00:00I was told to choose the plane community, the community that I am in, or the world.
00:08If you've ever stumbled across Sarah Joy's TikTok, you might know her as that sweet Amish
00:12girl sharing her simple life.
00:14But as it turns out, there's nothing simple or so Amish about Sarah after all.
00:18I work at a plane store, so of course if you come in with dyed hair, piercings or tattoos,
00:22I'm gonna stare at you.
00:23Sarah Joy quickly became a TikTok sensation by sharing everyday moments from what she
00:28claimed was an Amish lifestyle, homemade bread, horse-drawn buggies, and a wholesome
00:32way of life.
00:33But now, she's caught up in a major controversy, with claims that she's been misleading her
00:37millions of followers.
00:39Someone who claimed to know Sarah Joy growing up called her out for faking it all, saying
00:43Sarah Joy is lying to all of TikTok about being Amish.
00:47She's not.
00:48Our Amish princess with makeup, them with family, those are their parents.
00:53Amish people on TikTok, yes, that's a real thing.
00:55And other critics were quick to point out inconsistencies in Sarah's content.
00:59They claim that Sarah Joy's style and behaviors don't actually align with traditional Amish
01:04culture.
01:05For example, she's using a smartphone, a big no-no for the Amish community.
01:09Sarah Joy's initial response was to deny the claim in a video she posted.
01:12It was brought to my attention that someone is on here that I knew their sibling, I did
01:19not even really know them, who's spreading nasty, hateful rumors about me.
01:24I was told to choose the playing community, the community that I am in, or the world.
01:33Turns out, she might actually be Mennonite, a religious group that shares some beliefs
01:36with the Amish, but is way more lenient about things like technology.
01:39So just because somebody is playing doesn't mean that you're Amish.
01:44But here's where it gets complicated.
01:46Sarah has never explicitly said she's Amish, yet her whole TikTok persona leans into the
01:51vibe of that ultra-traditional lifestyle, leading a lot of fans to feel misled.
01:55Just admit, just tell the people that this was a character, it's okay, just tell them.
02:00So is this all just a big misunderstanding, or was she intentionally playing up her Amish
02:04aesthetic to attract followers?
02:06The line is pretty blurry.
02:08According to some viewers, the issue isn't just about religious authenticity, it's about
02:11trust.
02:12Many feel that Sarah's followers were drawn in by the idea of an authentic look at Amish
02:17life, only to find out that the reality might be something different.
02:20Meanwhile, Sarah Joy had others concerned after posting a cryptic final video.
02:24This is the last TikTok that I'm going to be making while I'm still in the community.
02:30It has been very nice to get to know all of you, and I appreciate the opportunity that
02:37you have given me to talk about the community.
02:41Some were worried for her safety based on her peculiar behavior, and evening called
02:45authorities to do a wellness check.
02:47Others felt it was just another con.
02:48Also thanks to everybody who thought that I was kidnapped and tried to help me.
02:51I really appreciate that I'm not kidnapped, I'm just at my house.
02:54Either way, the lesson here might be simple, don't believe everything you see on TikTok.
02:58But hey, if social media were totally transparent, where would the fun be in that?
