00:00Drake may walking in here right now as we get ready to sit down and talk with him
00:05This is this has been an interesting season so far in general
00:09I think for this team with a lot of questions in various aspects and various things
00:15But one thing that everybody agrees on
00:17including us and national people and everything else is that you Drake may have been a bright spot on this offense and
00:22Someone that if you're a Patriots fan, everybody should be very excited about as Drake may joins us right now
00:27Are you hearing all of the I don't even want to call it criticism because it's not criticism
00:31Are you hearing all this love that you're getting like is this something you're aware of because everybody Gronkowski Mark Sanchez on the broadcast
00:37Everyone who talks about you is just glowing terms these days. Is that that must be nice, right?
00:42Yeah, try to read into much of that
00:43I think you know probably the biggest time I noticed is it you know the fan base on on Sundays in the games
00:47I think they've been great. You know, we had away games like a lot of past fans that showed out
00:50So I think and you know, we try to help them out and put some wins in the win column
00:55I
00:56Need to do a better job of but I think we're in some games and you know
00:59So plays a few plays away from having some more dubs in the win column
01:03But if we make you aware of it if you haven't heard some of it
01:06I know a lot of people will be like, oh my mom sent something or my brother sent something
01:10Although with your brother's it right making fun of you
01:14Does that type of positive reinforcement? Does it drive you to be better? Like how do you how do you take positive reinforcement?
01:21You know, I appreciate it. I think it's uh
01:24Especially some of the you know, the media guys or you said Gronk said something like next time I see Gronk or hopefully meet him
01:30You know sometime just you know, thank him and appreciate it. I think you know more of a
01:34It don't take too high when you know, you feel you're playing well and don't get too low when things aren't going your way
01:39So, you know, it's kind of a tough battle because you know
01:41I do look like I'm you know, making some plays and we're moving the ball offensively
01:44Uh, I think it's turned in the wind. So I think we need to figure that part out
01:47But at the same time I think we got those guys and in that room a lot of different guys making plays and I think we're
01:53Just you know food plays away and it's a bummer really to you know
01:56How the you know, really the end of the game has ended up because I feel like you know
01:59A chance with the ball in my hands. That's what that's what I want
02:02I want the ball to be my hands a chance to win it and just gotta come up on the right side of it
02:06All right. Don't worry. We'll get to the end of the game
02:07But first that Drake May is brought to you by Northeast men's health experts in treating men's sexual health with five New England offices
02:12Or at Northeast men's health comm and by Cardi's furniture and mattresses get next day delivery with removal and disposal at Cardi's furniture and mattresses
02:21All right, you brought it up. So I feel like it's fair game now, of course to talk about that throw at the end of the game
02:26Douglas didn't turn around. I heard you talking about it afterwards what you saw there and
02:31Miscommunication is is how that was sort of classified
02:34You seem to have a pretty good rapport and a pretty good relationship with your wide receivers. They all speak very highly of you
02:42how do you how do you get these kind of miscommunication sort of out of the out of the huddle and and
02:48Execute a little bit better on those type of plays at the end of game
02:50So yeah, I like I said post game just talking through more scenarios throughout the week and you know certain plays and I think it's tough
02:56Situation, you know, we got to feel like you've got to make a big play at the end
02:59So I'm just be on the same page with with our guys and you know
03:03I don't think I think me and popper I think we were seeing the same thing just kind of on different
03:08You know kind of route yardage was kind of you know, what he was thinking and and what I was thinking
03:12So like I said, just talking through more did you guys talk about the play afterwards? Did you sort of get on the yeah?
03:17No doubt. Yeah, I mean pop, you know, we're open books, you know, I don't feel ever talked to pop
03:21But he's bunch of energy and he's always got something to say and no nothing no harm or no
03:26You know bad vibes when either of us, you know, I think he's a great player
03:29I made a lot of great plays and think y'all saw that this is gonna sound probably harsh and maybe a little dictator like but
03:35Do the receivers have to see it the way you see it?
03:38Like is that the solution like everybody needs to see it through your eyes? Ah, I try not to be that way
03:43You know, I think that you know, sometimes as the quarterback, I think that's
03:47Kind of tendency. Hey, you see it, you know the way Drake's seeing it, but I try to you know, see
03:51Hey, they move around, you know this way it's this coverage a certain way
03:54I try to let them kind of play their way into some strengths. I don't think that play was an example of that. I think
04:00Just you know trying to be an open book and hey if they want to this running this route this way versus man coverage versus
04:05Own, I'm all for just you know, getting guys open the way the game started your first couple of drives
04:11You had a couple of plays. We were just talking about that. We're pretty cool to watch on TV
04:15I don't know if they feel the same way when you're out there actually doing them
04:17But the jump pass that sort of sidearm throw you had there and things like that that all seems to come very naturally to you
04:22That's not something that seems like you're going out of your way to try and do for the cameras or anything like that
04:26How did you sort of develop those those types of throws?
04:29we can just playing different sports growing up, you know play baseball and
04:33Played a lot of different sports growing up
04:35So just different arm angles and trying different stuff out and having older brothers that you know
04:40Did some cool things in sports, you know that I saw hey, let me try that or hey
04:44Let me you know playing shortstop, you know flick at a second base for a double play or something like that
04:48So just plenty of sports growing up and just just playing ball out there early on
04:52You were very accurate and it seemed like every throw was kind of right where the receiver needed it
04:57Are you growing in that area because I know that was some people had criticisms about you know short to throw accuracy different things
05:03Even you I think mentioned one of our first interviews like I miss pop over the middle. I was just off on that
05:08has that
05:10Accuracy, do you feel like improved as you played more or was yesterday a good day?
05:13Are there days where it's just there and some days it's not how does that work?
05:16I thought I've been you know, pretty accurate pretty much, you know, my whole career
05:18I think you know, I'm going back to college not you know, I have a short career here
05:24I
05:25Think you're getting you know used to pop over the middle is just something you haven't played with him much
05:28I've made I mean reps with him over the middle and we're in a real game and with live bullets
05:31so if I got a good report those guys and where they're gonna be at and
05:35I think the big thing we talked about the quarterback was ball placement. I think I can lead the yards after catch
05:39So they'll be a showcase that well on Sunday. What thing or what aspect of your game? Do you think has gotten?
05:45Better over these four weeks. And what do you think you still need to work on the most?
05:50Gotten better of I think just taking what defense gives me. I think I always need a home run
05:53I think I'm gonna do a good job of that. We got some plays
05:56Like on Sunday where hey, we're splitting out a bubble
05:58We're splitting out little things a little you know spot route at five yards that are turning the big plays
06:03So it's taking what defense gives me and not kind of trying to you know, hunt up
06:06You know the deep shot or the big play or the scramble play every time and then just handle situations better
06:11I think you know fourth third down we're gonna kick in a field go down in the red zone
06:15they brought cover zero and maybe had pop on a shout to get in score and
06:20Handling kind of the short yardage runs of maybe pump up the guys some more to try to get it first down
06:25We have some big short yardage runs that we didn't capitalize it on so little situational football that I think can help us
06:31Speaking of short yardage runs. We were actually have a discussion before you came in
06:34There's been this talking point like no designed runs and you know
06:37You were coming off a concussion and you've been scrambling a lot doing different things
06:41Do you think there are opportunities for you to have design runs moving forward this season moving forward?
06:46Whenever in the future like I'm fourth and two for example, I like fourth and goal from the two
06:50Um, I do think there's a spot for that
06:52you know, I feel like I'm a you know, big kid big athletic kid that I've you know, I ran for a bunch of yards in
06:58college and
06:59I'm making the plays my feet here in the NFL
07:02So I think there's definitely a time and spot a place for it
07:04But I think what we've been doing and giving the ball to Mondra is not always a bad option
07:09Mondra's a lot better running than I am. All right. Well, you probably heard about this over the course of the week
07:15It was a big story that the team owners had been calling around looking for
07:20assistance, maybe some help on
07:22Bringing you along and sort of your development for maybe outside the organization. Is that something that you took to heart?
07:28Is that something you think is necessary? And how do you feel the team has been?
07:33Sort of developing you so far early on. It's obviously early in your career as you mentioned
07:38But how do you sort of see that going so far and would you welcome outside?
07:42Help. Yeah, I haven't heard really much about that and
07:45Quite honestly, I've even heard of any of it any of that
07:48I think you know the guys in the room and you AVP and TC you're doing, you know
07:53Great job if I can prepare if I complain on time and you're making plays
07:56I think there's a little situational things that just come with you know, getting the experience and being a 22 year old rookie in the NFL
08:02so I think
08:03What we got in that offense and and those players in there that we're making plays and I don't really think
08:09You're not too much to say about that along those lines
08:12One of the things you've been really consistent with is postgame
08:14Somebody will ask you a fourth and to field goal punt whatever a two-point conversion and you have been very supportive of your coaches
08:21If coaches say it we go along with it
08:24Where did that mentality come from you seem like a good soldier
08:26I mean, is that just the way you've always been growing up if coach says that I do it because we've had discussions around here
08:32Even coach Mayo said a lot of modern players are why guys like you can't just tell them what to do
08:37Sometimes they'll ask why and then you explain it. You don't seem like a why guy you seem like a yes coach
08:42I think at this point. Yeah, I think just the way I grew up with my parents and how they kind of
08:47Handled the household and and raised us just being a hey my parents tell us to do it, you know, that's a it's a no
08:54it's a no-brainer, you know what we kind of what they ask of us and
08:57Being humble and saying yes, sir. Yes, ma'am little things like that kind of credit to my parents and being a good soldier or
09:04Kind I have a resource that comes along with being a working quarterback and not having too much
09:08But I think there is times where hey if I want to voice opinion of going for it
09:11I think down the road that I think they would respect that and listen after your guys's last loss
09:15You obviously had the big speech where you address the team and a lot of people had a lot of positive things to say about
09:20That you guys end up winning a game
09:22Is this the type of game that we just saw on Sunday that prompts another speech from you?
09:26Is that something you're going to be doing for the rest of the year?
09:28How's that? How do you how do you sort of square that up as a leader on the team?
09:32Yeah
09:32I don't think you've got to kind of you know
09:34Pick it pick the dates and pick them ahead of time think of it
09:36You know if it's something need to be said and you say it so I don't think it's something where hey
09:40I need to do something next, you know this Wednesday or Thursday
09:43I think it's just something that kind of comes to mind and it's based off how we practice
09:47Not to bring up another painful play
09:48But we should probably ask about the fumble
09:50Looked like you were kind of ready to throw and then kind of brought it back down and then they ran a game up front
09:55They were able to get there
09:56What were you seeing the opportunity to get rid of the ball as opposed to not get rid of it?
10:00Just talk us through what happened there. Yeah, I could think just got to get it out, you know third down and
10:04happens to be incomplete and
10:07It's incomplete we put it away I think can't take a you know
10:11Sacrifice your own territory and give the defense in that spot
10:14So booty had a stop route and he beat the Gotham the release so bad. He was ahead of him
10:18So just got a you thought over his head or give him a chance to think he's still end up beating him
10:23Got the Miami Dolphins coming up here
10:25It's a team that you guys have seen already
10:26Not a game that you played in but after seeing them and sort of seeing what they do from the sideline
10:31Is that is that useful for you? I mean, it's a second time seeing them. It's a division game
10:35Do you take into account things you saw Jacoby doing out there in the first game?
10:39And how do you incorporate that in your game plan?
10:41Yeah
10:41you go back and watch the first game and and see
10:44You know what they did against us and how they try to exploit us defensively and also get a great chance to see how our our
10:49Players played against their players, you know kind of personnel wise, you know
10:53How how they guard, you know guard our receivers or tackled our guys in space
10:57So you see a lot of different things with you know, playing an opponent, you know twice in one year
11:00How are your mom's hands you brought up that that's a throw to low that she could you know, my mom's a good athlete
11:06I'm sure she probably would have caught it. Is she a legit athlete? Yeah, she's a good athlete
11:10So she probably one-handed it
11:11All right
11:12The quarterback question of the week brought to you by Northeast men's healthy experts in treating men's sexual health with five New England offices or at
11:18Northeast men's health comm this one comes to us from Doug in Alston who has Drake who was your favorite quarterback to watch growing up?
11:25Mmm, I grew up in Charlotte and I love the Panthers
11:27Oh, no, Cam Newton was you know, right in my kind of younger age and I was a big fan of Cam Newton
11:33So I probably say Cam and always obviously your respect to the guys who won
11:37So guys like Peyton and Brady kind of those matchups, you know growing up was kind of the heyday of me and you know
11:42elementary school middle school
11:43So my favorite player going to see was Cam and then those guys that won and played in big-time games
11:48Cam is someone you've been compared to by the way
11:50I mean big tall quarterback big arm mobile that type of thing. Did you model your game after him growing up at all?
11:55Ah, that's true. I hope somebody say that, you know, whatever on the football
11:58But I think cam I had some great years in Carolina and I really put the Panthers on the map along those lines
12:04Did you get a chance to cross paths with Matthew Stafford yesterday? He's a guy who's been doing it for a long day
12:08Yeah, yeah, you know big fan of Stafford and obviously hate, you know, how well he threw it against us on Sunday
12:14I mean make some some nice throws. So told him I was a big fan
12:17That's he's gonna grow grew up watching him playing on Thanksgiving
12:20He was one of those guys that was at the forefront. It feels like of the the arm angles and the off-platform
12:25I know a lot of people credit Mahomes with that
12:27But I think Stafford was doing that for a long time. Yeah, I think he's probably doing it for you know
12:30Stafford and doing the no-looks and yeah some of that so
12:34Special talent, you know, it's fun to watch, you know him on the sideline
12:38Sadly, but I think just watching him on Sundays in general is pretty cool
12:40Any of your coaches ever give you a hard time over those?
12:43I know Mahomes is very he said Andy Reid actually pushes him to test stuff try stuff underhand
12:49Whatever behind the back. Have you had any bad experiences with no look or arm angles where any of your coaches were like?
12:55Yeah, don't do that again. Uh
12:57knock on wood
12:58Sorry, I didn't mean to jinx you. Yeah, we'll see
13:01There's some some different stuff in my bag that hasn't been shown yet. Oh, I like the teaser
13:06All right. I like that to our hand did behind the back anything that crazy
13:13Happens if you do throw behind the back touchdown pass, can you say hey that was for you guys until you eat?
13:18Yeah, that's for you. We'd appreciate that. All right, that's Drake May quarterback of the Patriots. Thanks so much for the time
13:23We appreciate it. Yes, sir. Thank you
13:24All right
13:24There goes Drake May who?
13:27According to just about everybody at his best game of the season so far on Sunday in a loss the Rams
13:332822 winners over the Patriots May 30 of 40 for 282 yards two touchdowns a pick and a QB rating of
13:41100.2
