know of anyone?
36:40I have a lot of friends.
36:41You have a lot?
36:42Yeah.
36:43What kind of jobs do they have?
36:45Yun nga po,
36:46summer jobs,
36:47sa TGI Fridays.
36:49Yeah, but what if ano,
36:51not a full-time job,
36:53na after school hours?
36:55Wala po masyado.
36:56Ah, wala masyado?
36:57I have blockmates,
36:58call center.
36:59Wow!
37:01Call center?
37:02Yes.
37:03So when they're off from school,
37:04lumalagarin sila call center?
37:05Yes.
37:06I think they get yung shift.
37:10Yung shift na panggabi.
37:12Yung shift, but that's hard.
37:13Which is hard.
37:14Yeah, exactly.
37:15That's what I asked.
37:16Bili ba kayo doon?
37:17How do they cope up with schoolwork?
37:19Puyat daw sila.
37:20Okay, mag-call center ka ba nung magdamag,
37:22tas mag-aral ka ng umagang umaga?
37:24Ano pinulog mo doon?
37:25Ano pa ang tulog?
37:26Kasi sabi nila,
37:27nakapag-aral ka naman daw,
37:28kasi yung calls,
37:30you have to wait, e.
37:32Kailangan maghintay ka
37:33for people to call.
37:35So there's a lot of waiting time in between.
37:37Ano yun?
37:38Nagbabaon sila ng books?
37:40Yeah, they bring books.
37:41Tapos, or minsan kasi may breaks din sila,
37:44two hours, three hours.
37:45So they go to Starbucks,
37:46nagbabasa lang sila doon.
37:47They study there.
37:48So the next day,
37:49they're prepared pa rin
37:50when they go to school.
37:51But how do they deal with the sleep factor?
37:55Sa bagay, mga bata.
37:56They barely get sleep daw.
37:57What?
37:58They barely get sleep.
37:59Siguro sa kanila,
38:00two to three hours is okay na.
38:02But what are the sacrifices
38:03that they need to make
38:04pag working student ka?
38:05Ano yung nakikita nyo?
38:07Aside from the obvious,
38:10which is lack of sleep,
38:12or kulang sa pahinga.
38:14Siguro yung gimmick.
38:16Ay, oo nga no.
38:17Suwerte lang siguro ako
38:19dahil si Aileen
38:20medyo hindi siya mahilig sa gimmick.
38:23But at that age, generally,
38:25naghahanap pa yun ng gimmick.
38:28Pero siya hindi naman,
38:29so okay lang.
38:32Mami, may nakikita ka bang?
38:34Si Rika, nung pinagsabay niya
38:35ng school tsaka pag artista,
38:37na-hospital siya actually.
38:38Na ano?
38:39Na-hospital siya.
38:40Sa sobrang pagod?
38:41Kasi uuwi siya ng 4 a.m. from taping,
38:446 a.m. naliligo na siya for school.
38:46Oh gosh.
38:47So, na-demonia siya actually.
38:49How long siya na?
38:51More than a week siya.
38:52So, sabi ng papa niya,
38:53you have to choose.
38:54It's either school
38:55o yung pag artista.
38:57So, ngayon hindi yan,
38:58hindi yan option ni Rika ngayon?
39:00Ah, talagang gusto niya
39:01mag-aaral niyan.
39:02So, even if a good offer
39:04comes along,
39:05she will not consider it?
39:06Yes.
39:07Priority niya, school talaga.
39:08How long ba is her course?
39:10Four.
39:11Four years?
39:12Wow.
39:13So, parang you're saying
39:14na for four years,
39:15she'll say goodbye to showbiz?
39:17Not really goodbye,
39:18pero kung ano lang papasok
39:19sa schedule niya.
39:20Ah, basta ang priority niya?
39:21Yes.
39:22It's the school.
39:23Yun ang sinabi niya,
39:24if ever magkakaroon ng problema,
39:25it has to be the school first.
39:28Okay.
39:29Thank you for being with us,
39:30Mommy Alice,
39:31Mommy Wilin,
39:32Gabby,

41:26Yung dalawa ko ng anak,
41:27nagtutulog din ang karito,

41:36Basta nagtulong-tulong kami.
41:38Dugo, pawis at luha
41:40ang naging puhunan niya
41:41na mami liit at nanay Goyang.
41:43At ang tanging inspirasyon nila
41:45ay ang pangarap na makita
41:46ang mga anak na nakasuod ng toga
41:49at tumanggap ng diploma.
41:51Yung hanggapot kong anak,
41:52accountant d'yon,

42:26Makapang siguro ako.
42:28Hindi ako natakot kahit ano.
42:31Kahit nag-iisa ako.

42:35kanya-kanya na silang pamilya.
42:38Tawa naman ng Diyos,
42:39nakapag-asawa niya
42:40yung mga pagsipag-aral.
