00:00If you had 30 seconds with Kyle Shanahan, what would you say to him? Shane in the city. Hi, Shane. Thanks for calling.
00:06Hey, what's up, guys? All right, 30 seconds with Kyle.
00:10As my two-year-old daughter would say, tie me. Ready, set, go.
00:16More dynamic, more creative.
00:19Stop handing the ball off to Debo Samuel.
00:22CMC looks slow because he has like one Achilles tendon between
00:28the two of them. Debo looks a little slow.
00:31Give Jordan Mason the ball. He's explosive. He's dynamic.
00:36He's fun to watch. My two-year-old daughter is a big Jordan Mason fan.
00:40I love watching him play.
00:44I've never been a big fire Kyle guy or anything like that.
00:49Where's the dynamic creativity?
00:52I watched Kyle blow the Super Bowl in Atlanta.
00:56I was a Patriots fan back then, or I still am, but I'm a Niners fan now.
01:00Shout out, Janice, my wife, San Francisco.
01:06Give Jordan Mason the ball, man. Come on.
01:08I'm saying you're a good family man. In a one-minute call, you referenced your wife
01:12and your two-year-old daughter twice.
01:14Impressive.
01:14So yeah, good on you.
01:17The Jordan Mason love is really fascinating today.
01:22I get it. He did some great things this year with his opportunity,
01:26and he got people going and everything.
01:29But when Christian was not quite back yet, and maybe he was hurt,
01:34he sort of looked like he was running out of gas.
01:36Plus, let's not forget, we've been screaming and yelling about red zone issues all year long,
01:43and Jordan was a big, I would argue, part of the problem.
01:47Oh yeah, he was on the field.
01:48He was on the field. He was unable to do between the 20s, inside the 20s.
01:55And he had multiple turnovers in the red zone this year.
02:00Big fumble, yeah.
02:01Yeah, so I'm not against Jordan getting more time.
02:05I am against anybody who says Jordan Mason should kind of go back to some sort of a lead role.
02:11I think it should be more than three snaps or whatever he got.
02:16Yeah, two.
02:16But I'm still all in favor of Christian McCaffrey
02:19getting north of 15 touches in every football game.
02:22Sure.
02:22I want to make that clear.
02:23No, and I'm with you on that. I want to be clear about that.
02:25But if you look at any game, and let's just look at this past game
02:29against Seattle, and you want to talk about touches,
02:32where Brock Purdy completed 21 passes, and you had 27 rushes.
02:38So that's 48 touches.
02:41And take out Brock Purdy's five carries.
02:43So now you're down to 43 touches, where 21 times somebody caught the ball,
02:49and then 22 times somebody ran the ball.
02:52And of that 43 or so touches that you had, McCaffrey had 23 of them.
02:58So he had more than half of the overall touches.
03:01Can he get 20 of those?
03:03And Mason can get 7 to 10 instead of just 2?
03:06And I do agree with the caller about Debo running the ball.
03:10And Grandy had the great quote in the stat in the thread.
03:13He's one of three running backs or ball carriers
03:16to have more than 25 carries and less than three yards of carry.
03:20Stop running the ball to Debo Samuel.
03:22It's not working.
03:23He's either slow or it's been solved.
03:25Whatever it is, knock it off.
03:27Yeah, well, I mean, listen, I don't think you just abandon it for the rest of your life.
03:32It's been a great repping for you.
03:34But it does seem like you'd be silly at this point to not start trying some other things.
03:38When things aren't working, you've got to try something else.
03:40And right now, it's not working.
03:42And you've reached the time.
03:43You've reached try something else time because you can't have it not work again
03:47going into this weekend against Green Bay.
03:49All right, we'll keep going with the calls.
03:50But I promised you this.
03:52Pat McAfee show.
03:53The subject came up today with regard to the way social media and 49er fans
04:01are reacting right now to Kyle Shanahan.
04:04So listen to what this group had to say about that.
04:08I'm seeing a lot of Shanahan slander now.
04:10A lot of which I didn't figure out his offense slander.
04:13Really?
04:14People are not happy.
04:15Slow down.
04:16There's no good head coaches, dude.
04:18Like Niners fans do this every year.
04:20I don't think you know how good you have it with Shanahan.
04:23Well, I mean, I guess that's a good point, because if your team doesn't win,
04:27we need to blame somebody.
04:29And the head coach is, we assume, in charge of strategy and over there,
04:33play call, offense, idea, roster construction.
04:37You know, it's a lot over there with Shanahan on board.
04:39So if they don't win, I guess it does fall at his feet and John Lynch as well.
04:43Yeah.
04:43Now, that part at the end, I don't think anybody disagrees with.
04:47That's sort of how it works.
04:48And that's why I've said this week what I've said, which is I don't think anything
04:52that happened this year robs Kyle Shanahan of being a great coach.
04:55He's a great coach who's not having a great year.
04:58He's having a rough year.
05:00So you can put a lot at his feet this year, but I don't let that take away all of the
05:05other stuff.
05:05And what do you think about the statement that was made in there by one of the hosts
05:10on the show?
05:1049er fans don't know how good they've got it.
05:14Well, you start to take anything for granted.
05:16And the old Joni Mitchell line, you don't know what you got till it's gone, I think,
05:21is pertinent here.
05:22And 49er fans need to take a step back and remember exactly where you were before with
05:28Chip Kelly and Jim Tomsula.
05:30And Chip Kelly was brought in where he was going to be the flavor of the month, and they
05:35went two and 14.
05:36And the record was better than they actually were.
05:40That team was absolutely terrible.
05:42Bad roster, bad culture, bad everything.
05:45So I do have an appreciation.
05:47Doesn't mean you're not allowed to be critical.
05:49Of course not.
05:50Of course not.
05:51I was chuckling because when you said that song line, I'm pretty sure Grandy started
05:54singing it.
05:55You started bobbing your head in there.
05:56Pave paradise and put up a parking lot.
05:59Yeah, exactly.
06:00Yeah.
06:00He's an old soul.
06:01Don't always seem to go and you don't know what you got till it's gone.
06:04Yeah, exactly.
06:06Good job, Grandy.
06:08And you paved paradise and put up a parking lot.
06:10And in this analogy, it would be you fire Kyle and your parking lot is fill in the blank
06:15coach who's not as good as Kyle.
06:16Oh, Ben Johnson.
06:18Ben Johnson.
06:20Because he is a can't miss coaching prospect.
06:25He's an offensive genius.
06:26You know, just like Brian Dayball was two seconds ago before he went to the New York
06:32Giants and got a big bag of crap in his hand in the name of a $40 million quarterback who's
06:39worth 10.
06:39Tommy DeVito gets the start this weekend.
06:42Tommy!
06:43And he's also an offensive coordinator who blew a big lead in a big playoff game.
06:48Am I right?
06:48Yeah, that's what I remember.
06:5115 seconds.
06:51Right in the coordinator.
06:53That's right.
06:54Somebody earlier was talking about, where's the Dan Quinn hate?
06:57Might have been Evan.
06:59It was Evan.
06:59And he's so right.
07:01I also want to say this every time somebody calls in with 28 to 3, it was not 28 to 3
07:07when they got the ball back.
07:08It was 28 to 9.
07:10Of course.
07:10So if you want to blame Kyle for a blown lead, if that's how you roll, be fair.
07:16Because when they got the rock back, it was 28 to 9.
07:19So the lead that he blew was 28 to 9.
07:21It's fair.
07:23I hate it when people, I'm actually bummed that Evan brought up Dan Quinn today, because
07:27my favorite thing to do is when people blame Kyle Shanahan for that Super Bowl loss, I
07:33ask them, who was the head coach in that game?
07:36They don't even know.
07:37No.
07:37Nobody even knows who the head coach is.
07:40And Kyle gets blamed here.
07:41And I wonder if Dan Quinn in Washington, when they have a bad game, if their callers are
07:46like, oh, well, he blew that 28 to 3 lead in the Super Bowl.
07:50I don't blame Kyle for the two Super Bowl losses here in San Francisco.
07:54I blame Mike McDaniel.
07:57Was he even on the staff for either of those?
07:59I'm looking for somebody else who was Kyle's assistant on those two losses to the Chiefs.
08:05That idiot.
08:06D'Amico Ryans for not teaching Nick Bosa to avoid being held.
08:10Right.
08:11But that's defense.
08:12That's defense.
08:13Actually, I guess it works.
08:14Yeah.
08:15Let's go to the other side of the ball.
08:16Sure.
08:16Okay.
08:17So there you go, Steve Wilkes fans.
08:20Your fault.
08:22Just because.
08:22I can honestly say I should be blamed for this.
08:25Very good.
08:26Yeah.
08:26All right.
08:27Let's go to Julie in Concord.
08:29Grady's squinting, trying to find it.
08:32You're getting old, Grady.
08:33Come on.
08:34Yeah, you need readers?
08:35I got readers in here, man.
08:3728.
08:37You want some readers?
08:38Go to Julie.
08:39Oh, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
08:40I can honestly say I'm sort of built for this.
08:42All right.
08:42There we go.
08:43All right, Julie.
08:44Julie, what's going on?
08:45Well, so I think that Kyle Shanahan is partially to blame because he's getting repetitive in
08:55his calls.
08:56And so the opposing team can see what the next call is going to be.
09:02So they already have who they're going after.
09:05We were using Ricky Pearsall as a great catcher.
09:10And then all of a sudden, last game, he was where to be found.
09:15So Kyle was going, you know, McCaffrey, McCaffrey, maybe McCaffrey.
09:21So he needs to go back to Mason, McCaffrey, Pearsall, McCaffrey, whatever.
09:27Mix it up.
09:28Don't let the other team see every single play you're going to be going with.
09:33But also, some of them were reacting so slow that you could see exactly where Brock was
09:41going to be throwing the ball.
09:43Well, Julie, thank you very much.
09:44The only thing I would say on that, for me, that sort of breakdown is a little bit too
09:51focused on rearview mirror looking.
09:55In other words, I don't think the ball always goes to who they drew it up to go to.
10:00You know what I mean?
10:01Like I know we joke that Kyle Shanahan's got like a joystick in his hands.
10:06That's not actually what's happening.
10:08You know, like just because the ball got thrown to Juwan doesn't mean it was supposed to go
10:12to Juwan or whatever.
10:13On pass plays, especially Brock this year with all the running around he's done, you
10:18drop back and then who knows what the hell's going to happen.
10:21And part of that is not okay because the offensive line has not had a great year.
10:27And there is too many hot routes and running around and freaking out and ad-libbing and
10:32all of this stuff.
10:32I'd like to see a lot less of that.
10:35The concept of what you all are saying, I agree with.
10:38I would love to see more sort of in the way of a substitution pattern where guys are coming
10:45in fresh.
10:46You're keeping people on their toes.
10:48You know who you all should watch and we're going to get a look at it here in a week and
10:51a half.
10:51Watch the way Buffalo moves their people in and out.
10:55Take it from someone who's got a couple of those players on their fantasy team.
10:59It's actually frustrating.
11:00Like why is James Cook, who's having an amazing year, not in there?
11:05Why is he not in there?
11:06Well, it's third down.
11:08Now it's first down.
11:09Who is Ty Williams?
11:10Why is Ray Davis playing?
11:12Why did you trade for Omari Cooper and he's sitting on the sideline watching Khalil Shakir
11:17and Mac Hollins run routes?
11:20But that's the way Buffalo does it because they go, hey, we got Josh Allen in and out,
11:25in and out, in and out.
11:26Keep the defense guessing.
11:28Keep them on the toes.
11:29I think that a little bit of that could get blended into what Kyle's doing.
11:33That when Kyle's in his bag, as we like to say, that's what he does when it's normally
11:37a you can Debo and George Kittle and it's McCaffrey and use check.
11:41Well, then you can do so many different things with your huddle.
11:44So when you break the huddle, the defense doesn't know what you're doing and where you're
11:48going in this past game against Seattle.
11:50When you've got Saubert in the huddle, you're thinking either he's going to pass block or
11:56run block or we can ignore him.
11:58McCaffrey's probably getting the ball.
12:00If Debo goes in motion, they're going to hand it to him.
12:02So let's cover Ricky.
12:04Let's ignore Eric.
12:05Use check's not going very far.
12:07So we can kind of keep a half an eye on him.
12:10Next thing you know, you can key on Christian and you can worry about Debo a little bit.
12:14And then Juwan was able to get free and have a big game.
12:16But if you don't have your five best eligibles, put one of your better skill guys out there,
12:21at least more than two snaps.
12:23I do wish we can go back three weeks and have this conversation again.
12:29I wonder if you've changed your opinion.
12:31I bet you haven't.
12:33But looking at the way the offense since the bye looks now, do you wish that they had gotten
12:38a receiver at the trade deadline?
12:40Uh, well, if I would have known that George Kittle was going to get hurt.
12:44Yeah, that's a fair point.
12:46And I mean, that's only one of the games, though.
12:48Honestly, my answer would, it should be yes, but it's still going to be no because I, well,
12:54I look at what they have and even against Seattle and I was running through the snap
12:58counts and use check snaps were down, which told me that you were playing with a lot of
13:03three receiver sets and it was Juwan and it was Ricky Pearsall and it was Debo.
13:08So are those three good enough to, like, be good enough as a three receiver set?
13:15They should be.
13:16They should be.
13:16I don't want to stunt the growth of Ricky Pearsall.
13:19I want him on the field.
13:20But at the same time, if you're going to, if it's going to look like that, where he only
13:24gets two targets in an entire game, 37 snaps, I, you know, if you're going to do that, then
13:30yeah, Deontay Johnson or Mike Williams would have looked real, real nice.
13:34Yeah, real nice.
13:35Debo with 55 snaps and he had seven targets and four catches.
13:40Juwan Jennings played 95% of the snaps and he got the lion's share of it.
13:44That's the guy.
13:44Beyond that, McCaffrey played 59 of 63 snaps.
13:48You had two Mason and two Guerrendo.
13:50Those were, hey, Christian, you want a sip of water?
13:53And so he runs off the field for a minute, gets two gulps, and then he's back in.
13:58Yeah, Jordan snaps were back to back.
14:00And it was hand off, hand off and then go, go sit back down.
14:03And I believe he went for eight and five on those.
14:05Yep.
14:06And he looked forceful.
14:07He looked good.
14:07He looked good.
14:08He burst and then that was, that was it.
14:11And I know it's not strictly a Kyle Shanahan decision.
14:14Bobby Turner, the running backs coach, is the one who does the substituting.
14:17But I look at this game against Green Bay and I would love to see the two of them on
14:22the field more often.
14:23I'm with you.
14:24I'm totally with you.
