COP29 host Azerbaijan fossil fuel deals bared ahead of climate summit   An official with Azerbaijan's Presidency of next week's United Nations COP29 climate summit appears to offer to facilitate talks about new fossil fuel deals ahead of the conference, according to a video secretly recorded by an advocacy group. In an investigation first reported by the BBC, non-profit group Global Witness, which advocates against corruption, said it had set up a fake company to express interest in investing in Azerbaijan's national oil and gas company SOCAR, and in sponsoring the annual climate summit. In the video, recorded by Global Witness, Elnur Soltanov, CEO of the COP29 talks in Baku aimed at tackling global warming, offers to introduce a representative of the sham oil and gas firm, called EC Capital, to SOCAR. 00:00So, what we found with this investigation was that explicitly through the COP process,

00:18we were able to get access to senior executives at an oil and gas company and actually were

00:23offered new conversations about new investments for fossil fuel deals at COP29.

00:44As I said, we have a lot of pipeline infrastructure.

00:48We have a lot of gas fields that are to be developed.

00:53We have a lot of green projects that SOCAR is very interested in.

00:58There are a lot of joint ventures that could be established, potential joint ventures.

01:03Our SOCAR trading is trading oil and gas all over the world, including in Asia.

01:09So to me, these are the possibilities to explore, but in any case, this is something that you

01:14need to be talking to SOCAR and I would be happy to create a contact between yourself

01:20and them, your team and their team, so that they can start discussions.

01:44contacts between you and themselves.

01:47It has very bright and progressive leadership.

01:52There was leadership change lately in SOCAR's top management and they are working very hard,

02:00very efficient, very clever guys.

02:03And I think they would be happy to explore possibilities of cooperation with you.

02:17It doesn't surprise me that conversations around new energy deals are happening.

02:23It certainly does surprise me that this is the second year in a row where a COP president

02:28has appeared to try and facilitate new deals for fossil fuel projects within and under

02:34the auspices of COP itself, the primary forum for the world coming together to discuss a

02:40very inclined breakdown.
