00:00Hello, Coach.
00:02You said last week on this show that a win would fix everything.
00:06So is everything fixed?
00:07Everything's not fixed.
00:08What I would say is a lot of the things
00:10that were happening over the last few weeks
00:12have been symptoms of losing.
00:14And you have to win one game before you
00:16can start to stack them together.
00:17So that's what I meant.
00:18So symptoms of losing, meaning just everybody is over.
00:21Well, everyone has solutions.
00:23It's not just in the building.
00:24It's outside.
00:25I can't even go to a grocery store without,
00:27well, maybe you should change the time of practice.
00:30My mom calls me to solutions, people in the building.
00:32Everyone has a solution.
00:34What is your mom recommending?
00:36My mom recommends just play better.
00:38Just play, just coach better and play better.
00:41Coach better and play better.
00:42Well, that happened yesterday.
00:44And I think, speaking of noise, a lot of noise
00:47about you calling this football team soft
00:50and then saying they played soft.
00:51But it seems like that you may have known exactly what you
00:54were doing and that these guys responded well to that.
00:58The guys went out there and played well.
01:00I tried to walk it back last week
01:02as far as calling them soft.
01:04We played soft the last two games.
01:05And that's what I meant.
01:06And I would say those guys answered the challenge.
01:08I don't think we have soft guys in the locker room.
01:10That's just the way we played the last two weeks.
01:12And I thought they came out and played well yesterday.
01:14Gerard, I know that some of the guys, especially the wide
01:17receiver group, and we're all like that, guys
01:19who want the football, we're talking
01:22about being more productive, having more opportunity.
01:25It seems like they got some chances yesterday
01:27and still had some drops.
01:29What are some of the issues with maybe the drops
01:31that some of these guys have to focus on a little bit better?
01:34The issue is the drops.
01:35You're exactly right.
01:36Those guys, they got open.
01:38And good receivers, they get open.
01:41They catch the ball.
01:42And if they're really good, they run with it afterwards.
01:44And we had a bunch of drops yesterday.
01:47But those are things that we can correct and look forward
01:50to those guys taking the next step.
01:52But when it comes to correcting that,
01:54is that just reps in practice?
01:56Is it a mental thing with some of these guys?
01:58It seems like some, you brought this up a couple of weeks
02:02ago with us, where it's OK to talk and demand the football,
02:06but then you got to deliver.
02:07It seems like just-
02:09Which I still feel that way.
02:10And a lot of people, well, get on the jugs machines
02:13and do all this and do all that at the same time.
02:15You don't have a 250-pound linebacker running at you
02:18at the same time.
02:19And so some of those drops were across the middle.
02:21We had a couple on the outside.
02:22And it comes down to concentration.
02:24When it comes to going into halftime yesterday,
02:26it seemed like you guys were just
02:27trying to run the clock down.
02:29That's exactly what we were trying to do.
02:31Any time you lose your starting quarterback in the game plan
02:34or revolves around your quarterback
02:36and there's a major shift, we run the ball.
02:40If we pop that run, then we'll get into our two-minute
02:43or no-huddle stuff.
02:44But at the same time, it was an opportunity for us
02:46as a team in all three phases to hit the reset button,
02:50go back, re-energize, make our corrections,
02:52and come out and play.
02:53What was your message in the locker room
02:55at halftime after doing so?
02:56Yeah, the messaging was the same thing I said before the game,
02:5930 minutes before those guys got dressed.
03:01And it's the next man up mentality.
03:03Before the game, we found out that one of our best players
03:06wasn't able to go and dug her.
03:07And I challenged the rest of the guys.
03:09Like, look, it's the next man up.
03:10And it stinks to find out that close to the game.
03:13But it happened.
03:14And the same thing in the game.
03:15When your starting quarterback, who
03:17you expect to go out there and play four quarters, more,
03:19if need be, goes down, it's the next man up mentality.
03:23And I told those guys at halftime,
03:25this is an opportunity for us to go out there and support
03:27Jacoby.
03:27And that's by playing complimentary football.
03:29And I think we did that at times.
03:31Jerron, I thought last week was a massive week for you,
03:35our perspective outside the building.
03:37But the noise, was that a fever pitch
03:38about walking back comments, the locker room, these players?
03:43When has walking back comments ever been a big deal?
03:47For me, it's for me, though.
03:49Situations change.
03:50And I would always say, I always reserve
03:52the right to change my mind, no matter what we're talking about.
03:55Who's starting, who's not starting.
03:56Like, I always reserve that right.
03:58And we talk about transparency, which I've
04:00tried to be with all of you guys.
04:02And to me, transparency is what I want you to see.
04:04I'm not going to say everything that is under the curtain, no.
04:08But at the same time, the relationship with the media,
04:10I think, is important.
04:11So even in saying that, you say it's a fever pitch.
04:14For me, it doesn't matter.
04:16As long as the fam's straight, I'm straight.
04:19This isn't really adversity for me.
04:20I think it's a perspective thing.
04:22And I'm glad to hear you say that the way you said it.
04:24Because I think some people perceive it
04:27to be a lack of experience, or somebody who's new in a job,
04:30I think is where that.
04:31I am new on a job.
04:33And what I will say is, just like I expect from our team
04:35to get better each and every week,
04:37I expect me as a head coach to get better every single week.
04:39And I demand that from our assistant coaches as well.
04:42Like, you guys got to get better every single week.
04:45It doesn't matter who the players are out on the field.
04:47We expect to go out there and win, and play winning football.
04:50Are you also demanding from your assistants
04:53a new touchdown celebration every week?
04:57Is there a name for that?
04:58I'm just happy we're scoring touchdowns
05:00if they are celebrating.
05:01Was that part of the plan?
05:03No.
05:04Honestly, when Kraft released the shoes,
05:08AVP was joking around like the old kid in play.
05:10Like, we're just out there having fun, man.
05:12Look, at the end of the day, winning is fun.
05:14And it's fun winning.
05:16And that's kind of our mindset.
05:19I want you to totally answer that properly.
05:21And Greg's waiting one day for me
05:22to actually do my job well enough to celebrate.
05:24But a part of that huge noise outside the building
05:31was led by the guy you replaced.
05:33And I know you don't want to get into personal stuff,
05:35but is it surprising on any level for you
05:37that a guy you played for, took you at 8 overall,
05:40worked on his staff for years, is so quick to criticize
05:43and sort of knock you when you're down?
05:46Well, I was 10 overall.
05:48Sorry.
05:48Just doing some research.
05:49Top 10.
05:50They traded back from 8 to 10.
05:51No, they didn't trade back from 8 to 10.
05:53They traded back from 7 to 10.
05:55Oh, my bad.
05:55There we go.
05:57You know, look, I learned a lot from Coach.
05:59And I learned a lot on the field, off the field,
06:02all those things.
06:03And in saying that, I had to do what I believe in.
06:06And that's what it comes down to.
06:08Gerard, isn't the most important thing,
06:10and I think for us on the outside,
06:13we don't really know what's being said on the inside.
06:16And I think it's great.
06:18And then we have a problem.
06:20Right.
06:21But a lot of the players, they were saying,
06:23well, this is the message that Gerard was giving us
06:26before he got to the media.
06:28And isn't that the most important thing,
06:29at least it was for me, is that what the players are getting
06:33before the media gets, you know, you're out there
06:36and you're giving your post-game interviews, that kind of thing.
06:39I'm very open with the players.
06:40I'm very transparent.
06:42And you would know this, being a player,
06:44you have so many people around you that will lie.
06:47And they'll tell you it's not your fault.
06:49You know, well, this should have happened.
06:50That should have happened.
06:51And I feel like my job is to tell you the truth.
06:54And I always, I live in truth and I have no reason to lie.
06:58My mom always used to joke around.
06:59Is it worth going to hell over?
07:00I'm like, no, mom, no.
07:02So I try to be very truthful.
07:04And again, like no matter what the noise is outside,
07:07I'm very upfront with our players.
07:09And I think they appreciate that.
07:10I know you've already said to media this morning
07:12that Drake is in concussion protocol.
07:14When he came off the field yesterday,
07:16what was he feeling?
07:17What went into him having to get checked out?
07:20And then I know you've said that during halftime,
07:22he said to you that he felt like he could go back out there.
07:25Yeah, it was a, I mean, look, it was called down from the league
07:28and they, you know, they wanted to do further evaluation.
07:31You know, when I went in there at halftime,
07:32like he wanted to go back out there,
07:34but obviously he didn't pass the test
07:36and I'm not going to get too far into that.
07:38But, you know, at the same time,
07:40he went out there and threw a couple of good balls
07:41after, I guess, I suppose I put him in the protocol.
07:45Yeah.
07:46Let me get quick to the Hellman's mayo question of the week.
07:49You can purchase Hellman's mayonnaise
07:51at your local Walmart or grocery store
07:52to add extra deliciousness and creamy flavor
07:55to your game day dishes this football season.
07:57On that note, on Drake May,
07:59Boomer Esiason was on with us earlier this morning
08:02talking about young quarterbacks who want to run the ball
08:06and don't always take care of themselves.
08:09Is that something that you want to keep reminding Drake May?
08:13This goes back to like, darn if you do, darn if you don't,
08:18you know, and, well, we should put him in the first week
08:20or we should put him in here.
08:21And it's like, you know, you know, at a certain time,
08:23like we're always going to do what's best for the football team.
08:26And look, the quarterback is the most important position on the field.
08:29I mean, however you feel about that,
08:31you know, the quarterback's the most position,
08:33sorry, the most important position on the field.
08:35And he has to he has to protect himself a little better.
08:37You're sitting right next to a darned if you if you don't guy
08:41who thinks your record would be four and four
08:43if you had started Drake May.
08:45And the thing about it, that's fine for him to have that opinion.
08:48Like everyone can have that opinion.
08:49We also had a guy go out there and get hit 50 times in four games
08:53or whatever it is. So that's fine.
08:55You told the CBS broadcast crew that Drake May had a lot to be thankful for,
09:00not just in how Jacoby Reset handles himself and learning,
09:03but that Jacoby Reset took a beating in those first games
09:07that allowed Drake May to come in healthy.
09:09What did you think of Jacoby Reset's comments after the game
09:12where he seemed to take some of the slights personally
09:16from the media and the fans as he went in and won that game in the second half?
09:19He's a competitor.
09:20And I think, you know, if you do listen to that stuff,
09:22you might as well make it a chip on your shoulder
09:24so you can go out there and play hard.
09:26Well, give us a little insight because we hear from him,
09:29but he's very quiet.
09:30And Christian Gonzalez, as far as what we hear from him,
09:34you know, when he comes on this, he comes on this station.
09:37Give us an insight to what he's like as a player and as a person
09:41because he looks like he has the potential to get into an era
09:46of being one of the best corners in National Football League.
09:50What makes him so special?
09:52Like it's been week after week with this guy going against some great players.
09:55Yeah, I would say the corners, the good corners that I've played with,
09:59whether we're talking about Tlaib or maybe not Tlaib,
10:03but Rivas and, you know, Gilmore,
10:06some of these guys, they're quiet off the field,
10:09but once they cross the white lines, it's all business.
10:12It's all being a competitor.
10:14And that's Gonzalez.
10:14Like, I mean, you can sit here and try to get whatever you want out of him
10:18as far as like talking.
10:19But when he crosses the white lines, when he crosses the white lines,
10:22he's a very good player.
10:24Momentum wise, how big was the punt return yesterday?
10:27It was huge.
10:28And that goes back to the complementary football where, you know,
10:32three and out punt return.
10:33And we've been saying it for a while now.
10:35He's almost popped a few this season.
10:37But, you know, good punt return that led to a touchdown.
10:40That is that's what we're trying to do.
10:42Does it feel like a respect thing when you hear the outside noise?
10:45I know that you try to block it out, but nobody had picked you guys to win
10:49in this one.
10:49Then Drake goes down.
10:50And I think people expected the Jets to for you guys to just roll over and die.
10:55Like, does the team talk about that?
10:58Do you guys use do you feel like the guys use that to their advantage
11:01to go out there and prove people wrong?
11:03We use the pressure just to get closer as a unit.
11:05And once again, you know, it takes on the the team, takes on the personality
11:09of the head coach and the quarterback.
11:11And for me, I'm anchored in something that's a lot different
11:13than people agreeing or disagreeing with what I do and what I say.
11:17So I'm always going to do what's best for the Patriot organization.
11:20I think the Kraft family for allowing Elliot and myself to to run this organization.
11:25You surprised by where Aaron Rodgers and the Jets are right now?
11:29I can't. You know, honestly, I don't get into the other teams.
11:34I'm just worried about us.
11:35Well, I shouldn't say worried about us, but my only concern is the Patriots.
11:39Well, there's there's being used to being in the media.
11:43Does it help you with being able to deal with some of the criticism
11:48where people go, oh, he doesn't have experience or which,
11:54you know, you've been coaching in the NFL for eight years.
11:56So I don't really understand what that is.
11:58But there's been in the media help, which you not letting that frustrate you.
12:04You know, I learned very early in my career at Tennessee.
12:07I learned even here in the NFL not to don't Google yourself.
12:12Don't pull. Don't type your name into Twitter.
12:14Words. But I learned that as a player and I was rookie of the year.
12:18And after my rookie year, I was like, you know, everyone around here,
12:22everyone around me, I guess, is fickle for the most part, except for my
12:26my inner circle.
12:27So and once again, like it's the fan, like they pay for those tickets
12:30and they expect to see a team that goes out there and performs well and wins.
12:33I understand that.
12:34I understand you guys have to, you know, sell advertisements.
12:38I understand all that stuff.
12:40And so for me, winning cures all.
12:43And I would say, you know, building a sustainable winning
12:46organization for the future is also top of mind.
12:49And just, you know, you talk about it all the time being transparent.
12:52And that's what I love about getting the opportunity
12:54to have you address all this stuff.
12:56I know you essentially said this week you didn't have an issue with guys
13:00and how they're conducting themselves when they're not on the field.
13:04And, you know, can I can I can I just go back to that?
13:07Like guys being out in London, simply not true.
13:11And so those stories continue to come out where.
13:17It's just not true. Not true.
13:19Yeah. So I'm not sure where it's coming from, but I mean, you got
13:21everyone has their sources again working in the media.
13:24I understand how that works, but it's simply not true.
13:25So nobody missed curfew in London.
13:27I'm saying this. We didn't every I'm saying this.
13:30We did not have people out in London. That's what I'm saying.
13:33I'm not going back to London.
13:34I don't want to go back to London. Is this me going back?
13:38I don't I'm not walking it back.
13:40What I'm saying is Nashville, very fun city.
13:42And I probably put some restrictions in place down there.
13:44It's a fun city.
13:45The guys in the locker room, they do what we need to do to go out there and perform.
13:48And look, we'll win or whatever happens happens.
13:52But at the same time, these guys are professionals and they've acted that way.
13:55How you know, I know you can't be specific, but Drake May, you think he's
14:00we won't see him for a while or what's I'm not sure.
14:03You're not sure. Yeah. OK.
14:04Well, the Internet. Yeah, that's honest.
14:06Yeah, that is honest.
14:07The Internet got me on alcohol prices when at stadiums.
14:09So I don't believe anything I see on the Internet.
14:12OK. Yeah, you do.
14:14You absolutely. Yes, he does.
14:16You're on there right now.
14:17So what are you talking about?
14:19I can't Google it.
14:21Yeah, but you just want Instagram to scroll and headlines on this story.
14:26Come on, man. You don't work.
14:27Wiki's Wikipedia says he was coach of the year at Brock.
14:31I don't believe anything on the Internet.
14:33Now, speaking of coaching, just before you go a little little back and forth
14:36between you and Coach Wiggins.
14:38So I want to it was off air, but I want to ask you,
14:40how would you have defended on that Jaden Daniels Hail Mary?
14:44Well, I mean, first of all, we said you're defensive.
14:47We said we said we said to help Mary's a 5050 ball.
14:51And it's not. And that's what we do.
14:53You know, a 5050 ball, you know, we can say whatever we want to.
14:56It comes down to execution.
14:57Whether you want to rush it or you want to cover, it comes down to execution.
15:00And you can't have a free guy behind everyone else with nobody boxing them out.
15:05Yeah. What about other guys like taunting the opposing fans?
15:08Is that good while the play is going?
15:10Yeah, well, if you're going to do that, you better go out there and make a play.
15:13Again, going back to how
15:15you could talk all the noise you want to, but you better back it up.
15:18You were that guy at the basketball court, right?
15:20West Bend. Oh, 100 percent.
15:22I never get it. Never get it.
15:23If you're up by 40, they put me in.
15:25All right, Coach Mayo. Great to see you.
15:27Great job. Great win.
15:28Not for sure. All right.
15:29And we'll talk to you again next week.
