00:09to elect a new Speaker of the House after failing for nearly four days straight.

00:18On the fourth day of voting, Republican Rep Kevin McCarthy seemed to make progress.
00:2214 previous detractors flipped their vote in favor of the Congressman during the 12th ballot,
00:27leaving him only three votes short of victory for the round.
00:3020 Republicans have voted against McCarthy to support a different member of the party.
00:3312 are election deniers, 19 are associated with one of the farthest right groups in the House,
00:38and 17 were endorsed by Donald Trump in 2022.
00:41These ultra-conservatives believe the Speaker should have less power
00:44and want to elect a leader that is more aligned with their far-right ideologies.
00:48Until a Speaker is elected, however, business in the House will not continue,
00:52no matter how long it takes.
00:53Back in 1856, it took lawmakers 133 rounds to make a decision on its Speaker.
