00:00Now, on the left and right, a group is reminding us not to waste rice, especially millions of bags of rice that are wasted in our country every year.
00:14The Agriculture Department is urging everyone to allocate half rice serving.
00:22Bernadette Reyes is on the phone.
00:24You can really make your food delicious if you have only rice in the restaurant or karenderia.
00:33But sometimes, the ending is just a waste of unfinished rice.
00:37In this restaurant, a plastic full of rice is wasted every day.
00:42In every day, we have half rice or sometimes one full.
00:51In one study, it was found that more or less 6.5 grams of rice is wasted by a Filipino every day.
00:59Even though it's just more than a spoon, if combined, it will reach 255,000 metric tons of rice per year or equivalent to more than 5 million bags.
01:10So if we combine it with all the population during that year, it can feed 2.79 million Filipinos for a year.
01:18Nanay Rosy feels bad when she sees leftover rice.
01:23I don't like it. I get angry if it's not finished. I told her to eat what she can finish.
01:29To avoid food wastage, the Department of Agriculture is supporting the program to have half rice serving in restaurants and karenderia like this.
01:39I really want to revive, for the record, I want the Secretary to revive the bill that offers half rice.
01:46For example, the 255,000 metric tons at Php 43 per kilo, that will translate to about Php 3.6 billion worth of rice annually.
02:01So that's a big fund.
02:03As of now, according to PhilRice, there are 47 local ordinances for the sale of half rice in restaurants.
02:10But the company's target is to make it nationwide, even to the government agencies first,
02:15before there is an executive order to promote the sale of half rice to restaurants across the country.
02:21It's in the favor of those who are talking about rice vendors.
02:24It's just right for your taste. It's not too much.
02:27Most of the restaurants, you really leave a lot of rice. It's a waste. The food will be thrown away.
02:31But while there is no EO, PhilRice's advice, especially now that the preparations and reunions are left and right,
02:38let's not be greedy and let's just get a little bit.
02:42While there is a waste of food, consumers are still attacking the high price of half rice,
02:48even though 38,000 metric tons of fish were allowed to be caught.
02:52Its kilo is now up to Php 300, according to the monitoring of the Agri Department in some markets.
02:58The prohibition of fishing is affected because of the recent typhoons.
03:03Definitely, there was a reduction in the volume of catch.
03:07Plus, many were damaged.
03:09The reported damage to the fisheries is almost more than Php 2 billion.
03:14The closed fishing season has been added.
03:17But the benefit of this is what we call availability,
03:23that there is no shortage of supply in our markets.
03:27For GMA Integrated News, Bernadette Reyes, Nakatuto, 24 Hours.
