Debrief from Murrayfield after Scotland's 59-21 win over Portugal
Transcript
00:00Hello, it's Graeme Bean here for the Scotsman at Murrayfield where Scotland have just beaten
00:06Portugal 59-21. It was a convincing victory for the home side who outscored their opponents
00:12by 9 tries to 3 in front of over 60,000 supporters. Darcy Graham got one of the tries to go level
00:19with Doohan Van der Merwe at the top of the all-time Scotland try scoring list. They've
00:24now got 29 each. But even that was overshadowed by the debut today of Freddie Douglas who
00:31came off the bench to become Scotland's youngest debutant in over 60 years, just 19 years of
00:37age. He came on for the final 15 minutes replacing Ben Mundcaster and equipped himself well in
00:47a tricky game to come on to but did well for the 15 minutes he was on the field. He's now
00:53a fully-fledged Scotland international before he's even played a competitive match for Edinburgh's
00:57club. It's an incredible story and we spoke to Freddie afterwards and he was absolutely elated
01:02to win his first cap. He had a lot of friends and family in the crowd and they all gave him
01:08a great reception after the game. He wasn't the only debutant. Ben Mundcaster who he replaced
01:14was also making his first start for Scotland as was Alex Samuel, the Glasgow forward. Both
01:21performed well. Samuel very good at the line-out, Mundcaster canning well for Scotland. The stand-out
01:29performers were probably Josh Bayliss and Tom Jordan in a much-changed Scotland team. They
01:36certainly put their hands up for selection for the squad for next weekend's match against
01:39Australia which will be a far tougher test. Scotland made 14 changes in total from the
01:46side that lost to South Africa last weekend. As I say, they scored nine tries. Will Hard
01:52got the ball rolling with the first one. There was also a try for Staffan McDowell who was
01:55captain today. There was a penalty try, then Graham scored, then Jamie Batty. Aaron Reid
02:02got a double, two in two minutes and then Jamie Dolby rounded things off coming off
02:06the bench to score the ninth try. Portugal are good in places. They played a fast and
02:12open game. They scored three tries themselves through Luka Begic, Samuel Marquez and Rafael
02:17Storti. They almost got a fourth at the end but they were held up on the line by the combined
02:25play of Darcy Graham and Luke Crosby. So final score here was Scotland 59, Portugal 21.
