00:00The government must develop a long-term plan to address a critical shortage of nurses,
00:06says the International Council of Nurses.
00:08The council's CEO, Howard Catton, said Malaysia's shortage has been exacerbated by high-income
00:14nations hiring nurses from Asia with better pay and working conditions.
00:19Catton said a decade-long plan is needed with a focus on better wages, working conditions,
00:24safety and career prospects in order to attract and retain talent.
00:29We're hearing countries who are increasing their supply of nurses, but the demand is
00:36growing faster than the supply, so the gap is getting wider.
00:41It takes three years to educate a nurse, other healthcare professionals.
00:45So have a plan, have a long-term plan, identify the funding for it as well.
00:51It needs to be fully, it needs to be fully funded.
00:54Catton said the plan should aim to bring nurses' salaries, currently ranging from
00:58RM2,600 to RM3,800 in public hospitals, closer to the national average monthly salary of
01:05RM6,610.
01:08He also called for greater investment in the nursing profession and in health workers.
01:13Poor care where there is harm done to people in countries is estimated to cost countries
01:22as much as 10% of GDP when you don't deliver great care.
01:28When you do invest in healthcare, you keep people healthy, you keep them working, you
01:33keep them engaged in society.
01:35So you also, the evidence shows, there's an economic boost through investing in healthcare.
