00:00Hello, and thank you to Variety, the Radiant Foundation, and Brooke for bringing us all here together tonight,
00:07in part to honor the film Bob Marley, One Love, and as we said on set, bless up.
00:13In Kingston, Jamaica, Bob Marley lived at 56 Hope Road.
00:18It was at Hope Road where he made his music and raised his family.
00:21It was at Hope Road that he fed the poor and ministered to the oppressed with his message of compassion and love.
00:28It was at Hope Road on December 3rd, 1976, that men armed with machine guns tried to assassinate Bob Marley and silence his message.
00:38In the film, in the aftermath of this violence, Bob seeks out his teacher, Mortimer Plano, and asks,
00:44I can't believe my own people would try to kill me.
00:47Did Jah make that happen?
00:50And Plano tells him that is not the right question.
00:53It's not why did they try to kill you, but why could they not succeed?
00:58Rastafari, I know there is a purpose and a reason for everything.
01:01So what are you going to do with the chance Jah gave you?
01:06And that is a question that many of us in this room who have a platform have to ask of ourselves.
01:10What are you going to do with the chance Jah gave you?
01:15So when Ziggy Marley entrusted us at Paramount with the privilege of bringing his father's life to the screen,
01:21we looked at it as more than an opportunity to tell the story of a man and his music.
01:25It was a chance to tell the story of his message.
01:29A message of love and hope that is as important today as it has ever been.
01:34And hopefully, with the chance that Jah gave us, we were able to honor Bob by helping his message reach a new generation of fans around the world.
01:42Here's a quick look at Bob Marley, One Love.
01:46People know Bob Marley's music everywhere, all around the world.
01:54But Bob was more than just a musician.
01:59This movie brings to the world a Bob Marley that not a lot of people know.
02:03From the day I was born, I never knew so much struggle.
02:09We tell the story of Bob's life.
02:12His music.
02:17And his connection with the people.
02:21It was a tremendous honor to help share Bob's story.
02:24To have the backing of the family, it was really a blessing.
02:29All the family is glad to be part of this.
02:32We tell different sides of Bob.
02:35Everybody here knows the culture, knows the vibe.
02:38Everybody here knows the culture, knows the vibe.
02:40It's a very communal endeavor.
02:43One love, one heart, one destiny.
02:47My father was a messenger of peace and love.
02:52Reggae is people music.
02:53People coming together.
02:55At that time, Jamaica was a war zone between two political sides.
03:00And so Bob's message became the answer to violence and strife.
03:05You can't separate the music and the message.
03:08And what is the message?
03:10Peace.
03:12Right now, the world really needs a love that's in the music.
03:16Bob is such a unifying figure.
03:19And he's creating a revolution of love.
03:22Reggae music comes to unify the people.
03:29When we auditioned and I saw Kingsley,
03:31When we auditioned and I saw Kingsley,
03:33he was just in a different level.
03:35He represents my father very well.
03:37And it was not just about the legend or about the artist or about the singer,
03:41but the human side of him, the emotional side.
03:44My life is not important to me.
03:46My life is for people.
03:48The process of trying to get to know Bob
03:50and trying to convey the magnetism of his charisma,
03:53it's been life-changing for sure.
03:55No guns can stop this message.
03:58I want the world to change.
04:00And that time is now.
04:11So now it's my honor, my extreme honor,
04:15to invite Ziggy Marley, producer of the film,
04:17the heart and soul of the production,
04:19and the steward of his father's legacy and message,
04:22onto the stage to accept the Variety Faith in Spirituality
04:25and Entertainment Visionary Award
04:27on behalf of Bob Marley.
04:28One love.
04:42Yeah, blessings, blessings.
04:44It's a blessing to be here, you know.
04:46It's good.
04:47It's good to be here with people of faith and spirituality.
04:54You know, the first time I saw my faith depicted in a Hollywood movie,
04:59it was a Steven Seagal movie.
05:03I didn't like it.
05:05I did not like what I saw.
05:07I was like, that's not us.
05:08That's not me.
05:09That's not who we are.
05:11These guys were crazy.
05:12The wigs were weird.
05:15They were doing voodoo and they were gangsters and shooting.
05:19I said, that's not who we are.
05:21I really didn't like it,
05:22and so I really appreciate the work that the Coalition has done and is doing.
05:27Coming from my perspective, it's really important, you know.
05:31So, yeah, I mean, listen.
05:33I'm here on behalf of the film.
05:35It took a community to make this film.
05:37We worked together.
05:38And the film, really, if you check the film,
05:42it's really a movie about spirituality and faith.
05:46Because that was the most important thing to my father.
05:48And it was the most important thing to get in this film,
05:52his spirituality and faith and the culture of Rust.
05:55And to represent that the right way.
05:57Because I was so, what do you call it?
06:00What do you call it?
06:01The PTSD, is that the name?
06:03From what I saw in that Steven Seagal movie, I was like,
06:06if I'm in this, we have to get it right.
06:08We have to show and represent who we are the right way.
06:12And so that was most important.
06:14And I'm so happy that we had good partners.
06:17Paramount, you know, Mike, the whole crew.
06:20We were on the same page.
06:22Because there's no way we could do a Bob Marley film
06:24and try and make it Hollywood.
06:27We have to keep it real and represent him properly.
06:29That's the only way it will be a success.
06:32And so I'm very happy, very humbled for this award
06:37for the film and everyone that worked on it.
06:39And we're just looking forward that we can go forward
06:42and do more and express more spirituality, love,
06:46and send a message in what we do as artists.
06:50And not just think of art as something that,
06:53just an entertainment thing or something that is just for the money.
06:57Because whenever we go into this, we're just with a money thing.
07:00It's about getting the message right
07:02and making the movie also be a message, too.
07:05And so, you know, we really appreciate this.
07:07Thank you so much. Love and honor.
