00:00Dozens of AI industry leaders and academics have warned that artificial intelligence could lead to the extinction of humanity.
00:06A statement published on the Center for AI Safety website says that mitigating the risk of extinction from AI
00:11should be a global priority alongside other societal scale risks, such as pandemics and nuclear war.
00:17According to the website, examples of disaster scenarios include, but are not limited to,
00:21AI being weaponized by drug discovery tools that are used to build chemical weapons,
00:26AI-generated misinformation undermining societal decision-making,
00:29AI becoming concentrated to just a select few,
00:32and AI leading to overall dependency, similar to the scenario portrayed in WALL-E.
00:36People in support of the call include OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and the so-called godfather of AI Jeffrey Hinton,
00:43as well as executives from Google DeepMind and Anthropic.
00:46Even though AI experts say the technology is still a long way from the stuff of science fiction,
00:52the rapid investment into the AI industry calls for regulation before any major mishaps occur.
