00:06Violence erupted across the country after three young girls were killed in a knife attack at a
00:10children's dance event in Southport. After false reports began to proliferate online,
00:14rioting originally broke out in Southport on July 30th. More than 50 officers were injured
00:19in the night of violence, which was followed by further rioting in Liverpool and multiple
00:23locations across the country. In the days following, hundreds of people were involved
00:26in acts of violence, targeting property entirely unrelated to the event.
00:30As a way of supporting the communities impacted by the violent disorder, officials asked
00:34individuals and businesses to claim compensation under the Riot Compensation Act.
00:40According to the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners, a total of 88 compensation claims
00:45have been received by eight police and crime commissioners totalling more than £1.9 million.
00:50The financial claims in Merseyside are more than double the cost of any other place in the country
00:55and currently amount to almost £800,000.
