00:00No gift is sweeter and more precious than to be free, and by next month, the Bureau
00:04of Corrections is poised to set some 5,000 to 6,000 PDLs free for having earned it under
00:10the Good Conduct Time Allowance Program.
00:13Luisa Errizpe has more.
00:18Just in time for the holiday season, the government is setting up for an early Christmas gift
00:23to thousands of convicts serving time, otherwise known as persons deprived of liberty.
00:28And this gift is not just worth any cash amount or in-kind service or Christmas present,
00:34but the joy of having a second or another chance toward freedom.
00:38According to the Bureau of Corrections, about 5,000 to 6,000 PDLs are expected to be walked
00:43away free next month.
00:45This is due to the approval of the Good Conduct in Time Allowance, or GCTA, for those convicted
00:51of heinous crimes.
00:53According to Bucor, included in this program are those who have fully served their sentences,
01:11the terminally ill, or the elderly.
01:14Due to this program, the Bucor sees a lower congestion rate, down to 200 percent, which
01:20was previously scored 350 percent.
01:42Meanwhile today, even before December started, the Bucor released more or less 600 PDLs.
01:49These are PDLs who have fully served their sentences or granted parole.
01:53According to the Bucor, since the administration of Ferdinand R. Margas, Jr. has started, there
01:58are about 17,000 to 18,000 PDLs who were released nationwide.
02:03Luisa Erispe, from The National TV, for a new and better Philippines.
