00:00What are you doing here? Oh, you're an awful friendly right now,
00:04aren't you?
00:04Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the movie breakups
00:09that we're still not over. We're spoiling some major events in these stories,
00:13so a spoiler alert is in effect.
00:16He's looking at you, kid.
00:18Number 10. Adele and Emma, Blue is the Warmest Color
00:22The tumultuous and passionate romance between two young women grounds
00:25this three-hour French film. Adele's entire understanding of her sexuality
00:29is challenged by the relationship. Watching her navigate her new sense
00:33of self is messy, raw, and imperfect. In one of its most intense scenes,
00:38Emma finds out that Adele has slept with a male co-worker.
00:49It starts as an interrogation and ends as an all-out shouting match,
00:53with Emma unwilling to hear her out, throwing her things out of the closet.
01:00Adele is gripped by sheer panic as she realizes that their relationship is over.
01:12Number 9. Elio Perlman and Oliver, Call Me By Your Name
01:20Set against the beautiful Italian countryside in the 1980s, Elio is a professor's son who
01:26falls desperately in love with his father's graduate student assistant, Oliver. Their tender
01:30connection is short-lived. Oliver must go back to America soon, and their entire affair is colored
01:36by that reality. Their last moments together take place at the train station. Elio can only
01:52cling to Oliver before he boards the train and leaves his life forever. There's too much to say
01:57about what they've shared, so they don't say much. They don't even say the word goodbye.
02:02Elio holds his emotions in just long enough to call his mom to come pick him up.
02:18Number 8. Noah Calhoun and Ali Hamilton, The Notebook
02:23Lovers from different worlds is a cliché as old as romance stories themselves. The Notebook
02:37is old-fashioned, but that's kind of the best thing about it. Noah Calhoun and Ali Hamilton
02:42fall in love despite her upper-class upbringing and his low social standing as a carnival worker.
02:48When their romance is challenged by Ali's parents, neither one handles it well.
02:52I didn't spend 17 years of my life raising a daughter and giving her everything so she could
02:57throw it away on a summer romance. She will wind up with her heart broken or pregnant.
03:01Reality creeps in, and Ali impulsively breaks up with Noah.
03:05It's over, okay? It's over! Don't touch me!
03:11Their storybook romance is seemingly shattered right there in the street.
03:14Anyone who knows the story knows it's not the end, but it kind of feels like it.
03:19No, no, just wait a minute. We're not really breaking up, are we? Come on.
03:22This is just a spy we're having, and tomorrow it'll be like it never happened, right?
03:26Number 7. Jerry Maguire and Dorothy Boyd, Jerry Maguire
03:31Is this bothering you?
03:32No, this is, uh, great.
03:36If you think some movie relationships move too fast, Jerry Maguire's whirlwind marriage with
03:41single mother Dorothy Boyd was more a matter of convenience at first. They may have jumped into
03:46it too fast. While Dorothy knows it looks great on the surface, something is missing
03:51from their relationship.
03:52On the surface, everything looks fine. I've got this great guy, and he loves my kid.
04:05And he sure does like me a lot.
04:07Jerry's struggle with intimacy makes her unsure about where she fits in his life.
04:12Dorothy wants to have an honest and open dialogue about whether or not he actually loves her,
04:16before they put more time into a faulty marriage. It's an unsettling and real fear.
04:21And I can't live like that. It's not how I'm built.
04:29This is goodbye, until Jerry says hello.
04:32Just shut up. You had me at hello.
04:37Number 6. Sebastian Valmont and Annette Hargrove, Cruel Intentions
04:42There's something I have to tell you.
04:45Tell me.
04:46This 90s cult classic took the same 18th century novel that inspired Dangerous Liaisons
04:50and modernized it. In other words, they made it younger, sexier, and even more salacious.
04:56There's a lot to recommend about Cruel Intentions. One thing is this devastating breakup scene.
05:02Cold, calculating Lothario, Sebastian Valmont only agreed to romance Annette Hargrove on a
05:07bet with his stepsister. But he made the fatal error of falling for her, to spare her reputation
05:12from his venomous stepsister's wrath. He lies and says he never loved her.
05:17I thought I was in love with you, but it was just a lie.
05:22I wanted it to work, but unfortunately I feel nothing.
05:25Actors Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon were actually in a relationship when they
05:29filmed the breakup, giving a haunting meta-edge to the scene.
05:34Just leave.
05:435. Carol Aired and Therese Belovet
05:49Carol. Set in the 1950s, this moody period romance starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney
05:54Mara is a subtle but profound experience. Therese falls for the older, more experienced,
06:00and unhappily married Carol. But their romantic getaway is interrupted by a private investigator
06:05hired by Carol's husband. Threatened with losing custody of her daughter, Carol disappears,
06:10ceasing all contact with her lover. She only explains herself in a letter
06:14she has a friend pass along to Therese.
06:20Blanchett speaks the contents of the letter in voiceover as Therese finally gets to mourn.
06:24Please don't be angry when I tell you that you seek resolutions and explanations
06:30because you're young. But you will understand this one day.
06:35They are still so deeply in love, but Carol accepts that time and circumstances
06:40are not on their side. Therese has to accept it too.
06:43I do the only thing I can.
06:56I release you.
06:584. Laura Jessen and Alec Harvey Brief Encounter
07:03Two respectable married people meet by chance in a railway station in post-war England.
07:08They meet up several more times, drawn to each other, and eventually fall in love.
07:12It is true for you, isn't it? This overwhelming feeling we have for each other.
07:17It's as true for you as it is for me, isn't it?
07:20Yes, it's true.
07:21However, they know that their marriages mean they can only move in secret,
07:25never even consummating their growing feelings for each other.
07:27I love you with all my heart and soul.
07:30I want to die. If only I could die.
07:34Their last meeting before Alec leaves for South Africa is brutal enough,
07:38before it's interrupted by one of Laura's acquaintances.
07:42We've still got a few minutes.
07:43Laura! What a lovely surprise!
07:46Social convention means they must allow her to intrude,
07:49even though it's probably the last time they'll ever speak.
07:52Laura suffers her despair silently while Alec leaves,
07:55while her friend can only gab on about something unimportant.
07:58Poor, well-meaning, irritating darling mess-e-ter,
08:02crashing into those last few precious minutes we had together.
08:04Number 3. Francesca Johnson and Robert Kincaid,
08:08The Bridges of Madison County.
08:10You'd never think love like this is going to happen to you.
08:15But now that you have it.
08:16While her husband and children are away at a state fair,
08:19a farm wife meets a well-traveled photographer for National Geographic magazine.
08:23The two become passionate lovers, changing each other's lives forever.
08:27Like many great love stories, theirs ends too briefly.
08:30Francesca believes she must honor her duty as a wife and mother,
08:34and cannot leave with Robert on his travels.
08:36Some people search all their life for this and never find it.
08:39Others don't even think it exists.
08:42You're gonna tell me that this is the right thing to do?
08:48Yeah.
08:48Giving it up?
08:49She gets one more chance to find out.
08:52She gets one more chance once her husband returns.
08:55Seeing Robert standing in the rain,
08:57they say a silent, torturous goodbye before he leaves town.
09:12Francesca returns to her life with her husband,
09:15and Robert drives out of her life forever.
09:18Number 2. Jack Twist and Enes Del Mar,
09:21Brokeback Mountain.
09:22In this groundbreaking and critically acclaimed drama,
09:24two cowboys who unexpectedly forge a romance are constantly kept apart.
09:29Whether it's their own marriages, their fears, or the times they live in,
09:32there's so much conspiring against them to actually be together.
09:36This thing grabs hold of us again, in the wrong place, in the wrong time, and we're dead.
09:45But they also agree that it's too painful to be apart.
09:48Sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it.
09:51On their last fishing trip together,
09:53Enes and Jack lay bare their anguish at the situation.
09:56Enes laughs off Jack's suggestion that they actually live together,
10:00leading to an angry and soul-bearing confrontation.
10:02I wish I knew how to quit you.
10:07Why don't you?
10:09They know something needs to change, but all possible avenues seem blocked.
10:19Number 1. Cindy Heller and Dean Pereira, Blue Valentine.
10:34You know, it's not just us. We got a little girl we gotta think about.
10:42I know. I am thinking about her.
10:46Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling star in this gut-wrenching marital drama told
10:50in a non-linear fashion, bouncing back and forth between the start of Cindy
10:54and Dean's relationship and the end of their marriage.
10:56Blue Valentine constantly forces us to see how this love turned poisonous.
11:01When Cindy finally tells Dean their marriage is over, it's an explosive mess.
11:05Tell me what to do. Tell me what to do.
11:09I don't know what to do.
11:10Tell me how I should be.
11:11I don't know.
11:12Just tell me.
11:13Between Dean's pleading and Cindy's tearful confession that she knows
11:17there's nothing they can do.
11:18So out of love with you. I've got nothing left for you. Nothing. Nothing.
11:23Nothing. There is nothing here for you. There is nothing here for you.
11:26I don't love you.
11:27Don't say stuff.
11:28It's as real and vulnerable as movie breakups get.
11:31What movie breakup still stays with you? Let us know in the comments.
11:35Because if you say that, then I won't call you. And I won't be in your life.
11:52I don't love you.
